- inactive, on 07/14/2008, -4/+48ATi is back!
- encrypter, on 07/14/2008, -0/+25More geeky articles like this on Digg plz :)
- Fmunkey, on 07/14/2008, -3/+27Dang, crysis very high, and 20fps average at 1900x1200, Lower it to 1650x1080 and im pretty sure you'd be able to play at great frame rates.
Makes me wish i had money... - inactive, on 07/14/2008, -3/+23GG Nvidia. You just lost this round.
- lordblue, on 07/14/2008, -2/+21DDR5 is the future. Forget DDR3. Don't even bother with 4.
- Cadenzah, on 07/14/2008, -1/+16I really hope ATi catches up with Nvidia, we don't want a Microsoft situation on the video card market...
- snowysnowcones, on 07/14/2008, -6/+20Mops the floor with the GTX280
- Stryder2720, on 07/14/2008, -3/+15It's a beast! Thanks for the great review [H]
- acevoncash, on 07/14/2008, -2/+13don't sleep nvidea. don't sleep.
are you watching, intel? - oMeSSiaHo, on 07/14/2008, -0/+10The Core2s are fantastic but there is nothing wrong with wanting something better.
- falloutsyndrome, on 07/14/2008, -0/+10Finally. It looks like they're getting their ***** together. Now let's see AMD make a core 2 Killer
- Evilblobs, on 07/14/2008, -0/+9Any 'enthusiast' level card made in the last three years, and just about any card since the 8800 series will run it maxxed out at 2560
thats why they dont bench it anymore.. - goitalone, on 07/14/2008, -2/+11This will be my card the very SECOND I see it on Newegg! I believe it MAY be released to online etailers even sooner than August...keep an eye open ;)
- inactive, on 07/14/2008, -1/+10It even mops the floor with 2 GTX280s in SLI according to the anandtech preview.
- GorfTron, on 07/14/2008, -2/+10And DDR2 is RIGHT OUT.
- BlackOp, on 07/15/2008, -0/+7It has an x in it so it must be better.
- iofthestorm, on 07/15/2008, -0/+7Catches up? They've blown nVidia away this round.
- Chalks777, on 07/14/2008, -1/+8Why did they use the 8.5 drivers? 8.6 is available already:
http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx
I'm using it for my 3870, and I'm fairly certain that it's for both the 38xx and 48xx lines. - breaks, on 07/14/2008, -2/+9great review as always, [H].
can't wait to put one or two of these bad boys in my fall gaming rig. - Rudegar, on 07/14/2008, -0/+6way to go ati
- mohsenxp, on 07/14/2008, -4/+10Makes me wish Crysis was actually worth the graphic card upgrade required to play it!
- somestranger26, on 07/14/2008, -0/+6Yes, less politics and more Apple-unrelated tech news on Digg would be nice, more the way it was to begin with.
- elon71, on 07/14/2008, -3/+9Looks like a great card!!!
- LMN8R, on 07/15/2008, -0/+6Seriously - I'm sick of this ***** ***** about Crysis "needing" such powerful hardware to play it, and "not being worth" playing in the first place.
First of all, you don't need to play it at Very High for an incredible visual experience. At High settings, even with some set to Medium, it absolutely, hands-down blows away every bit of the competition by an extremely significant margin.
With everything set to High, it was fully playable at High details and 1680x1050 on a computer you could build from scratch - including OS - for less than $900 last year. - Chalks777, on 07/14/2008, -0/+5Try Riva Tuner. You can manually change fan settings which for some reason CCC doesn't allow.
http://www.guru3d.com/index.php?page=rivatuner - inactive, on 07/14/2008, -1/+6Glad to see you back ATI, we missed you! nVidia, seriously guys! You cant release a 280 at $700 that runs equal to a $300 4870 its just not good!
- 0mega, on 07/14/2008, -1/+5An ATi card. The first since the x800 XL to catch my eye. GG ATi. Now step it up nV. Thanks [H] :D
- oMeSSiaHo, on 07/14/2008, -1/+5I have a 4870 and can play Crysis at 1680x1050 with everything at high without any skipping. Its really a fantastic card, especially for the price. My only complaint is how hot it can get. I'm hoping that when AMD releases drivers for it (the card actually didnt come with any, but there is a hotfix) the fan issue will be taken care of. Its good to see ATI back in the game and forcing Nvidia's prices down.
- Smills, on 07/15/2008, -1/+5A single 4870X2 mops the floor with the GTX 280 in all games but Crysis and over-all it seems to tie with the GTX 280 in Crysis performance (look at the other reviews). In some cases a single 4870X2 can beat two GTX 280's. The number of GPU's is not relevent, ATI is going the multi-GPU way and Nvidia is going the single GPU way.
A 4870X2 (two GPU's) works out to be around the same price as a GTX 280 (one GPU) yet it beats it in performance. Price to performance ratio is what matters, not the number of GPUs. - ExRe, on 07/14/2008, -0/+4Crysis isn't really as bad as they make it sound on your PC.
I played it fine for the most part at 1920x1200 with medium settings on my 8800 GS ($65 card). Most of the time the frame rate was probably around 30fps.
At very high I got like 2-3fps though...but even at medium it looks better than most games. - RizenBB, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4Buy a modern case.
- ExRe, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3A Core 2 killer wouldn't be enough.
Intel's next generation would mop the floor with it. They need something close to 50% faster than the Core 2 at the same speed to really take back the market. - inactive, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3Yup. Once these bad boy ATI cards lower in price I'll be purchasing one myself.
- Evilblobs, on 07/14/2008, -1/+4nothing exclusive about it, other hardware reviewers, such as anandtech, got early previews.
Anyways, glad ill be able to put an ATI card into my next build.
edit: also, nvidia has done nothing but fail since the 8800GT - ExRe, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3Like Evilblobs said, my 8800 GS which costs $65 now could max it out. It will hit the cpu limits far before it hits a gpu limit.
- Coopdoggie, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3I just purchased two ATI Radeon HD 4870 for crossfire and I love these cards,my first upgrade since my X1600.
I love ATI and with this generation they have a real awesome chance to dominate Nvidia. - trollick, on 07/14/2008, -3/+6Dugg down for boring non-childish comments.
- Hiltonizer, on 07/14/2008, -1/+4sick card... and another great [H] article....
gonna have to look into getting one of these bad boys. - PATSCRU, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3but the difference is that you paid $200-300 more for your card...ouch.
- Psythik, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2So can my 4850 with a slight OC. I can even turn shaders to Very High (everything else on high) and it's still very playable at 1680x1050. It might be because I'm running in 64-bit, or that my e8400 is OC'd to 3.6GHz, though...
- Psythik, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2RivaTuner can't control the 4800 series fan speeds yet, but this will:
http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=14111 - Scrappy1850, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2invest in good headphones
- AceGoober, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1There is no doubt in my mind, I am definitely getting one of these cards for my primary system. It will handle every game I play with ease.
- slayernine, on 07/14/2008, -1/+2I would suggest downloading an overclocking+fan control program such as RivaTuner which I use on my 8800 gt to keep it running fast and cool. Not sure what the ATI equivalent is.
- killdeer03, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1i could not agree with you more....
- Commodore13, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1I don't mean to be offensive. But if you "could not agree with him more", then just digg him.
- Evilblobs, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1the GTX is damn long.
GTS and GT are a bit better - RizenBB, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1The cost of the 4870X2 is in line with a single 280, don't compare based on GPU compare based on price...
- RizenBB, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1What obvious bias? If you haven't noticed they pimped the 8800-series for quite a long, long time. ATI has legitimately made a turn-around with the current generation of cards and even if you personally choose NVIDIA, you will be paying much less than you would have if ATI hadn't forced NVIDIA's hand on the pricing scheme ***** they were pulling.
Giving ATI kudos at this point is 100% deserved. -
