- Nikonian, on 08/17/2008, -3/+585That desk is going to be outdated in 3 months..
- Slovenian6474, on 10/10/2007, -4/+512He can now claim he owns a 500(ish) core desktop.
- LowROI, on 10/10/2007, -15/+218Its not so much "made from CPUs" as it is made from wood, and covered with CPUs, which is then covered in glass. Still fairly original though.
- TKn00b, on 10/10/2007, -2/+125I wanna hear more about the super computer that they were scrapped from.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+61So tell me what creative endeavours you have pursed today? Scratching your balls does not count.
- RATM4EVER, on 10/10/2007, -3/+59Poor Computer.........Thats like filling your matress with other peoples torn limbs.
- IMADV8, on 10/10/2007, -1/+49Just imagine how many emails he's getting now begging for the leftover CPUs.
- collinong, on 10/10/2007, -0/+40So Itaniums finally support the desktop. It's about time they got out of the server room.
- raptordrew, on 10/10/2007, -4/+44*woosh*
- fotbr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+34Nice. Much better than the "cover the coffee table in bottle caps" thats common today.
- pagemap, on 10/10/2007, -4/+36You're lame
- ChildeRoland420, on 10/10/2007, -1/+29Gluing them to carpet?
- rudy23, on 10/10/2007, -0/+28its a fine tradeoff. A desk just made with CPU's would have been just a display item and couldnt eb used. Now this that he made can not only be used but is also super cool.
Point to be noted : never trust Digg titles. - Smills, on 10/10/2007, -1/+29Anyone want to one-up him and make a desk out of QX6850s? You get free bragging rights!
- TiMMY8765, on 10/10/2007, -0/+24yeah, for desks
- Markie1006, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20I'm sorry - due to export restrictions you are not allowed to see those CPU's.
- RansomDenton, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21Nice work, nice workmanship and great idea.
- Slovenian6474, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21Creativity. He now has a custom desk to be proud of.
- Gugel, on 10/10/2007, -8/+25There's more silicon in that there table than a pair of fake boobs.
- duggtodeath, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18I thought it said "Several Hundred Years Old CPUs" :)
- sputza, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17***** awesome. Its a very attractive desk. I would love to do the same one day.
- bobartig, on 10/10/2007, -6/+21At first I thought "What a waste of perfectly good computer hardware! They could donate that stuff to other CS departments or non-profits etc.etc."
Then I read that they were Itaniums, and realized that nobody else can use the damned things. Might as well convert them into geek furniture. - tuxidomasx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14he could make a coaster or something
- matthewf01, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13http://www.criminology.fsu.edu/book/abacus.gif
- mr2master, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Wouldn't it be more like filling your matress with other peoples brains?
- bobartig, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12There aren't a lot of places selling them any more, according to a couple quick googles. Looks like they sell for between $1100-$1500, but my guess is that nobody uses them any more, and so noone really buys them. From another post on his blog:
For the record:
* there are 434 Madison 9M chips on the desk.
* list price for the lot in 2006 was over US$800,000.
* the chips and glass plate have made my desk about 50kg heavier.
* my desk now contains about 2.8 TFLOPs of computing power. That's about the same as 900 3.2GHz P4s. - gotamd, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Considering that fake boobs use silicone (note the 'e') or saline I would hope so.
- GeekyGerge, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Well Done
- arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11We don't "mod" here, we digg and bury.
You must be a new convert from /. - d3k4y, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Sure. It's a website where people post ads. Some of those are personals, some for events. Some of those ads are even for goods and services, like drugs and sex for example. It's free to post and there are no ads. Skiing means coke, 420 or anything like that means weed, and roses is money to pay hookers. Girl$ with the dollar sign are the hookers themselves. Anything dating related with a dollar sign in the spelling is most likely a prostitution service. You can find heroin, but not very often. I've seen it referred to as china or chyna. Good luck and thanks for your interest!
- martyFREEDOM, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I think the end result was definitely worth the work and effort involved, even if it did seem extremely daunting at first.
- sam991, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10But... that means it'll be a cutting edge desk for 3 months!
- Petrie, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Yes
- judbeasley, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Uhm, try looking at the laptops desktop.
- scabbers, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13Why do I just know those were taxpayer's CPUs that were going to be just tossed away? "Company" my ass.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10I love it! That is a cool desk, and I want it badly. Now to plot my theft....
- arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Yes, stupid american measurements.
Damnit I wish we'd move to the metric system. - geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Imagine the Beowulf cluster they came from.
- Otto, on 10/10/2007, -5/+13While it's hosted on blogspot with the images on flickr, it's really slow to load for some reason..
So, here's a mirror:
http://dotcache.com/http://matttovey.blogspot.com/2007/08/in-march-2007-project-to-upgrade-one-of.html - eatmorgnome, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8As long as you don't use women with sharp knees, that works surprising well.
- rudy23, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9if you are thinking a Desk built just outta CPU's is gonna hold itself up and is gonna be even remotely useful then you are a certified dumbass. What this guy did was creative and supercool. but to each his own.
- MrSketch, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7"Point to be noted : never trust Digg titles."
You've just shattered my innocence. - rodon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I wonder what the lead content of that desk is. Looks neat though.
- gotamd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Too bad CPU's don't weigh very many pounds...
- chubbymidget, on 10/10/2007, -5/+11Imagine a beowulf cluster of those desks....
Sorry wrong site, but for some reason that comment came to mind. - RansomDenton, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Or how about make one out of burned out 360 boards! Just had to sorry...
- merreborn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Meh, they'd probably make perfectly usable linux boxes. Also, there's a decent amount of precious metals in those things. Pound for pound, there's far more gold in CPUs than there is in gold ore.
- MattTovey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Yeah, that photo was taken before the edging went on - try one of the finished photos.
Still, the uprights and the drawer are now looking shoddy next to the rest of it, so EXreation is kinda right - it's not worthy. :) - TheHappyRobot, on 10/10/2007, -6/+11Dugg down, inaccurate: Diggers don't have girlfriends.
