- lukas88, on 12/28/2007, -2/+71Lets call it what it is: a touch screen shaped like a keyboard. Cool and all, but not super innovative.
- DropTheOxygen, on 12/28/2007, -2/+48So, if its one big touch screen, how do you know where your fingers are when you're not staring at the keyboard?
You have to look down to line your fingers up at the right place, then start typing?
Guess its just not my cup of tea - Tamant, on 12/28/2007, -1/+41Do we have to wait another 5 years for this? Then realize it's gonna cost 2000 bones?
- Norante, on 12/28/2007, -1/+32I see it more as an over sized touch screen panel than a keyboard. Lack of tactile feedback would make it quite hard to use as a day to day keyboard, would it not?
- sandeepg, on 12/28/2007, -2/+29You can display 2 girls kissing on it?
I'd buy it. - Otto, on 12/28/2007, -2/+25I've given up on Lebedev and his designs. They look nice, but he sucks as a businessman. Three years to make a freakin' keyboard and then it costs $1500? Screw that.
- Amplix, on 12/28/2007, -1/+20Yeah, also I don't think I can do without the feedback from regular keyboard keys... So this thing gets a big "meh" from me

As usual Engadget add advertisements instead of value. - Xanium4332, on 12/28/2007, -0/+17Do you not remember all the complaints about the iphone's keyboard...
- ChileanGoD, on 12/28/2007, -0/+16you can but them at BEST BUT.
- inactive, on 12/28/2007, -0/+16It's cute. It can be done. Not innovative but gorgeous as hell. I like the tactile response of keys, though, so not for me.

- weezcnr, on 12/28/2007, -1/+12Ah I thought that might be TATU however you should probably digg me down for knowing that.
- ers35, on 12/28/2007, -1/+12Dvorak?
- prisoner24601, on 12/28/2007, -0/+11Could be something like this: Take your hand and touch it with your five fingertips without looking. Assume the unit calibrates based on this initial five-finger touch the correct "center" of the keyboard.
Imagine that your entire desk surface was like this. You could touch it all day long, slide papers around on it, put a book down on it, etc. and none of those actions would trigger the keyboard. But as soon as it sensed a five-point simultaneous touch in the layout of your (unique and learned) fingertip layout, the "keypad" would appear directly under your hand, exactly located (and oriented) in the correct place. You'd never have to look, you'd just tap (or maybe double-tap?) with five fingers to turn it on (and maybe get an audible beep to confirm or an on-screen system-tray notice), then with muscle-memory you could touch-type whatever you wanted to. It would turn off after x seconds of non-use. - aqzman, on 12/28/2007, -0/+10Looks great and all, but I think I would miss the actual feel of the keys clicking as I typed.
Also, anyone else notice this picture? http://www.artlebedev.com/everything/optimus-tactu ... Ah, Russian lesbians! - inactive, on 12/28/2007, -0/+9"" However, didn't see something like this back in the movie, "2001 A Space Odyssey"? ""
And we all know what happens in that movie!!! - Raian, on 12/28/2007, -0/+8I hear they have an excellent import/export function.
- SIRBERUS, on 12/28/2007, -0/+8As a first-hand-user of one of those "Laser Keyboards" that makes "any surface a keyboard"... you learn to appreciate the small springs in a normal keyboard after you have been tapping your fingers against a hard surface all day.
Seriously, this keyboard (unless made out of some fancy shock-absorbing material) will be a pain (literally). - eclectro, on 12/28/2007, -1/+9Even mentioning 'cup' and 'girls' together gets you modded down.
- DarkMeld, on 12/28/2007, -0/+7Yea, no tactile feedback is what brings the iphone down compared to regular keyboards like the blackberry
- chedabob, on 12/28/2007, -0/+7Synaptic did some research into tactile feedback, and found that most users found that just vibrating the touch screen was a big boost to the intuitiveness of the system.
- terracottapai, on 12/28/2007, -4/+11This is totally different.
I'm not using the iPhone to type 10,000 characters a day.
Stupid argument. - Sinestro, on 12/28/2007, -0/+7In Star Trek, the LCARS touchscreen systems were supposed to provide tactile feedback by micro forcefields(think holodeck). So when you select a function, say Navigation, and the display changes, you can feel where the keys and menus are on the screen. I imagine that if you close your eyes it would feel just like a keyboard).
- Feanor, on 12/28/2007, -0/+6While we're at it we should switch to the Metric System.
- jhuebel, on 12/28/2007, -0/+5Cheaper? Doubtful. You'll be charged a premium just for how "high tech" they think it is... Which it isn't.
- inactive, on 12/28/2007, -2/+6Very accurate description.
- jcc6655, on 12/28/2007, -1/+5you can condition your hands for "virtual keys" when i was in high school & worked at in n out burger i had all the screen locations of the "buttons" memorized & i could take orders as fast as i can type.
- yagran, on 12/28/2007, -1/+5file not found NICE ONE
- Dtopler, on 12/28/2007, -0/+4The thought of using a bigger iPhone keyboard for daily computer use is not exciting. Texting on the iPhone, even after four months of owning it, it still not as easy as I'd like it to be.
- dasutin, on 12/28/2007, -0/+4Optimus Tactus coming Q4 2011, if there are no production problems...
- robbh66, on 12/28/2007, -0/+4Here's a hint: it's like using the iphone all day.
- j3one, on 12/28/2007, -0/+4Unless you use "quotes".
- inactive, on 12/28/2007, -0/+3This is the most succinct video ever made about the desk:
http://sarcasticgamer.com/wp/index.php/2007/06/ms- ... - Ninjab3ar, on 12/28/2007, -2/+5I agree with you. I personally like the feel of keys on a keyboard than fake keys on a touchscreen. And although watching movies on it might be cool, whats the point of that, really? I'm already looking at the monitor of my computer. Why look down at the keyboard.
However, there are so many advantages that far supercede the two disadvantages I just mentioned. Only time will tell how succesful this concept can be. - carbonetc, on 12/28/2007, -1/+4At this point a multi-touch tablet PC makes more sense. Limiting it to just a keyboard with some fancy capabilities is a step backwards.
- supermanred, on 12/28/2007, -0/+3Why, is this too new fangled for ya?
- Logicexe, on 12/28/2007, -0/+3I don't know about you but I've never had to touch type a cellphone or an MP3 player.
That said, I would definitely be open to trying something like this out. I have a habit of looking down at the keyboard as I type anyway so the lack of tactile feedback shouldn't bother me much. - SteveTheSultan, on 12/28/2007, -0/+3I got to feel my keys
- jcc6655, on 12/28/2007, -0/+3that was the first thing i thought of when i saw this LOL
- adikt, on 12/28/2007, -0/+3I surpassed all future concept input devices by jamming my motherboard into my frontal cortex.
- thcobbs, on 12/28/2007, -0/+3Annnnnnnnnnnd, how much is THIS one going to cost? 2k? 5k?
Your first born child/robot? (come on, we know some diggers are never gonna get laid by a human girl) - Urusai, on 12/28/2007, -1/+4Wipes clean easily, too.
- tibbon, on 12/28/2007, -0/+3Just get a Lemur. It's multitouch, color, and its out!
- Andrew67, on 12/29/2007, -0/+3Sure thing Koko
- prisoner24601, on 12/28/2007, -0/+3Just out of curiosity, have you ever tried one of those laser keyboards on a mouspad-type surface? Seems like it would work and solve the impact problem.
- fujofly, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2Wow rocking the Tatu music video. All the things she said.
- mihkeltt, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2i absolutely like the concept on a touchscreen table learning your hands positions and then automatically "creating" the keyboard under your hands once you've touched the screen with all then fingers - pure awsome.
- masterc, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2Exactly. He should focus on getting the Maximus out the door before he dreams up another vaporware item.
- ThatguyKS, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2The innovation is bringing Tactile feedback into the touch screen keyboard arena...... read the apple patent link.
Also check out the gallery at the bottom. Do the girls about to make out come with the keyboard?? -
