- chris4404, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21I dugg him down for the excessive ass kissing, plus I disagree with this assessment of [H].
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15What a strange amount of RAM.
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I can understand 768MB = 256+256+256.
320MB = 128+128+64?
Anyone know what the memory architecture actually is? One set per GPU and one shared? Or texture+shadow+geometry? - AceGoober, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Excellent article. The price does make it tempting to pick-up, but until the driver situation is worked-out I can't justify the expense.
- EXreaction, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Ya, for some stupid reason HardOCP does not like doing those anymore.
Once they stopped comparing identical settings in their reviews I stopped reading them. - Ahnteis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Where can I find any info on the 8600? I'm looking for one myself in the near future, but haven't seen any info.
- kamikazecow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8If anyone is thinking about getting this, be advised that nvidia's driver support (XP, and Vista) for the 8800 is still in very early beta stages (One big example is that for some reason, 2/3's of the memory is running at half of the normal speeds). Make sure to check around to make sure the games you like to play are supported by it.
- pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6For high-res gaming, and usage of anti-aliasing, you're better off with the 640MB GTS or, better yet, the GTX ... granted, not everyone has money for the GTX, which is why I'm planning on waiting for the 8600 Ultra in March. It's only gonna be $180.
- Rickler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The power supply myth: You need 650+ watt PSU to run 8800GTX in SLI.
My 380watt SeaSonic PSU handles a 8800GTX just fine. I'm sure I wouldn't need any more then a 450watt PSU to run in SLI. - WDot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6A quick look on newegg shows that several brands have put out cards for between 299-339 (For those that skipped TFA and went straight to the credit card.) Finally, a card low enough-priced that you don't have to choose between the card or an Xbox 360 (or PS3). Still, when are we going to get to the 8600 GT's? I'd like my video card to be a card, not a box that houses a giant fan. =P
- drpcken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6my 8800 GTX has 768 megs of ram. I thought it was odd too
- sleepyness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4pcgeek101, at high res (1920x1200+), a 8600Ultra isn't gonna be good enough. The 320mb 8800GTS barely keeps up...which is why I ordered a 8800GTS 640mb today!
- Bega, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5actually I think HardOCP has some of the best reviews, They playtest it and the results show what a real world gaming experience is like. I've seen other review sites state that bf2142 gives 60+ fps on an athlon 64 4000, 2 gb ram, and a 6800gt at 1600x1200. HardOCP goes with the graphical analysis so you know when there are frame drops, how much, and the different settngs are mainly to show you what runs best on what. I think this web site that helps consumers decide what's worth buying.
- Stevethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Not for XP, my 8800GTX runs great in my computer, I've heard that there are some problems with some games but they are not more that 2 or 3 specific games that they do (Splinter Cell -I think- is the only prominent). As for the Vista drivers, you are right they are a total disaster, however if someone plans to stay in XP for the time being these cards are a good purchase for their money.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I believe its 64 megabyte chips x some integer...
my GTS is 64mb x 10 = 640.
this card is probably 64mb x 5 = 320 - ImTheDoctor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5We aren't claiming to use the scientific method. Ours is an evaluation of real-world gameplay, go in, play the game, figure out what levels we can play at, and compare that to other cards. That's exactly what gamers do when they get new video cards.
- ikillpeoplexx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4great... but why not show us the comparison with the same settings? i'd like to see the actual performance hit from the memory drop with a percentage.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have one 8800GTX w/ a 610 PSU.
Will I be okay in getting another?
Was hoping to when prices drop.
C2D + DDR2 800 RAM - DocSquidly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What I interested in is if this card will decrease the demand for the 640 MB GeForce 8800 GTS, and result in a drop in its price.
Theoretically, it should, that is if the video card manufactures start to notice an increase in their inventories of the 8800 GTS 640 MB cards. - ImTheDoctor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In Need for Speed Carbon and World of Warcraft the settings are exactly the same.
- jman8888, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pretty Sure the 8600 UL Is for me
Mayby the 8800 GTS

Also.. Affordable Dual DX10 SLI.. Yum - DigDugDigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Everything in Vista should work.... eventually. At least your videocard works... once my card goes in no video comes out... out of card or onboard video. So onboard for me.
- Jellars, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Tom's hardware has benchmarks up with the same settings, and alot more cards...

http://tophomemortgageloan.com - kronix2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It isn't really worth buying an 8600 series card if you want to play DX10 games at a reasonable level. History shows us that only the top-end of new-generation DX cards age well. All the value-oriented DX7, DX8 and DX9 cards supported the new version of DirectX but didn't have enough horsepower to deliver an acceptable frame rate.
£200 for an 8800GTS OC 320mb is great value, especially when you consider that X1950XT-X 512mb cards are retailing for more. - Lyianis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They compare each cards Min, AVG and Top FPS at the highest setting they can smoothly run the game. I fail to see how that is a bad thing.
instead of looking at a Toms review and seeing "okay the 640 ran 3 fps higher than the 320" I can look at [H]'s review and go "okay the 640 had more stable FPS at 1600x1200 and 4xAA, and the 320 had the same avg fps but only ran at 2xAA. Oh and the 1950XTX did 6FPS less at a only 1200x1024 and no AA"
It gives context to what the numbers actually mean. - kronix2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It depends on how many amps the +12V rails deliver. For SLI you're looking for at least two +12V rails which can handle >18A each and a 500W PSU at the least. Most people who run an SLI or CrossFire configuration will most likely be running several hard drives and may be overclocking their rig. That's why a large PSU is recommended for SLI and CF.
A quality 750W PSU can deliver the same power as a quality 500W PSU, but generate less heat and noise, and place less stress on the components. And with a 750W PSU, you're extremely unlikely to hit the ceiling. Most reviews of 700W+ PSUs haven't been able to max them out because the headroom is so large.
@foolfromhell: What's the make/model of your PSU? A 610W PSU usually has multiple +12V rails with ~18A per rail, unless it's a cheap generic model. It should be enough if it's a reputable make. - pillfred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1By barley you must mean at highest settings. At a pretty good resolution imo. I myself would welcome the improvement over my 9600xt. Come spend some time in my world then tell me what barely keeps up.
- nazsco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ok! now just some models until we have a BFG9000 right? *then* i will be getting one. oh yess.
- aoshi11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0can any body give me video card? IM a gamer, but i cant really buy those great video cards.. Maybe anybody there has a spare video card. I could really appreciate it... Thank you.. My email is "aoshi_cruk11@yahoo.com"
- explodebear, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Cheapest ive seen the 8800GTS 320MB is at compusa right now($280), though its PNY http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?&ref=cj&pfp=cj&product_code=344838
- MotionAesthetic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0XP - Well, if it's only using 2/3rds of the memory I can't imagine how good it performs at 100%. I think all the driver complaints are about Vista.
I'm using the Sparkle GTS card... didn't have a clue what the difference was. - Nysul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Will this card actually work in vista? My 7900gt scrambles the screen when doing anti aliasing. I'm almost ready to pick up an ATI card.
- JayRod, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Even though it has half the memory as the high end model you still need that beefy power supply. I bought a PC Power & Cooling power supply a year ago and I thought 510 Watts (Turbo-Cool 510 SLI model) was gonna be enough for years to come. I guess that 1kW power supply they have is not overkill after all.
- jman8888, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Really. They should just bump them all in Ram because it makes no sense.
Like 512GTS/1024GTX/2GBHighend

Legit Reviews tests with normal clocks along side the overclocked samples. - bradsh, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2This site has the worst reviews ever. They change the settings between all the cards, so you cant accurately compare framerates. No sense of scientific method at all
- TheGhengisKhan, on 10/12/2007, -29/+18As always, a very well written, well thought through and researched article from the people at [H]!
I was considering buying one of these, but I think I'll wait for more mature drivers & some software that will actually use DX10 now. - jimmiss, on 10/12/2007, -19/+4Why the negative ratings on this guy?
