- DJFMA, on 10/12/2007, -6/+42No-where in the title or description is the word game even mentioned....
- Magadass, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18pretty funny that Video Cards is so tightly coupled with reference to Games these days that the human brain automatically will make it appear as though the two are synonymous!
- Sumo_Budah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13but it is still cool, even though it kinda scares me that a video card has twice the RAM as my computer
- OregonTrail, on 10/12/2007, -7/+181. There is no WinXP native Mac that supports graphics upgrades as of late
2. This card most likely does not support any type of scalable interface
3. That would not be a sweet gaming rig - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10holy hell.. it seems like 32 meg video cards were high-end just yesterday.. and i'm only 17.
- tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11The Dell is also Quad-SLI. This is a single card.
- themulf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Man i would love to have that, maya would be cooken'!
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8My wallet just started to cry.....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Why can't one use it for gaming? ATI FireGL Unified Driver version 8.083 works pretty well with most games, and if it doesn't work with a certain game, you can always hack the Catalyst drivers to install on your FireGL.
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -1/+6I'm 17 too, and it really does seem like just yesterday I was squeezing the life out of my 2MB s3 Virge. A whole 80Mhz I think I got it clocked too..
Heh, then again.. there's probably a lot of people here who can reminisce about their 128k Trident cards :/ - sanmarcos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6What is the point really? Neither ATI or NVIDIA are innovating in big ways, just upping things up. Like AMD and Intel were as of a few months ago.
- ptoast, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Yes thats the whole point of "never to be outdone". ATI released this, Nvidia will release something next, then ATI, and so on.
- bonoes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Sorry mate. Maybe because your title isn't correct. This isn't thier first 1gb card, like someone posted above.
Digg is crazy sexy cool and totally unpredictable. Glad you guys liked the story. - dc7407, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3sh*t, by then my f*kin pentium XXXII will have 5gb of ram.
- Overdose, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Okay, so you use it for maya, w00t, We can not use it for gaming or anything. Just maya, and other 3D programs.
- FarcicalFart, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You CAN still use this for gaming, and you will not see much of a difference until you get into the REALLY high end games. It still renders just fine for most games. It is cheaper (and better) to get a gaming card for, well, gaming...
- matthewecornish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Not a missleading title but you're right, this is their production card, not a gaming card.
- jerrygofixit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I still have a Trident card, although not in use anymore, was thinking about donating it to the Museum of Science and Industry.
- parth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't think anyone who is buying this would have only 1 GB of RAM on their system. Only people like me have 1 GB...
- phobet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow! 1G of memory? That's pretty nuts! Man, I wonder how long it will take for someone to get Linux to run on it!
- Genius16, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3it didnt get popular because it only had a box shot. no picture of an actual card people can identify with.
which is lame, if you ask me. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5The 7900gtx2 isn't a "workstation graphics accelerator."
- phore, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7how is it misleading?
- Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6"Never to be outdone" well, until the Nvidia 8 series is released, but whatever.
- kenz0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Has half the amount of my desktop and 256mb less than my laptop."
wowwwww, youre so special! - siouxmoux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So now you can have the same amount of Vram and Main system ram on your system.
- kenz0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1uh
what - joxrox22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do I hear a 2GB video card? Any takers? 3 or 4GB? Aww, heck make it a cool 5GB to play Duke Nukem Forever when it comes out.
- SniperSlap, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Never to be outdone? ATI is the worst video card maker since the X800, and they haven't been able to get anything right since. NVidia has been kicking them from one side of the room to the other, several times now.
If it isn't drivers holding ATI's cards back, its the fact that their cards are seldom offering enough performance to justify the price. If it isn't either of those reasons, its because ATI releases video cards in the wrong price bracket and lets Sapphire make the ripoff cards.
I used to work at a computer store and everyone there was gaga over ATI video cards. They kept pushing them because there was either some known mod/overclock or because they just hadn't realized that NVidia blew past them in quality & performance. Time to wake up.
ATI: The card of the fanboys. - joxrox22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a Canopus Pure 3Dfx 4MB and I'm running it with a Matrox Millenium 200 on Win98 SE P3 256mb playing Quake 2 and games of that era. Yeah and it's still sweet. Especially the most powerful 3D card ever made Voo Doo 6000. BAMMMM! (Just adding in-THX)
- Matteos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Brought to you by NVidia fan boys everywhere...
- dgritsko, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5yeah man, i agree it is definitely scary. i just don't know about video cards these days... if we give 'em too much ram, they may... um... perform better! run for the hills everyone!
- dgritsko, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3yeah man... digg needs to come up with a better way for stories to get to the front page. maybe one-click access to the queue so that more people read the stories in there, or "suggested stories" based on previous diggs? that way, you'd be able to contribute your digg to something that interested you before. the way it stands right now, several people often submit the same story to digg, and it becomes a creativity contest to see who titles their article so that it gets the most diggs. don't get me wrong, i love this site, i just think it needs some refinement here and there.
- jus1haz2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4ATI Technologies has announced the industry’s first one gigabyte (1GB) workstation graphics accelerator
doesnt nvidia have a 7900gtx2 with 1024mb or video ram? How is this the 1st one :S - drbroccoli, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3ZOMG JIGGABYTEZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
- Ethyriel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's hard to believe they beat 3D Labs to the punch. I guess that's what happens when you get bought by Creative?
I remember they had 256 and 512MB cards years ago, and they're still stuck at 640MB now. - jerrygofixit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wow, your beloved Nvidia does the same. Nvidia has better driver support for linux, but you've never heard of XGA? eVGA? Just search froogle for Geforce under $50. It's called a mid-range card. It's so people that aren't rich can actually afford something decent.
- Clearz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I wish I could give you -2. -1 for not knowing the diference between 2x512 and 1x1024 cards and -1 for not reading the similar post a few up from yours.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Nvidia is still more bang for the buck.
- Genius16, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1i second this notion. i second this notion baddddd.
- Arsi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0If anything could do 1080p gaming, it's this thing.
- edmcguirk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0So, instead of buying a motherboard with integrated video that uses system RAM for video, can I buy a graphics card with integrated motherboard that uses video RAM for the CPU?
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0who knows, maybe one day they will store so much memory, that due to, i dont know, a freak lighting bolt, they will become sentient and start deciding to maybe, um, not load any models wearing gloves on their left hand, i fear that day
- Demagogue, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5My Radeon Xpress 200M can run Wow like butta tooo....
- cwong, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Your first line wasn't "Never to be outdone".
- fluffyturtle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1You guys will digg anything. Old news? Yes. Dupe? Yes. Digg? NO.
- Deradorn, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4I submitted the same story first over 2 days ago http://digg.com/technology/ATI_unwraps_first_1GB_graphics_card some how it only managed only 15 diggs
- mmartin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Plus, they don't "do" sli. You could get a crossfire card, but then you wouldn't be getting this one, then, would you?
- Sonizel, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1in my dream would that would be yesterday
but in the real would I think the engineers would first have to put that advanced liquid cooling thing on the cards first...so I think for the 10 GHZ that would be by the end of 2008 - dickyducky, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1so when will we have a 10 ghz GPU (not CPU)?
