- cwill, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20Can someone tell me what the article is talking about? This article remindsf me of the old Batman TV series. POW! BANG! ZING!
- infiniti029, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Where are my X2 35W EE chips dammit!
- kwood, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Are you guys kidding? AMD was crushing/kicking Intel's butt, but the new Conroe core that Intel just released (the Core 2 Duo processor) has AMD pinned in every contest but power consumption. Even there it's close. These new chips do show that AMD is finding a way to respond to Intel's comeback, but it's still not anything to bring them back into the lead.
- tidu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9btw the new X2 5000+ is $600 on http://newegg.com ... and that's open-box.
4800+ is $307. seems like a big jump to me. - petard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You JUST moved to a northwood? Northwood is very VERY old, I got mine 3 years ago! It is way outdated now! Why would you upgrade to one? And I thought AMD was beating Intel in the northwood days?
- DiamondIce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Coherency meet Jock McFrock. Jock McFrock meet Coherency. While we're on the subject, here are my good friends Spell Check, and Proof Read.
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7AMD's on the short end of the stick right now. Intel's Core 2 Duo chips blow it away.
- RedRenesis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7It would have helped if the article was washed through an english dictionary before they posted it on their site.
- nTensify, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Right, because people can't use Froogle to find a $50 Conroe-compatible motherboard.
For that matter, most (not all, but most) motherboards manufactured to support the latest Pentium 4s/Ds (Cedar Mills, Presler) will also support Conroe. That means for anyone who built a machine in the past, oh, year or so on the LGA775 socket can simply unplug their processor, and drop in a Conroe, flash their BIOS and be up and running with Conroe. Too bad you'll have to buy a new motherboard when upgrading to AM2 chips. - aznboi04k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3they're wasting their time. they should be focusing on chip redesign
- imacyco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm gonna guess English is not your mother tongue.
- jejones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Alas, the writers at the Inquirer are of the sort that violate Strunk & White's warning "Do not affect a breezy manner." They seem to be terminally obsessed with their own fancied cleverness.
- SamiJam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@kwood
No one is kidding. AMD will blow the damn out of Intel, Sure the new Intel chips are faster but they are comparing Intel's 65nm chip with AMD's 90nm chips. And of the damn course the 65nm process technology is faster than 90nm. So the comparision is not fair. Let's see who will kicks whoes ass when AMD's 65nm chips are ready.
@tidu
The AMD X2 5000+ only costs 296€ here in Finland. - imacyco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Inquirer has always been like that. It takes a while but you do get used to the language.
- ullerrm, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7The problem is, it ISN'T an advance, technology wise.
Conroe is a derivation from Pentium M (which, I might add, was just a P3 with the extra processor state block for HT, on a new process) with a shorter, wider pipeline. The microcode has been updated with what Intel's marketroids call "Macro-Op Fusion" -- which is a dumb way of saying "we look an operation or two ahead and will substitute equivalent-but-faster macroops where possible -- incs for adds, ors for reflexive cmp, etc." Smart, sure, but nothing that hasn't been done before.
It's the best CPU that Intel has ever produced, and it's kicking AMD's ass and taking names -- but please, please, everyone, stop going on like it's some revolution in CPU technology; it's not. It's still the same CISC architecture, with all the weirdnesses that x86 is famous for. It's just a little better than before -- which is reason enough for me to upgrade. - dsn0wman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4You cant really count asrock as a motherboard, because nobody in their right mind is gonna put their cool new core 2 duo on this piece of junk.
- alchipx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'm so very tired of the constant AMD / Intel bickering of "coming back with a vengeance" or "AMD will respond soon", etc, etc. Can we just admit that the Core 2 micro-architecture Intel has released is a significant advance CPU technology wise? AMD is not showcasing this launch because they're more concerned about spinning the PR from the AMD / ATI merger. AMD knows their X2 processors can't compete with their C2D equivalent in the long run, so rather than making a big deal out of this relatively minor launch, they putting their PR resources elsewhere, which is smart.
No one (not even the biggest Intel fan boys) thinks AMD will go away. They'll analyze Conroe thoroughly, find ways to improve it, and come out with a highly competitive chip in the future (whether it's K8L, or something else). Whether it's "better" than the Intel equivalent can be left for users to decide. But please, enough of the blind "AMD r0x0rs, die Intel". Please. - Harbinger67, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@tidu
Yeah, but the jump from 2x512kb cache to 2x1meg is a big jump as well. Once the 5200 isnt the top model anymore, it'll be well worth whatever the price gap is. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That motherboard is perfectly fine, just not a great overclocker. Not all of us are rich snobs.

And I suppose an average rating of "5 out of 5" on newegg means it's a piece of junk. Grow up. - JayRod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If AMD quietly released the new chips then it's because the Conroes are probably better than AMD's current processors. AMD is probably saying look we got something new, but it's nothing to brag about.
- s7r1k3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No way, Amd and ATi are leaders when it comes to pc gaming and graphics. This is the reason why both xbox and nintendo have ati chips which is a major blow to nvidia.
- weeFred, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Crazy ass scottish lingo. Scottish people rarely talk like this. He's playing his scottishness, can't see why though.

This motherboard is Core 2 Duo/Conroe compatible and under $60. - returnofmalv, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8The conroes have a better performance/cost ratio, but the motherboards are almost twice as much as AMD 939/AM2 boards.
- loudnobnoxious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The price cuts haven't done Intel any good and they are way down from where they were last year while AMD is doing substantially better. AMD isn't losing ANYTHING in the midst of all this, but gaining.
- briguyd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't think so, at least not in the very near future. If they had something, they would announce it in order to restore faith in the consumers. However their silence seems to make me think that they are scrambling to throw something better together and not having much success.
- Black913Hole, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2You have to go to one of the links in the Enquirer article, which takes you to the site, which is conveniantly in Korean i think, that informs of the new processors.
- ZennZero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I think you mean an "American English" dictionary. Most of the Inq staff are slang-sloshing Brits.

4800 is 2x1024kb - nomojunkscience, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0being a fan-boy for any brand is stupid, I've switched from nvidia to ati and back and same thing with amd and intel. The only thing i'm rooting for is my wallet so I'm glad the competition is fierce.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5I'm not sure how well AMD will do, even with the acquisition of ATi and their attempt to capture the low end market. AMD and ATi are two companies that fall behind Intel and NViDiA respectively.
- cowardlydragon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0nTensify is dead wrong, at least not for another month or so
existing 775/LGA mobo support of Conroe is very spotty. The BIOS updates are trickling in, but to state with confidence that _any_ LGA775 can supporty Core 2 with a bios update is wrong.
Plus, he said "drop in the Core and flash the BIOS" - this proves he has no clue. You don't drop in a potentially unsupported processor and then try to flash your BIOS - because your machine won't be able to function with an unsupported processor, so you can't flash your BIOS.
Core 2 support will be coming, but you'll have to watch your mobo manufacturer's sites and read carefully. - vetipc, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3And twice as bad... really the mobo manufacturers are trying to rape my wallet.
- stone2020, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1"Can we just admit that the Core 2 micro-architecture Intel has released is a significant advance CPU technology wise?"
Could Intel Fanboys admit that AMD has made better CPU's the last 2 or 3 years? What makes you think AMD Fanboys are going to admit it anytime soon. - fluffyturtle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Yes it is called K8L and will be demoed this year, on sale in the second half of 07. Although they will have 65nm soon and quad core k8's (rev. G) will show up soon (the quad core is only for servers).
65nm will help them a bunch since they can already compete power usage wise but it won't be the answer that K8L will. AMD will just have to sit tight for a ~year. - compbuilder00, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2AMD has something up their sleeve............. I have a hunch
- aximbigfan, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2yeah. ya know, im an amd fan and all, but at this time they are getting wuped by intel. i just moved from a duron to a p4 northwood with 512kb of l2..
chris - JDelta, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0amd = mac
intel = windows
just a comparison how popular these products are. - mlock2k, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Something tells me that AMD will bust out some counter chips soon.
- zeras, on 10/12/2007, -14/+0Need asian help as all ways lol!
ahhh AMD is going to be back and with a vengance!
This is the will/power of the never ending monster
CPUs of AMD!
for the last 10 months, AMD 939/AM2 chipsets own3d
all the sales from newegg, zimzoomfly, tigerdirect, etc. etc...
Now that Intel is back on the plate still not selling as much, but
does own the benchmarks, but still AMD was not gonna quite,
they are the 2nd largest CPUs maker (now some GPUs work on ATi tech.) - MrViklund, on 10/12/2007, -26/+10AMD will crush Intel :)
- davidirock, on 10/12/2007, -31/+10It's about how amd is kicking intels butt. Ok thats just my oppinion, but the article says basicaly what the tital says, amd releaced new stuff.
