- romistrub, on 07/05/2008, -4/+165Hold on... how does one go about computing the "HDD space" of your brain? They are fundamentally different mechanisms of storage. I'm going stash that little tidbit in "marketing speak" for now.
EDIT: If each "fact" is stored as a series of connections in your brain (and I think it could be vaguely described as so), then I guess it would just be the number of possible pathways, which would be a permutation operation that depends on the coordination number of brain cells, and the number of brain cells that are used for "memory". Something along the lines of "{number of inputs} * {coordination number}^{average path length}"... I think (too hard). - ericdano, on 07/05/2008, -5/+137pron.........endless......pron...........

- palehorse864, on 07/05/2008, -3/+103Please, everyone knows that the brain can only store 160 gigabytes safely, and that's with a memory doubler. If you're willing to risk death, you can fit 320gigabytes for a day or two, but you have to dump your childhood memories.
- tomd123, on 07/05/2008, -4/+84It's a pretty bold statement about your brain capacity... especially if still don't know how the brain exactly functions... bad hitachi marketing statement. Why can't they just stick to, holds a billion songs*
*hitachi does not promote pirating. - yourbrokenoven, on 07/05/2008, -15/+95it's not a dot. it's a folded corner.
- unknwn, on 07/05/2008, -2/+78If they claim it can hold more than our brain, does that mean we won't be able to remember everything we put on it??
- nicku, on 07/05/2008, -6/+75640k is probably enough space to store the content of Bush's brain.
- aphexcoil, on 07/05/2008, -3/+68Yeah, that's what it will say on the box. Then you format it, bring up file explorer and notice you only have 4.3 terabytes of usable storage.
- mrsteveman1, on 07/06/2008, -0/+55Actually a metric assload (MA) is 2.4TB.

just cause i just read that story - KaiUno, on 07/05/2008, -6/+53Why do you hate Vista? Haven't you heard, it's no longer hip to hate it. We're in the "meh" fase now, the one where nobody cares one way or the other. We'll all be happy Vista users in about a year or so. (And rightfully so, it's not that bad of an OS. See what I did there? I'm ahead of the curve, I'm actually a trend setter!)
- orangederange, on 07/05/2008, -5/+525 Terabyte? wow!
- inactive, on 07/06/2008, -0/+39Well, technically, 5TB in common terms is 5 tera bytes, which is 5,000,000,000,000 bytes, In this counting method, 1 KB = 1000 bytes
But the thing is, in real world computing, 1 KB = 1024 bytes, so 5TB will show up as 4.65TB in your computer. - orgazmo, on 07/05/2008, -0/+38This just in: HDD's size increases with time

it seemed like science fiction, today we have 1 TB HD with better speeds, and smaller form factors, if they say in 2 years there will be 3.5" faster 5TB HD you better believe them - Vector713, on 07/06/2008, -0/+32[citation needed]

I think he means higher data density at the same speed = faster performance which is not always true. Depends on how fast the read/write heads access the data. - aphexcoil, on 07/06/2008, -0/+305 Terabytes of Storage:
Over 7,100 movies compressed with DivX (assuming 700megs a movie)
Over 750,000 high-quality MP3's (basically the top 50,000 albums of all time could be stored)
Over 5,000 minutes of ULTRA-HIGH resolution video at 1 gig/minute compression
and get this ... over 972 days worth of continuous video compressed with divX ....

- aphexcoil, on 07/05/2008, -0/+24The human brain has a peak processing capability of 10 to the 14'th operations per second and a total storage capacity of between 500 terabytes and 1 petabyte.
The brain holds A LOT more than 10 terabytes of information. - vpshockwave, on 07/05/2008, -4/+26And the logic behind your conclusion is....?
- aphexcoil, on 07/06/2008, -0/+21http://www.transhumanist.com/volume1/moravec.htm
There are a lot of sources on Google -- but the general consensus is 10^14 operations per second. I've seen as low as 10^12 and as high as 10^16 based on various criteria so I went with middle of the road.
Also, what's quite amazing is that all that power is fed with just 30 watts of power. I'd like to see Intel try that one in the next 10 years (space, power, speed). - Rudegar, on 07/06/2008, -0/+21defrag will take a year :S
