- LittleLORDevil, on 04/23/2009, -3/+267Can we get most software to fully utilize 4 cores first?
- seanstuart, on 04/23/2009, -3/+152In 2011, this processor will cost you $800.
In 2012, it will cost you $50. - lemur, on 04/23/2009, -3/+120Most programs can't run on multiple cores, but most people run multiple programs, so the OS can divvy up the work to reduce the load.
- AngelBunny, on 04/23/2009, -3/+90but will it play ... doom 4?
- pimpofpixels, on 04/23/2009, -4/+90Bold futurist predictions:
"AMD announces 32-core CPU for 2013"
"AMD announces 64-core CPU for 2015"
"AMD announces 128-core CPU for 2017"
"AMD announces 256-core CPU for 2019"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore%27s_law - swordedge, on 04/23/2009, -15/+100Here is the set of current OSes that would be more than a tiny bit faster with 16 cores then 8
Empty Set - daqq, on 04/23/2009, -1/+82Core is the new bit.
- Tkuebrich, on 04/23/2009, -4/+83Because 16 is better than 1...I could seriously see this getting some ladies.
- pathouston22, on 04/23/2009, -6/+84I believe I can fly
- MrMeikel, on 04/23/2009, -5/+79I believe OSes run programs, some of which will be faster with more cores.
- diggan8, on 04/23/2009, -2/+68Joe: Umm.. this processor has 12 bad cores. I just throw it away right?
Mike: No, that's what we call a quad core.
Joe: We can do that? - SummerofGeorge, on 04/23/2009, -2/+57mmm no
the bottleneck is and will be for some time the hard drive - BooLag, on 04/23/2009, -3/+57I believe I can touch the sky
- bluezombie, on 04/23/2009, -0/+54So ... 16 cores ... but will they all agree on the right course of action or will they need to form committees?
- ricerfuel, on 04/23/2009, -3/+54Dugg for originality
- Rudegar, on 04/23/2009, -6/+57640K cores is enough for everybody ;)
- sully213, on 04/23/2009, -3/+52I think about it every night and day
- SSUK, on 04/23/2009, -3/+51Spread my wings and fly awaaay
- unabsolute, on 04/23/2009, -11/+58yes, but I could run Linux on 2 cores, OSX on 4 cores and that would leave me 8 cores left to run Windows Vista, maybe.
- RaulMuadDib, on 04/23/2009, -3/+48I believe I can soar
- ilikeeggs8877, on 04/23/2009, -6/+44wtf is wrong with you people? are you seriously saying that companies shouldn't make this stuff because software vendors suck ass? what do you want amd/intel to do, send all their engineers on a field trip to ms/apple/adobe/etc and force them to make better software...? 16 cores sounds ***** awesome!
- TheMidnight, on 04/23/2009, -3/+39See me running through that open dooooooooooooooor!
- Izz1011, on 04/23/2009, -2/+38You know what else rises with inflation!
- bigteebo, on 04/23/2009, -2/+35Screw it, we're going to have SEVEN blades!
- bffoley, on 04/23/2009, -1/+33And what if some of the cores unionize and go on strike?
- slythfox, on 04/23/2009, -3/+35Isn't the Linux Kernel optimized for many, many cores?
- spyder06, on 04/23/2009, -2/+31"These go to eleven"
- ASfinkterSezWut, on 04/23/2009, -1/+27Virtual machines and multi-app environments, servers, SolarisX-86 with some nice Database and/or Web server apps running... yup, you betcha I can use this. My Sun T2000's are certainly smokin, but rather expensive... this might be a nice option for a smaller site.
But as swordedge points out, it probably wouldn't help much on my desktop when I am crushing my enemies; driving them before me and hearing the lamentations of their women... but I think it still might be a good thing... 8-) - ChileanGoD, on 04/23/2009, -1/+27One day, every task on the windows task manager will have it's own dedicated core.
- firebirdx01, on 04/23/2009, -4/+28AMD's new strategy- can't win the processor wars now, so win them in the future.
- seanstuart, on 04/23/2009, -0/+24I think that's because blowjobs (when given from the same quality of provider) provide the exact same benefit year after year, never becoming obselete, and so they naturally rise with inflation.
- lennybird, on 04/23/2009, -0/+22I sure as hell can't wait. 3D Animation programs such as Maya, 3ds Max, and Blender will easily be able to take a hold of this power at the consumer level, which will help me out a lot.
- MuadDave, on 04/23/2009, -2/+2416 Processors is so last year - I want one of these 64 processor puppies for a compute-intense math problem I'm working on: http://tilera.com/products/processors.php
- RaulMuadDib, on 04/23/2009, -3/+24I believe I can fly
- maz2331, on 04/23/2009, -1/+21They go back-and-forth. Intel tends to make steady progress over AMD, then AMD releases a huge leapfrog past them.
- amorrise, on 04/23/2009, -1/+20I too am poor
- 1Bad, on 04/23/2009, -3/+21You are an idiot.
- jseres, on 04/23/2009, -13/+31Intels Dick =====D 0 Your mouth.
- grexeo, on 04/23/2009, -0/+18I dunno, I think they'd be freaked out tbh.
- inactive, on 04/23/2009, -0/+18I wish it were the same for blowjobs.
- WarriorBlake, on 04/23/2009, -0/+17BALLS OF STEEL!
- osoroco, on 04/23/2009, -1/+18Memo:
Cuba - communist country near Florida
Cuda - programming language for GPU's - angelgabe, on 04/23/2009, -0/+17I see what you did there.
- AndrewMoyer, on 04/23/2009, -0/+16Give me power and I will find a use for it.
- amorrise, on 04/23/2009, -1/+17Doesn't the Enterprise run on a 16 core processor?
- ASfinkterSezWut, on 04/23/2009, -1/+17...and antivirus2009 will absolutely love that!
/s - iamfreestyle, on 04/23/2009, -0/+16thats when a rival of skynet is created.
- jgruber, on 04/23/2009, -2/+17Don't forget embedded solutions which CAN use the cores. Desktops aren't the only target here.
- smilgy, on 04/23/2009, -0/+15BALLS BALLS BALLS
- tofagerl, on 04/23/2009, -2/+17Wow, that's 100 % utter and complete nonsense!
