- v4r4n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Do you realize how much money they spend on research? If anything, they'll buy the next big thing...
- 81v3d07g0d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4As with most things, and with computers - I finally get myself an AMD chip ( dual core ) and of course next thing I know Intel has or trumped AMD on speed and performance. I am sure more of you are aware of the 802 D overclocking to 4 ghz, sure could have saved some money over the 300 I paid for the x2 3800+. I just cant win. I have a much nicer comp than most of people I know but it sure does suck when when you think that you really have it figured out what the best thing for the money is and the next day you feel ripped off.
- smartpatrol, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It's not going to happen. AM2 offers basically no performance increase over 939. The FX-60 even outperforms the FX-62 in some cases.
http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=5692 Here you can see sub-2.8 GHz Conroe (you'll see that they couldn't reveal the exact clockspeed due to NDA) beating an FX-62 in most benchmarks. From the conclusion: "There's no real need for a summary. The benchmarks tell all. Intel's Conroe simply outmuscles every currently available CPU. Would you buy an AMD Athlon 64 FX-62 now? AMD must be thinking that K8-L can't come soon enough.
A little bird also tells us that the Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme Edition may well debut with a 3GHz clockspeed. Just imagine that. Gentlemen and ladies, start your salivating."
From Ars Technica's news story today http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060523-6890.html "With the official launch of Conroe next month, all the benchmarking should be scrutinized carefully. That said, Intel looks poised to recapture the desktop CPU performance lead from AMD once the Core 2 Duo CPUs arrive on the market. " - Velaru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Other then the Socket change the real big thing in this revision is the low power chips. Those and those alone are why I'll pick up an AM2 board soon.
- nkco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5First of all, you're comparing an Intel processor that won't be out for 6 months, to an AMD processor that has already been out for 6 months. A 12 month gap in the semiconductor industry is an eternity. Secondly, do you think AMD is just sitting around with their thumbs up their as*es doing nothing? Of course AMD is going to have an answer. Will it be out when Intel launches Conroe? probably not. It's no coincidence that AMD has been totally silent about their road map while Intel has been plastering theirs all over the place. Intel knows it's in trouble and needs to stop the hemorrhaging. Thirdly, hiding clock speeds due to NDA? HAHAHA that's hilarious. Intel isn't disclosing this because they have such horrible yield issues they don't even know what speeds they're going to be able to reliably fab. Bottom line is Intel is a good corporation with a lot of talent and money, and it's only a matter of time before they dig themselves back out; but don't think for a second that AMD is going to roll over and die. All this article means is that future Intel technology will run faster than past AMD technology, woopty do!
- floguy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Come on AMD, keep ahead of Intel for just a little bit longer! I'd hate to see Intel regain the speed crown as they seem like they will do.
- SilentPurity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No one should buy the current versions, you should all wait for their 65 nanometer processors later this year. I already noticed that newegg currently has like 5 Motherboard for AM2 and two AM2 processors at this time, all of which are rips offs.
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Con-hoe
- SilentPurity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Can you die?
- Garda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You do realise that both the Wii and the PS3 use chips from IBM
- nkco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Intel claims Conroe will be out this July. When was the last time Intel released a product on time? Even if they do release it on time, don't expect many places to stock them for a few months.
- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1amd isnt gonna win the battle this year, and they know it.
if you keep up with latest interviews with amd staff, you would know that amd is right where it wants to be, and they know conroe is going to pwn them in performance.
amd is constantly gaining market share, even more so this year. This is their main goal. They use to make drastic changes to their architecture, to put one over on intel, to get where they are right now. Right now, amd is thinking if it aint broke dont fix it, just improve it slightly.
They have already anounced talks of quad core cpu (as has intel) for 2007, and also have mentioned a new line of chips slated for the end of the year (perhaps this will be the conroe killer)
so untill end of this year, to 2007, intel will be winning in performance, while amd is gaining market share
and ya, i will be picking up a new mobo/am2 proc this summer, even though what i just said - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1conroe will be out this July....
- Lordless, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've always liked AMD. I hope they can come up with something worth Digging, this just barely is. I wish them luck in their attempts to outperform the competition.
- mlvassallo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2AMD has a few large things planed for the end of the year. Think of that as a hint from a little bird as well. Also, no clock speed because of a NDA? Gimme a break!
As far as "they are competing with blinders on"- did you just want to use a metaphor today or will you elaborate on your point? - shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3make up your mind
- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2i am sure that someone will come out of nowhere and beat them both. They are competing with blinders on. A new technology will replace their useless chips and people will move on to the next big thing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2about time amd stopped slacking off
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5lets see amd try and catch up to intel
- ohhhL3ThaL, on 10/12/2007, -27/+2Nintendo could make a better processor than AMD
actually no Sony Could. The Wii sucks. PS3 4 life

What is Digg?
