- Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it would be cool if they had 100 or so in that big room. Imaging a snowstorm of bellowing helium bloons flocking around you!
- revka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1>Am I the only person that gets reminded of "Rover" from The Prisoner when you look at those things??
no - jaxun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0AH, my vision of a zeppelin-powered future is coming to pass!

I envisioned larger craft, but these will do nicely. I shall equip mine with chimpanzees as backup pilots. Hilarity shall ensue! - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can just imagining these things becoming self-aware and suddenly blotting out the sky with white mylar. A dystopia if there ever was one
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Am I the only one that finds these things kinda creepy? I don't want to be chased by packs of these things wanting me to feed them."
Ahahaha, Creepy indeed.. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmmm, these things look like big Jellyfishes ;)
- SefGray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can see these features being builted into the Nintendo DS.
- Bullsnot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Reminds me of this story from 2 days ago. Nothing fromt page worthy, but a good funny read.
http://sundaughter.livejournal.com/11034.html#cutid1 - Bullsnot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg for being an interesting project, but zero points for scientific purpose. I think this would be a great toy for the kids to play with, next step up from the furbies that recognize each other and make different sounds when they come close to each other. As far as education, I don't find anything useful was gained from this project and if I was one of the sponsors I would be a bit disappointed. Their conclusion:
They are the new things | Alive with a self and collective awareness |
BS.. Not any more then my TVs are alive in their need and collective awareness of the remotes. - lastcavalier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not from the picture, but did the description make anyone else think of Michael Crichton's "Prey"?
- oldcyborg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Outstanding Cool~~! I digg it. I can't see far enough to get an idea of what all they represent, but it is clearly, MANY things. I expect to hear more about this. Talk about a people pleaser. All my sci fi books try to get that kind of feeling, but it is pretty hard to do. hehehe
Cyborg
yeah - jaxun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Anti-digg for the submitter, routing through a site I can't get to from work. So for those of us foiled by websense:
http://people.artcenter.edu/~berk/alavs/ - kevinrose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0haha true, but cool nonetheless
- mogebier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Am I the only person that gets reminded of "Rover" from The Prisoner when you look at those things??
- jaybones1515, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They need to strap some Wi-fi onto those things and bring down the cell phone companies. 80 dollars a month for EV-DO...are you kidding me?!?
- multifaceted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That is so ***** creepy.
I guess now would be a good time to take up darts, self defense against annoying blimps.
Personaly I'd rather have a dog, then a nudged by a ballon.
But dug none the less. - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Am I the only one that finds these things kinda creepy? I don't want to be chased by packs of these things wanting me to feed them.
Although, it's an interesting example of human-AI interaction - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So when will the gov't begin using these to spy on us?
- caleberx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am a programmer and in my opinion these are VERY complex machines. These are not just blimps . They have miniature computers and receive information most likely from a master computer with the main program on it. I would say 1000 to 2000 lines of code would be needed per blimp and another 1000 for the plant and another 1000 for the master program. They are kind of scary looking but I think they are absolutely awesome.
- WrecksTXP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whoa, They're like virtual, non sea whales. Cool
- akimbo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0we now need to add this tech to
FLOCKING TRAFFIC CONES! - McAutry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is nothing compared to the new air ships Lockheed is working on, how about transporting an entire battalion of troops with humvees and all!!
- pvadbx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting reactions.... This project was done by my students in a class called The New Ecology of Things where we looked at the future when nearly every object & space has some processing power and is communicating with everything else. A few notes:
* Each blimp has a small microcontroller with wireless capabilities using a device called a Sun Spot, made by Sun Microsystems Labs. They run a Java application and (other than for testing purposes) operate autonomously -- i.e. no master computer directing them. This was one of the positive outcomes, to see what could be done in a wireless networked environment with autonomous objects. For more info on the Sun Spots, see this PDF:
http://research.sun.com/spotlight/SunSPOTSJune30.pdf
* If you don't have people other than the military experimenting with autonomous devices, how will we come up with interesting things to do with this technology? It IS coming, and this class was about having designers (not engineers) take a look into the future and see what could be done in a positive mode. For more info on the class, see this page:

Cheers, .phil - AToMusK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0THEY CAN PUT THIS ON ROBOTS TO SCOUT OUT PLACES, BUT THEN AGAIN, THEY MIGHT REBEL
- martyuiop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0OR BREAK THEIR CAPS LOCK KEY
- Barnstormer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0And in 2015 they're gonna find Sarah Connor ...and kill her.
- AToMusK, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0OR MAKE THE BLIMP LOOK LIKE PIKACHU
