- AmishRefugee, on 10/12/2007, -13/+101and Manchester United will kick both of their asses.
wait, what are we talking about? - nuclearpenguins, on 10/12/2007, -5/+76It's good to see AMD get back in the fight.
- colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -4/+35"Hahaha, I feel so sorry for some people I know that didn't take my advice to get an am2 amd processor for christmas XD."
Why? Those chips are still slower than the Cores. - lazydrumhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30without the "AMD:," this would have been the strangest story title of all time
- BitSlash, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23i guess he means by getting the am2 proc you are also getting the am2 socket motherboard? *shrug*
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19The problem is, they're comparing today's technology with something they'll have in 6+ months. Intel is not going to be asleep at the wheel either. Penryn (and it's quad core version Harpertown), 45nm shrinks of this current generation are due out in line with Barcelona, and have recently been reported as taped out and running Windows (a very good sign that we're about to see the chip publicly). On top of this, the current Core architecture can go a lot further on air cooling alone; Intel can just ramp the clock to deal with any offset in time they'll have between announcement of manufacturing and shipping Penryn.
Let's just end with this: Intel didn't brag about how much faster the Core architecture was until it was released. It was everyone who reviewed the Core architecture who's brain exploded when they saw the performance numbers of Conroe. Until my brain explodes from seeing Barcelona's performance, I'm not amused by "oh yeah, well ours is faster" rhetoric. - rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Won't you take me to... Clovertown!
- lacronicus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14cough sarcasm /cough
- kz26, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Intel: Our Core Duos rock.
AMD: Well, our Barcelona will kick your @ss. - Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10We are not impressed with your sorcerous wares, Lord Vapor.
- scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Maybe you spent the last few months in a coma, but intel isn't the one needing to keep up.
- crgnetworks, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14The Cell is a ***** processor that's REALLY good at one or two things. It's not even best suited as a game processor... Read the facts and you will see.
Realize numbers aren't everything. That's why the 360 has such an edge in the graphics department. - Wireddd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I would take a quad core processor over a single core processor with some dsp's grafted too it any day.
- Electric_Sheep, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10@colincornaby
Perhaps he meant that that motherboards would be compatable with the next generation of chips and sockets by AMD?
*bows to BitSlash - 3 seconds before me. +digg - leetphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I do believe Barcelona is a server chip.
As stated on TheInquirer: "Barcelona will be AMD's first 65nm server chip."
Thus it being compared to a Xeon. - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8You do realize that the Core architecture has already proven itself to be very dependent on its clockspeed for performance (just as the old P6 architecture was previously). The new process gives them the ability to drive the clock faster, and reduce power consumption, which are the two goals that are needed to be met to increase the performance of the chip. All they need to do is run up the clock and AMD is still trailing behind them.
This isn't to say they're not innovating either. Intel's NGMA2 (aka Core Marchitecture version 2 [CM2]) will be their first architecture native to 45nm, with Nehalem being the Conroe of its architecture. We likely won't see the same 40% leap that we saw with Netburst->Core, but it should still be quite the sight.
It's just good to see AMD's not totally behind the times. - Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7My vaporware beats your vaporware.
- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11From the article:
According to them,..."
Thanks for the marketing update, but to be fair to Intel, this is just a bunch of sales-speak.
And for this, you have earned the scarlet letters I-N-A-C-C-U-R-A-T-E. - invader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"It's good to see AMD get back in the fight."
I've used nothing but AMDs for about a decade. However, even though I like them, I'm not going to put too much faith into what they say until they hit production. AMD took a beating with the Core release and I'm eager to see them take back the crown, but press releases don't help me get my work done faster.
I'll believe it when I see it. What is this? Skeptic fanboyism or something? - colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Core Duo is dual core consumer chip. Barcelona is quad core pro chip. AMD better hope they are faster than the new Xeon's coming down the line.
- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Only until the 45nm chips are out...those are going to be very fast and even more overclockable.
- ezweave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6If you mean more expensive... yes.
Historically Intel has been more expensive than AMD. Unless you don't realize that the only Core 2 Quad you can get now is about $900. - grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5.... and 10 months later Intel will release something that clobers Barcelona. Right now it is just vapour. I don't want to wait 10 months for something that competes. Get me something today that at least matches it.
- emehrkay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I cant wait to see what they'll do when they integrate ati chipsets
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I seriously thought this was the title of a football match for a second. I actually didn't know there was a processor line know as the Clovertown...
- aserer511, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I agree with those who are skeptical because these are from their mouths....I'm an AMD fanboy, but hat ethe fact that now, an FX62 is stomped on by an intel chip that's not only cheaper but more mainstream...you don't need a c2duo extreme, to say the least, to shut out an FX62. I just hope AMD keeps the architecture heat efficient, and doesn't make a built in ceramic heater...
- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -12/+15cannot defeat the CELL !!!!!11one
- digdugsmug, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4AMD does the same thing (maybe not as often as Intel) remember the later Athlon XP processors? They were long due for a new platform.
- Mysk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I like AMD, really I do, but "blah blah blah".
We'll see. Good for them if they're right.
~Mysk - jhaitas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2***** MANCHESTER UNITED
- crgnetworks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@lacronicus
With Diggs mentality, I'd be surprised if it was sarcasm.... - sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You cant necessarily just keep the same mobo cuz the sockets are the same....
These days you will need a chipset to support the cpu regardless of the socket. - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Does anyone know the exact release date for this?"
You'll know when AMD knows. - deathguppie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I still say that there is something going on with AMD. People keep going on about faster clock speeds and power consumption.. but if AMD can bring their core speeds even close to par with Intel, their higher bus speeds and memory performance will still make a very formidable system indeed.
- acff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4 just assumed that clovertown was some second-rate irish football club
- Pataflafla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Clobbering Clovertown" would make a great band name.
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1AMD still has the best price/performance chips. They just launched the X2 3600+, and it's priced near $100. It's 30% cheaper than the cheapest C2D, and performs similarly. It's even roughly the same price as Intel's left-over Pentium Ds, but it doesn't suck.
- truck87bp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My current chip is Intel running XP, but because of all bad stuff flying around Vista and DRM, I need to be careful.
In about 5 or 6 months, when the dust settles, I will probably be buying an AMD because they support Linux better than Intel. I feel that I need to leave my Future options open to Operating Systems (not just hardware) now and don't want to take the chance of wasting my money on the wrong hardware.
P.S. Intel and windows is all I've ever used. Patiently waiting. - bdbr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Let's not forget, its a lot easier to announce hot products than produce them.
- geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"but also come out ahead of Intel's Xeon 5300 series. "
I have a few 5300 series systems. I welcome AMD making faster CPUs, if it's true I'll buy plenty of them. - Aiwanei, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@sishgupta Exactly! People need to learn that Same Socket != compatibility these days. If you buy one of the older LGA775's tough luck getting a core 2 duo to run on it. Same with socket 939 X2's on a first or second gen socket 939 mobo.
- Darksoul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I knew this was going to happen everybody was so fast to switch back to Intel even though amd has been giving us what we wanted faster better and cheaper then what Intel was doing for what 5 years, and its been barely a year since core 2 duo was released and in 3 months we get a new amd chip better then core 2 duo and anybody doubting them I doubt amd would lie make a statement like that and not have the processor to back it up.
- Stevethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -12/+12Neither is he following chips, apparently he's following soccer teams. BTW Barcelona kicks Man United sorry ass
- SystmBetatester, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3i absolutely cant wait for this chip to come out, ive been waiting ever since i got my first dual core, i wonder if the speed increase will feel like it did when i went from single to dual... only time will tell!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I say lets all wait till the chips hit the reviewers and we see real numbers. I hope AMD does school Intel that means Intel will have the motivation to do better.
- t-readyroc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If the numbers play out like they say it will, it only means good things for us, the consumers. More competition = more aggressive pricing = we win. I just hope they deliver. If the Inq gets their release date right (& they usually do), we'll see Barcelona chips by end of 2Q:
http://theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=37212 - jhaitas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Stand up... If you hate Man U Stand Up...
***** MAN U... ARSENAL OWNS YOU
YOU'RE NOT SINGING ANYMORE - Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, looks like someone woke up at AMD. If its true, AMD might limp back into the race. I won't say AMD will take the crown with ONE faster chip, and AMD is in a position where they really need to come out with new and better architecutre, but for now Intel created a pretty nice product in the Core 2 which will see Intel keeping up with whatever AMD comes out with for a long time. AMD's current architecture is mature and nearing end of life, Core 2 is still fresh and new.
- rmccs0x, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1i thought this was about soccer. ha
- thebenchase, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2the barcelona chips will be on the AM2 platform, so if you bought, say, an AM2 4200+, like me, you can up grade to the barcelona quad core without changing your motherboard.
