- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+118600 GTS XXX!
NOW RENDER YOUR PORN IN HIGH-DEF! - PhoenixAvatar2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11RTFA. These cards aren't meant to be better than the 8800s, they're meant to be budget cards just like the 7300s and 7600s.
- Dayyve, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12STALKER is great, once you get past the bugs. I hated it for the first hour and was right about to give up when the game turned to AWESOME. Try it again, trust me. Just stick with it and the environments will suck you in, you get much better guns/armor so you don't die in two seconds.
- spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13The 8800 GTS 320mb is only a little more expensive, and far, far out-performs the 8600.

If you're more concerned with budget save yourself the extra money and get a x1950 pro. If you want easily the best price/performance compromise out there get an 8800 GTS 320mb.
I just don't see a place in the market for the 8600 - gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I wouldn't really say that nVidia's DX10 drivers are that great with Vista. In fact, they're pretty shoddy at the moment.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Yeah. The 8600 is a little odd. Its crap compared to the 8800 cards but could be ideal for someone wanting to build an HTPC and want the additional video filtering and acceleration it has that the 8800s don't.
And ts8, the article also states that the 128bitness is largely offset by the rather high RAM clock speed. Try reading the whole thing before making yourself look like a git! - daphatgrant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Hmmm, time to upgrade?
- Ub3rn00b, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm not sure what the purpose of this card is. I mean it clearly doesn't perform nearly as well as alot of the dx9 cards already out around that price range. It might be a bit better than some. And for 20 to 30 dollars more you could get alot better card, albeit a slightly older one. When the 8800GTSs are going for 250 bux, people will be hard pressed to sell this 8600 card for more than 150 bux. It supports DX10 supposedly, but lacks the hardware to be able to display dx10 content at a playable rate. Very pretty game at 5 fps or slightly less pretty game at 60 fps for 20 dollar more? Not a difficult decision if you ask me.
While this might be a good desktop card for an average user, any hardcore gamer will not want to waste their money on any of the 8600 series. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Faster != better when you pit Nvidia against ATi. Nvidia has the upper hand with great drivers for Windows or Linux. ATi's drivers are poor on Windows and even worse on Linux. It's a shame they don't make good drivers, and never have, because they make great hardware. Problem is, you can make the best hardware the world has ever imagined and it's worthless without the software that drives it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Wow, everyone was crapping on this card before it came out. Looks like it's performing very well.
- PATSCRU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3where the hell in ATI's DX10??? R600 has been delaaayed, but i'm really looking forward to it.
- falloutsyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@foolfromhell, no it isn't a problem, these cards are running at a lower spec. Buy an after market cooler brah.
- po43292, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's gonna have problems with DX10 porn. :)
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -1/+4You're just dyslexic.
- turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2max load.
- BabyWookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2STALKER is the most unconventional and immersive FPS I've played since Deus Ex. I really hate that I am getting close to the end of it right now. I want it to go on. The Zone is a pretty amazing place to explore. The atmosphere is incredible. I'm not running into too many bugs either.
- satori3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can someone explain to me what the point of "putting it to the test playing real games and the newest STALKER."? Stalker is a DX9 game and while it's a great game it's buggy as hell. It should be tested using Supreme Commander. I'm shaking my head....
- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How come all these reviews from [H] sound like they were written by 12 year olds? It's flat, uninteresting, repetitive (yes, we understand your point - pipelines on the new nVidia cards doesn't mean anything!) and you don't have to tell us fifty times that this is a "cheap" $250 card! Page 1 told us that.
It would be one thing if it were like early Tom's Hardware, when it was just some guys going out and buying hardware. - LoganT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think some of you are failing to realize that the "X1900GT" doesn't have DirectX10. Which is a major selling point for this card.
- MattFaber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1While were at it lets wait for the 9900GS because we know that will be faster. Or better yet, lets wait until the next generation after that just to be safe.
- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How major, really? Since Vista isn't selling all that well, and it will be years before it's on most home PC's via pre-installation, I don't see more then a few DX10 titles hit the shelves anytime soon. It's a fact that only the most powerful video cards can support all the great snappy DX9 features at reasonable frame rates as it is - just by supporting a few new DX10 features doesn't automatically make them process anything quicker.
By the time DX10 is a requirement for games and/or is even available on most games, there will be plenty of new cards from ATI and nVidia that will get the job done then, and these cards probably won't be able to play them with all the new whiz-bang DX10 stuff anyways. They'll be too slow. - BabyWookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hah. These cards can't even run STALKER with Full Dynamic Lighting at a decent frame rate? He had to run it at 1024x768 with Object Dynamic Lighting. That's surprising and sucky.
- MattFaber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Since we are being literal, I think you are literally stupid. You can't compare used prices with new prices.
The X1900GT costs 171 shipped at newegg. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I read that as "GeForce 6800 GT", how out of date am I with the latest offerings?
- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Indeed, I didn't see your post before I posted a similar one: just because these cards support some new instructions for DX10 doesn't mean they'll be able to actually play DX10 titles at any acceptable speed. Most cards just barely squeak out a playable frame rate when a lot of DX9 stuff is being utilized. And besides, with DX10 being vista only, and with Vista not selling well, we'll likely not see any DX10 only titles anytime soon - and if we do, you better believe Microsoft subsidized the development cost.
These aren't cheap anyways - $250 for a video card isn't cheap. $100 is cheap for a video card these days. If you're looking to spend a few hundred on one you're always better off getting one that will last a few years. These cards will be fast enough to last you a year with the latest games, but if you spend another $100 or so, you'll get one that will last you for three.
I am still using a BFG 6800 GT (which, BTW - BFG rules. Since they have a lifetime warranty on their parts, you can get your card replaced so easy, no receipts, no hassle. I got mine replaced when it broke and got the new one in 2 days.) and I got it when it was brand new and quite expensive. But, I've saved money because the card was top end when I got it and I've been able to use it this long. - Bytor, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Unless of course your read reviews elsewhere that have the X1950 pro which is about $50 bucks cheaper actually beating the top version on more than half the tests.

"The 256MB version of the Radeon X1950 Pro is faster in most games, and by a pretty good margin, too." - truck87bp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Considering the fact that this quality is with XP Pro and not Vista, I'm impressed.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4They reviewed the newest (and buggiest) game...
- falloutsyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4@ ts8lemonade,
RTFA, these cards are right on par with the X1950 or better, DX10 compatible, and are probably cheaper. It's just like all the P4 fan boys back in the day saying AMD sucked because they weren't at "3.xx Ghz". Core 2 maybe at the same Ghz as the new AMD chips, but its transistor count is through the roof. RTFA . . . - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Ewww!
- Racerx52, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2One word.
SWEET! - Racerx52, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1What your saying doesn't make sense.
The 8900gs(Or whatever they'll call it), will be better than the current 8800Gtx.
Like comparing a 7800gt, VS 7900gs. Not a big difference, but the 7900gs is the faster card. - Lane, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1these cards seem really overpriced honestly, you can get an X1900GT off ebay for literally around $110. the cards arent performing nearly as well as id hope. unless you need DX10 for some reason this is a rip off.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I forgot to add.
Is it a problem that my 8800GTX is 61 Degrees Celsius idle while the 8600 GTS XXX is only 55 degrees max load? - jman8888, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2wait for the 8900GS
Same specs as a 8800GTS but less mem but higer clock and lower price.
google it. im waiting - ts8lemonade, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1Wtf, on the comparison chart it shows they're all 128bit memory interface...wtf is that *****. 128 blows.
- quomen, on 10/12/2007, -17/+3I really don't like the game stalker..
I played it and uninstalled it within a few days.
It was buried in my closet as lame.
