- wbagdon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13so now the zune will be a phone, gaming system, media device, this is starting to sound like the Origami, all they need is good a good use of the WiFi
- mrdirkdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Actually Imageon has been around for a while. What the author probably means here is the next-generation of Imageon.
At any rate, this would definitely make a sweet GPU for a more full-feature Zune. Check out that screenshot. It's not PSP, but it's not too shabby either. - tektalk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'd gladly get get an "xboy" if they develop a handheld Gears of War game on it.
- GuyNamedNate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7This is a great idea by AMD. I don't see Microsoft doing an "Xboy" but I could see this tech in a future Zune product. In fact, Microsoft could kill two birds with one stone and make a future Zune that was also a phone, and a gaming platform. Mobile convergence seems inevitable and with Microsofts great developer support the Zune could really take off with tech like this.
On a slightly different note, Microsoft could add XNA support for this (imaginary) future version of Zune to complete the package quite nicely. - worthbak, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10pretty sure theres about a million of us now... http://digg.com/tech_news/1_Miiiiiillion_Users
so close your face. - mntpng, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5So.. Does this mean handhelds will start making noises like jet is taking off?
- superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think they should drop the whole zune branding and make their mp3 player xbox branded, it would probably help sales tremendously just by doing that.
I personally think the problem is developers arent really developing for hand helds. Most games are miniatures of at-home console counterparts, I haven't seen any games that are to the hand held as GTA 3 was to the PS2, or Halo 2 to xbox - YumYumKittyLoaf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Think of the Home Brew programs on those things. It'd be a great handheld computer. If they make it more powerful than a PSP, i'd buy it.
- evilpanda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2NVIDIA has already had a jump on 3D GPUs for phones and handhelds for quite a bit as well as having good developer support. What exactly will ATI bring? Unified Shader Architecture is nice and all but mobile/handheld programming is significantly different than console programming.
- xShad0w, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The problem with the psp is the screens pixels are too big to be high quality, the 3d is totally screwed because of that so if they can make the pixel density smaller and up the resolution by two fold on a handheld then they actually have a reason to put an ATi graphics chip inside a handheld, otherwise it just sucks up battery life and creates heat...anyone else agree, and lets just say imageon not the best example to show off the power of this thing, it looks worse then psp
- Smarterdanu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I see the NextGen Zune playing more XBL marketplace games, rather than full fledged PSP type games.
- Chingmiester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2After playing Gears of War at my work on a theater screen, I doubt I could handle it on a tiny handheld.
- lacronicus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1really. the unified architecture was something inevitable for graphics cards. they were only seperated to begin with because shader speed was the bottleneck, now its the number of shaders, and so unification eliminates teh bottleneck. all next gen gfx cards wil have it, whats the big deal?
- SSCrow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Unified Shaders are not just Xbox Technology..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Zune Phone / Xboy
- lacronicus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1umd's only hold 1.8 gigs of data. considering the growing space in hard drives, and the ever decreasing prices, id opt for a simple download system, rather than require discs for games. it would likely help relieve the cost of games through decreased distribution costs, and provide the ability to download games. that would also allow games to be distributed for much cheaper, much like the marketplace. while some games may require a full 2 gigs, but some may only require 20 megs, so why should they require a full 2 gig disc? for taht matter, why should you pay for a full 2 gig disc. i would definitely go for a good download service.
- negativefx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I wonder if this tech will be complemented with a terrible driver set just like ATI's PC video cards...
- Goldbricker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If I could bring Gears of War to work with me I might not ever get ANYTHING done.
- KamikazeeDriver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Regardless of capabilities, It won't set the standard if the populus doesn't consider it worth the money. The rich will buy anything, everyone else makes a media, a MP3 player, DVD, etc the standard format.
If the cost isn't reasonable the masses don't bother, and you need the masses to make your product the standard. - Kericr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd have to say that the "Xboy" is still at least a few years out. Microsoft has had good, but not great success with the XBox; even with it's head-start it's probably going to still finish second amongst consoles this generation to the Wii and it's accellerated sales rate, and the Zune is a catastrophe. Microsoft will make sure that they have a respectable product in the Zune before they try to intoduce a hand-held game console/integrate games into the Zune, I'm sure they don't want to be the next nGage.
- daedalus1982, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ mrdirkdiggler
what makes you say that 360 < PSP ?
i just cant wait to see what ben heckendorn does with the stuff they make from this. - fr0ng, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1meh
- jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1kami, we'll see if your views hold any weight when the massively overpriced iphone is released. for some things, people will pay hand over fist for very little gain. the ps3 is another fine case in point.
- whiteguysamurai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I haven't actually had a hand held for quite some time, in fact my last portable was the neo geo pocket.
I would buy one of these, if they made one. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Exactly, PSP type games need lots of space (which is why it needed UMD)
- demizu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Not so useful, but... Things never change.
- RaysinX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1still won't buy the stock
- Sepeteus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1After Microsoft named their handheld console X-Son people started to realize who were behind the war in Iraq.

- alexdamin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nice story....liked it
- trevogre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The real problem with the PSP is a lack of quality exclusive content. There is not one game that I can think of that interested me. I don't want to play shooters on any analog joystick platform and there is no Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Castlevania, Kid Icarus.. you get the point. Please name something for the PSP that isn't forgettable (and not a shooter) so I can buy something that will get me to take it off the shelf.
Now if Microsoft followed the formula that they have with the 360 on a handheld I would go into the mountains and freeze myself and have a friend thaw me out when it was released. A handheld with achievement points... that would be cool. I can barely get myself to play an untracked game anymore. I bought games that are superior on the pc, that I already owned, for the 360 just so I could get the achievement points. I know they don't do anything but that doesn't matter to me I'm addicted. I even look them up on my cell phone to plan what I'm going to achieve next.
I also love the branded content on the ds but I can't wait until the have a unified scoring system. Its the perfect platform for it. The mario games are already built with various goals in each level that are ready for grouping into achievements.
Of course my hope would be that instead of releasing a gaming only mobile platform that Microsoft would extend the Live experience to its windows mobile 6 product line and release reliable 1st party devices and an xna mobile platform. - gimpism, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0oh it's ARS - alrighty, I'll read...
- Zalyster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Great, the Zune will go from media player to where the PSP's been.
- moft, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1the reason you were dugg down, even if it isn't spam, is because nobody cared - it's like a derro showing everyone his Mitsubishi that's had some lamearse body kit attached to make it look like a Ford.
also, like a rap contest, you don't insult your audience just to get a point across - it doesn't win the crowd's love or attention and you end up losing. - chingy1788, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1AMD developing a new GPU for hand held devices eh?
Nintendo will take adv of this... probably
for those who dont know
AMD and ATI has merged
and ATI makes Nintendo's GPUs (game cube, DS(i think) and Wii) and now Microsoft's Xbox 360's - negativefx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2and it will still sell more units than PSP! :)
- negativefx, on 10/12/2007, -18/+2"Your a dumb ass!!!" hahahahaha
