Either way there is no way your Core 2 or w/e is ever gonna run anywhere close to 500 GHz

Whomever wrote the linked article had no idea what they were talking about. The following press release makes it clear that it was individual transistors reaching speeds of 500 GHz:

And no, just because transistors exist with f_T's near the terahertz level, it doesn't mean that chips will be getting there anytime soon. Not only is the power consumption tremendous, but it would also require a completely different chip architecture. Whenever you're dealing with signals with a wavelength approaching that of the length scales in your system, the usual circuit model breaks down, and you need to start thinking about signals as propagating waves.
As a rule of thumb, you have to start worrying when your wavelength is ten times the largest distance. For a chip 2 mm across, this is about 15 GHz. This is one reason why the big chip manufacturers have begun to pursue multi-core processors in lieu of higher clock rates. - 2ach, on 01/25/2009, -0/+47Only at 640X480

- radu79, on 01/25/2009, -3/+25Actually, the heatsink touches the CPU, which means that the CPU itself will be cooled down to that temperature. Which is why such speeds can be reached (materials becoming superconductors and fancy physics like that happening).
