- maad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The ReadyNAS from Infrant is presently the king of this particular market of devices, but it's still a little on the pricey side for home users like myself. I'd consider it better than Iomega's offering, but it's still good to see Infrant getting some competitors.. Hopefully the prices will come down soon.
Having a simple, *non-spare-PC-based*, plug n' play, RAID NAS is something a lot of people such as myself have been waiting a long time for. It looks like the market is finally starting to heat up. - Lostcosmos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4FreeNAS + Old PC + WiFi PCI card + Fun + Hard drives = $400ish 1TB NAS.
- JohnboiWaltune, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Plus your time to assemble and test it... also not everyone has an old PC and a wifi card sitting around. Even if you do have an old PC, the power supply is not likely to be able to handle 4 hard drives. You need at least a 400-450Watt power supply, and a good Antec will cost you upwards of 60 bucks. Also many older PCs don't have 4 internal 3.5" bays, and they usually don't have 4 SATA connectors, so you'd be stuck with PATA. Older PCs usualy only have 4 PATA ports so you wouldn't be able to have an optical drive.
So most people would have to buy a case, newer mainboard (a lot of them have SATA2 RAID 5 controllers now) power supply, and wifi card. I would say most people couldn't put together a 1TB RAID 5 server with wifi for less than $650.
If you're wealthy enough, the $250 extra for this Iomega NAS box might be worth the convenience factor, and the reliability of a turnkey solution. - JohnboiWaltune, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3With 750GB hard drives on the horizon, I'd like to know if you can put in larger hard drives when they come down in price.
- kimbermatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I use the Infrant is with 2 TB(1.5 available). Very nice and works well. I have my printer hooked off of it. A little pricey, but cutting edge NAS for the home, what do you expect.
- Nighthawke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I don't feel comfortable with Iomega's server grade products for they don't have the track record of the likes that Compaq/HP, or even Adaptec/Snap NAS appliances.
After their Zip drives, they have not had a outstanding product since then. - JohnboiWaltune, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You cant do RAID 5 with only 2 drives. Anyway, you can get 4 300GB drives for $110 each, that's cheaper than 2 500GB's, and you get 200GB more space.
- adinb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm using the Infrant ReadyNAS as well. It *just works*. I've had to reset it twice since installing it--both resets were for voluntary firmware upgrades.
AFS/NFS/Samba/HTML/FTP/SHTML with Gigabit, SATA, Printer Share, UPS support, auto status notification and RAID 0--->RAID 5 scalability for only $599 ( drives)? A bargain.
And then comes the peace of mind from not worrying that a single drive outage will cause you to lose your "digital life". - dekkerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have enough PATA drives laying around, I just want the case. If Iomega or Buffalo would offer a barebones like Infrant, I'd be all set.
- dognose, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Uhm, yeah, you only need two drives right now. 2 x 500Gb @ $230 each.
- glitch47, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2
by the way, for the USB ports-- NTFS USB drives connected are read-only. fat-32 are read/write. just in case that matters to you... - GoodBrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Johnboi. While I agree with the general gist of your post, I don't think anyone is going to need a 400W power supply to run 4 HDD. Each one might draw 20W peak, and probably closer to 10.
- pHr34kY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why do companies insist on making a NAS that's wireless? How many people actually pick these up and walk around with them?
You gotta plug it in to power it, you may as well plug it in next to your router and hardwire it!
If you needed 1TB of space, you'd want it to be quick. I don't think wireless is a good idea. I'm sure it's got a RJ45 socket on the back, but I still don't see why anyone would pay extra for wireless capabilities on such a product.
I'd personally use a NAS for storing DVDs, wireless wouldn't be able to stream at a high enough bitrate to watch them... stupid gimmicks. - FunkyGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I just want the case, not the harddrives, let me spend the money on the best deal I can find on harddrives and not on the case...id be willing to pay 100-200 for case....
- olearyttu, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4The gigabit ethernet makes this NAS very practical, but the 802.11g should be seen for what it is......a gimmick.
- brian2k1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is tech news. I have been trying to find a good NAS for my small business. basically what I need is a 500gb (mirrored) drive with a 10/100/1000 ethernet. Buffalo makes two but the reviews on it are not good. YellowBox or something like that makes one, and it has good reviews BUT they thought it would be a good idea to just use a 10/100 ethernet connection. Who needs 1000mpbs? we do!
This thing seems good so I'm eager to read some reviews. If anyone knows of a good NAS with my specs or an inexpensive case that I can put drives in please reply. - JohnboiWaltune, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I wouldn't need the built in wireless, I'd just plug it into my wireless router. However it is difficult to stream high bitrate DivX/XviD over 802.11b and that might be a factor for some ppl.
- brandonking, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I think the g part is a bunch of bunk, but I'm wondering if this can be used simultaneously with the USB ports. It would be nice for HTPCs, since that way you could access the files whether the PC was on or not (or you could drop the cash for a gigabit switch and have another piece of hardware stacked up by the TV). Tom's HW did a thing on a couple gigabit NAS solutions and Iomega's other, non-wireless version did pretty well for the price. I have a 250GB Iomega and 3 other externals, though, and the Iomega is louder than all the others combined (2 different WD, and a LaCie).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+11"If you are going to take up valuable digital space by flaming somebody, at least wait until your facts are right. Or is that too much to ask?"
Who said I was flaming anyone? Digitalgopher submitted the story, and then Kevin put the article in the front page queue with 2 diggs (one being his). That was just my rendition of the submission as it went down (which occurs freqently).
If you don't believe me, add KevinRose to your friend list and then look at his article queue. You'll see the articles nominated for the front page before they get there. - Vector713, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1very cool. very useful for large corporations i'd imagine
- JohnboiWaltune, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@GoodBrain
On startup, hard disks draw a lot more than 20W - Goosemaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The problem with most of these is the transfer speeds are atrocious. Toms ( I know I know) actually did a legit review on small NAS devices and there were indeed some good performers, but they weren't from the major manu.'s
In fact, the major manufactures had the worst results (Netgear, Buffalo etc...)
Either way, it is so much easier to make a NAS on your own. Hell, buy a 2u or 4u case and go to school.
Oh, and having a wireless NAS is just idiotic. Wired or bust. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'd rather be a correct pariah than a loved sheep anyway.
- lonelycanuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I want this so bad.
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3hackjandy if you dont like digg, can you please leave, there will be many of us only all so glad to see you go
im fairly sick of you running around acussing and flaming everyone, hell you even submitted an article about how the creater of http://www.hardocp.com/ was using lots of bots to digg his article, you also flamed them in many comment threads, god knows what you have also done, but now you are doing this
please, just leave - glitch47, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0
adinb,
just curious-- does the Infrant read/write NTFS drives from the USB connection? - goldenbb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I've been burned by Iomega too many times in the past. The worst was when I bought a tape backup drive that became obsolete and the newer versions would not read my tapes. Zip drives were kind of cool, though. Jaz drives sucked. CD-R killed both.
Infrant's NAS products are far better. - scbysnx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1the wireless part is pretty useless and should be taken out to make room for a 5th hard drive. Anyone storing a terabyte of info should NOT run the NAS without raid 5 it would just be dumb
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2"hell you even submitted an article about how the creater of http://www.hardocp.com/ was using lots of bots to digg his article"
You got your facts wrong there. They wrote an article about me and submitted it to digg, then used their sock puppets to put it on the front page. The story is burried, but still viewable here:

SOMEBODY has to be the second digger. This time it just HAPPENED to be Kevin. - firemillen2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Why the hate for HackJandy? He's pointing out an obvious problem that's developing w/ DIGG. It's become a tool for the site creator (KEVIN) to promote his advertisers.
DON'T YOU FREAKIN' TECHNERDS GIVE A CRAP ABOUT OBJECTIVE NEWS? YOU IDIOTS CAN BE SO EASILY PAWNED... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3"And no, "I was just joking" doesn't cover your ass."
I wasn't joking. By the way check out my comment history if you think I haven't shown proof to back these things up.

"By the way check out my comment history if you think I haven't shown proof to back these things up."
~ I ~ checked out the comment/allegation you made at the top of THIS story. You were ***** wrong. PERIOD.
"Uh? For what?"
I already told you. Ignore it at your own peril, dude.
Good luck. - p9s50W5k4GUD2c6, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3@HackJandy
This is MY personal opinion.
At the time you posted your initial remark - this post had 20 - 25 diggs and it was most definitely NOT on the front page (I checked before I responded back to you).
I understand the context of your remarks in light of the recent controversy. I really do. I suspect the Digg Team does as well.
But when you become flippant about someone's passion/work (not to mention someone's personal integrity and business reputation) you better be prepared to back it up, sir - or be held accountable for your remarks. And no, "I was just joking" doesn't cover your ass.
If you think I am off the mark here - I suggest you consult legal counsel to get your own opinion on this matter.
Again - my personal opinion. - p9s50W5k4GUD2c6, on 10/12/2007, -13/+7@HackJandy
What in the ***** are you talking about?
If you are going to take up valuable digital space by flaming somebody, at least wait until your facts are right. Or is that too much to ask? - digitalgopher, on 10/12/2007, -15/+9hackjandy - are you lame or what? get a life.
oh and welcome to my block users list, jackass. - eatmorgnome, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Internet Nerd Fight!!!
p9s50W5k4GUD2c6 already used the words "flippant" and "peril" in a serious manner and played the "you gonna get sued sucka!" card. Woo, this is gonna be fun.
I'll bring the Dew. Someone needs to cover the pizza and Fritos. - brandonking, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1Hack is Oack Jff.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -46/+18DigitalGopher: Hey Kevin check this out I found a cool press release
Kevin: Neat submit it, traffic is low on the front page today
DigitalGopher: Done
Kevin: Front-pagified. Hey tell some friends of yours to digg this so it doesnt look like I just put an article in the queue with 2 diggs.
