- joeshlub, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28You have like 17 pages of stories commented on, and only one story ever dug. And it was about japanese toilets. What's up with that?
- ericcc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I don't think the majority of people care about high-end processors anyway. I think most people (myself included) will be eyeing the 3200 or 3600's for under a 100$. That should be more than enough to play a ton of great games.
I mean my 2GHz Pentium four still rocks Far Cry and HL2 with a Radeon 9800SE 128MB and 768MB of RAM. Or am I completely off base? - sitryd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14http://esl.about.com/library/weekly/aa110698.htm
"spelt" is the british past tense, "spelled" is the american. both are correct. - ThanatosDiggs, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15The scare of intel's upcoming processors is scaring amd and it is inevitable that they would do something like this. 47% is a bit high but they need to get on the right track and get the procsessors pumping out that will run extreme games with say the crysis engine even better than the quadcore.
- usefulidiot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13dont you mean so that you can build/compile gentoo in 30 minutes? :)
- iignotus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Well, the Conroe X2 E6600 is also coming out, and only for about $310, and it currently outperforms EVERYTHING AMD has to offer, so AMD's price cuts are a step in the right direction, but AMD still needs to do a bit of catching-up.
As always, don't be a fanboy towards any company. Sit back and enjoy the processor wars, and go with the winner. Right now it's Conroe for the high end, but that could change any day. - lament, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11that's MSRP.. newegg will have it for cheaper.. hopefully. :)
- kaffein, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9AMDs low end $90 Athlon 64 3000+ @ 1.8GHz will 'run' Crysis according to the minimum specs shown today on digg. Also the recommended shows that the lowest X2 processor is fine, the $158 AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ @ 2GHz. So I think AMD has had the processors out there that can run Crysis for quite some time.
(Think of the developers, the low end now was probably the high end at the time they started development.) - Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9The FX-62 definitely isn't cost-effective even with the price drop, but that X2 5000 sounds awfully enticing, and maintains price-performance viability according to the article.
- scutter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I don't think it is "scaring" them or is an overreaction at all. With the release of Conroe, Intel has a processor that is faster and cheaper. They need to cut their prices in order to remain competitive. It is as simple as that. I think the announced price cuts are reasonable, with the exception of the FX-62. I guess they are counting on selling that to "enthusiasts" who are upgrading an existing AMD-based system or who have decided to go with AMD for whatever reason.
- Comsamvimes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8But damn, the 5000+ is going to be $30 more than expected. Argh, I guess I'll just have to eat the costs, because I really wanted it.
- FuzzyLumpkins76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Does anyone know when we can expect to see these prices out in the retail market? Places like Newegg etc.
- mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Not to stick up for AMD, but $860 for a top-end chip is not too bad. I prefer Intel myself, but I would spend $860 on a FX-62 before $1100+ on an Extreme Edition. Guess we'll have to wait to see exact prices on the Core 2's.
- oyourmom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Why isnt "Socket" spelt correctly on the table. Just a heads up.
- mieses, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6AM2 is forward compatible with AM3 and DDR3. there is some benefit in the nice upgrade path.
http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/07/06/amd_socket_am3_compatibility/
the new intel performance seems to be a result of increased cache speeds (?) which help in simple workloads. AMD seems to be focussing on the heavy lifting, memory bandwidth, inter-cpu bandwidth, interconnects, co-processors, parallelization, etc. - spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6If you refer to the earlier articles about the pricedrops they are not because of intel's new chips. AMD is cutting many product lines in order to streamline their production, and by so doing, they are able to cut their prices.
- kaffein, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@mfratt,
The AMD 5000+ is a better price/performance value than the FX-62 atm, although I will probably pickup a X2 AM2 4200+ when I build my new rig. $180-190ish now, can't beat that. - mycatsboots, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5When are retailers goign to start reflecting these price cuts?
I was looking to move on to a 64 X2 3800+ and other appropriate hardware. - ochito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5nope... newegg still has the old prices. I'm also waiting on those to drop. Conroe looks sweet, but if these cuts are true, and newegg manages to discount them even a bit more, I might still go X2. Boards are also more mature, there are more choices, and they cost less across the board than for Intel. Will definitely have to keep my eye on this.
- ericcc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Supposedly they are streamlining production and cutting down on low volume models so productions costs should fall in line whith their new wholesale prices.
- aerotive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Anyone who believes AMD's malarkey about improving efficiency/streamlining production is delusional. This is all about responding to Conroe.
And I must say the X2 4200+ looks quite tempting now... - int19h, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You englishians should really unify your languages
- eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I want a laptop for school and I want AMD to come out with their answer to the core 2 before I get it, because I have a feeling it will be good. This is just sort of a stopgap.
- weiran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Does this mean AMD had a >47% profit margin, or they're just taking a hit for the increased market share?
- Rickler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4That's wholesale. Unless you have a wholesale license, expect 10% more for retail prices.
- m4v1s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Man, you really need to step back and look at the whole thing before you make such a claim. Yes Intel is kicking ass with the new Conroe chips. But you are comparing Intel's bleeding edge technology with AMD's 3 year old design. AMD does have some catching up to do but until Intel starts playing fair with the companies it makes deals with, I will continue buying AMD's chips over theirs.
- Linh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2we might be waiting a while. I'm curious as to AMD's internal reaction to conroe... I'm sure they knew intel had something up their sleeve, but something as good as this? The quad core architecture really doesn't sound like it will be as significant a leap as AMD will need. At least, at the consumer level.
- LyrradMelon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2O yea! I've been waiting for this. it's time to upgrade my 3800+ X2...not really necessary but I've got some money layin around that isn't going to be used for much else.
- Sapperlite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well can I have your old one? :)
- goffy59, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Im waiting for AMD's next move. Intel is kickin some ass.
- whyaxewhy5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Price drop is very nice. Makes it more tempting to upgrade my current comp or build a second box.
- m4v1s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Newegg just dropped prices on most single-core AM2 chips, the X2 3800 is 169.00 and the X2 4200 is 199.00
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, Newegg is still trying to keep its higher prices. Monarch has dropped though, and I trust them just as much as I do Newegg.
- atbnet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Perhaps you missed the point of how they aren't doing this to compete with Intel.
- m4v1s, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Maybe they are clearing out inventory to make room for new quad-core 65nm chips.
**Fingers Crossed** - willizm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1X2 4200+ for 939 is $183 at ewiz.com. You may still have to pay for shipping though, wait till you see what other etailors are doing before buying from newegg.com. They may adjust more to be competetive with other sites.
http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?p=A64-42BVBX&c=fr&pid=f0aaf88007a956d5b5f60cac514ad54a83c952d0baf26d0bbba42f33b500bd89 - arachnist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yay, now i'll be able to upgrade to something reasonable, and within my price range. And that p2 400 i'm using currently will do what it was meant to do from the beggining (router/server).
ps, Intel cpu's do not fit in the "reasonable" category. And i'm doubtful if their desktop cpu's support >4GB of ram and this fancy new virtualization technology which are killer features for me. - Champ2020, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did anyone think that AMD's response to this was purchasing ATI?
- SirBryce, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4It was translated from Israel, where the stuff was released, according to that page.
- Nightspark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Maybe they're responding to Conroe by improving efficiency/streamlining production?
- Rickler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Shh, keep that to yourself. We don't want to wait in a line of back orders for the E6600 :)
- Jorenm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0These price cuts aren't NEARLY enough. As some have mentioned the lowest end conroe destroys every chip AMD has on the market. Anyone who buys amd right now is an idiot. (I bought a opteron 165 3 months ago and I'm kicking myself).
- asdf25, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1mfratt,
I think you must not be aware of just how Conroe X6800 blows away FX-62 in all benchmarks. Also Conroe overclocks extremely well, so you're likely to end up being able to run an X6800 at 4GHz with air cooling (stock is 2.9GHz). If FX-62 is only being dropped to $850 you'd have to be an utter moron to even consider buying it. - splaf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's unfortunate most comments I've read around the web seem to focus solely on the price/performance metric. For me Conroe is a clear upgrade path due to it's exemplary metric of power/performance, more so than it's raw performance alone.
I've been salivating for a dual core CPU ever since I first saw a dual Pentium 200MHz which was the most responsibe computer I've ever seen. However, not even the AMD X2 offering seemed *perfect* due to rather high energy consumption, but now with the low powered Pentium-M successor rolling out the 27th there finally is a perfect choice, both for performance geeks and us low thermal nuts. - Erroneus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25000 X2 Req. price/perf for adv. over Intel = 355
I really really don't agree on this. Intel Core Duo 2 E6600 costs 316$ dollars and is clearly a faster, cooler and better CPU then 5000 X2 (and fx62 also btw.), so the the 5000 X2 should drop down to a price like 275 before it was really competive. - terminalcore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The impact of this may affect quite a few other companies, such as Nintendo.
See http://digg.com/tech_news/Future_Of_Nintendo_Graphics_In_The_Hands_Of_AMD_ATI. - Aceanuu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Amazing. I'm ordering a computer from newegg, er, I'm ordering the parts. I guess I'll cancel my order... heh. I was annoyed that my order wasn't proccesed on Friday, but I guess that means I can now afford a single core 64 +4000 or even nice instead of having to go with a +3700!
- leesto, on 12/17/2008, -3/+1Has anyone else got a broken link?
- atrain, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1From what I understand, monarch and tigerdirect (single core models only) have started selling them with the reduced prices. I'm not sure of others, but i assume that newegg has as well.
- busyanuj, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1they had to do it sooner or later.
with the latest of processors from Intel's stable outperforming AMD's processors, they had to do something to entice the user to buy their processors. Though a 47% price drop is ridiculous. -
