- harmlessinc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35Nice to know there are at least 21 people out there who modded me down before reading the link, plus Burtonownz and titlesaysitall. Just for them I'll do this one slowly.
From the linked page:
"...chromium covered Monstor and Dragon Drives stretch upwards to 120 gigabytes."
There are 2 different products being talked about.... now going over to the actual product pages from US Modular:
http://www.usmodular.com/
We have the Monster Drive:
http://www.usmodular.com/MCE/default//product/2263
Which comes in 2, 4, and 8 gigs and is the nice shiney one you have pictured back in the original link.
And the Dragon Drive:
http://www.usmodular.com/MCE/default//product/2261
Which is nothing more than a external case for a 2.5" notebook harddrive. And I quote:
"The Dragon Drive turns any 2.5" Hard Drive into a convenient portable storage drive that can be used on any system with a USB or Firewire port."
Idiots. - ferrell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8WRONG INFO - NO DIGG
1) The website shows a similar item, but only FLASH MEMORY in 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, etc... sizes. Nothing special about that
2) The SMALLEST device that stores 120GB is a 2.5" laptop drive.WD has a USB powered external drive http://www.t3online.cz/imagea/493_2.jpg - trecool95, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9looks like it only comes with up to 8gb
http://www.usmodular.com/MCE/default//product/2263 - heymark, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10... Not at all.
- vashrei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4see on thier home page
this is totally wrong...the maximum storage is 8GB
Undigg it...
Product: Monstor Drive
Features:
2GB, 4GB and 8GB high-capacity, high-performance USB Portable Pen Drive - ccanni1028, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No, the $399 is for the 8GB drive. The 120 drive is just a shell/enclosure for a laptop hard drive.
- jbenson2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No Digg - the story does not appy to the photo. The USB version in photo can only handle 8GB. Bad reporting.
- ProphetSix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Not only misleading, but OLD: November 9, 2005.
FFS, read the damned thing before you post it here. - cybershoplifter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6old
- yensed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I've seen 2.5 enclosures that don't require anything but a usb cord to power it. Infact, Almost bought one. But instead got a full size 250gb HDD on Black Friday and bought an enclosure(Its for home use, so thats perfect.)
- xunil2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Poster seems to have been confused. ferrell and others have noted same. The date on the article is November 2005, so this is old news.
- codyph55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3duuuup report as dupe this only goes to 8gigs
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2jzimmerman:
I also have an adapter which will let me attempt to power a 2.5" HD off a USB power.
Even when it works, it isn't within spec.
USB cannot within spec power a drive.
USB provides up to 2.5W of power at 5V. That's 0.5A at 5V.
Let's look at the specs for a 120GB drive:
http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/specs/ata/st9120821a.html
+5V START-UP (amps) - 1.0
It takes twice the power than the USB spec provides.
Like I said, this device is not within the USB spec. Expect compatibility to be less than 100%. - RandomPrecision, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I call shenanigans. Also from the site:
December 2, 2004 A new Australian research facility called the Visual Information Access Room (VIAR) is at the forefront of the coming revolution in human-digital interaction. The current keyboard, mouse and screen configuration will soon be replaced by digital interfaces that utilise touch, gesture and voice control and seek to integrate seamlessly into our environment. Launched by the National ICT Australia (NICTA), the Sydney laboratory looks like a futuristic office, but is in fact a test facility where sophisticated 3D models of complex systems and innovative ways to interact with complex data quickly will be developed.
Strange, everyone I know still has a keyboard/mouse setup. - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6A 120GB 2.5" drive in an enclosure? I've already got one. This is supposed to ship by the end of the year? Should I be excited?
2.5" HDs take more than the 2.5W provided by the USB spec. Compatibility with this device will be less than 100%. - kennyvader, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Same here, I have a 120gb USB drive made by Freecom that cost me approx 100 GBP all in, so you can probably get them in the US for around $75?
I don't see what the excitement in this story is! - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I don't want to carry around a mini hard drive, bulging in my pocket, everywhere."
LOL If only Mae West were here today!
[She would say: "Is that a harddrive in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?"] - aximbigfan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32.5inch 120gb hdd from local used-computer store $80
2.5inch usb 2.0 inclosure from tigerdirect $18
having 120gb of space in a pocket sized block of metal priceless - kennyvader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Probably 40gb or smaller. They tend to work just off one USB. 60gb and 80gb SOMETIMES work off one "powerful" USB port, usually on a desktop PC, but it's not recommended. 100gb and 120gb definitely won't work off one USB port.
Hence they usually come with a special cable with a second USB connector, so you can draw power from two USB ports on the same PC, or a power cable that piggybacks into the keyboard socket. - jzimmerman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@HappyScrappy
Actually a USB port can power a 2.5 inch hard drive.
I have a USB2IDE cable that I can plug into a standard HD or a 2.5 inch HD. I used this for data recovery on client computers.
The 2.5 inch HD does not require an external power source. It powers the HD right through the cable via USB.
Here is a link the the upgraded version of what I have that supports SATA as well.
http://usbgeek.com/prod_detail.php?prod_id=0383 - titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2How many RPMs is the HD? I might want one to store my iTunes library but it can't be slow.
- SoulMaster2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Man those are shiny.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Did they get the bits to be perpendicular?
http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/research/recording_head/pr/PerpendicularAnimation.html - electronicmaji, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2i got a smartdisk firelite
40 gb fits in the pocket but they have models up to 120 i think - jschunick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1is it solid state or moving parts?
- abbbllooooo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Looks like a Zippo lighter! When are they going to get into the flash memory trend? I'd buy on in a second as they wouldn't get squashed like all the crap one made of plastic!
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1as alex would say.. "sex."
man these are HOT - hedgehogman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1old news? but this is a new information for me
- harmlessinc, on 10/12/2007, -29/+29Inaccurate vs. just misleading?
The 120 drive is just a external case for a 2.5" laptop hard drive.
"US Modular's Dragon Drive is a 2.5" External Hard Drive Enclosure and is perfect for anyone needing a high capacity portable storage device." - bpcrao, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2good to hear that
- chickenlegs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1It's *not* a Flash drive, too pad it doesn't have a faster interface than usb
- Matrixsjd, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6yeah, but the iPod's actually use smaller form factor HD's which don't come in as high a capacity as laptop drives. I don't think the 80 gig drive that will fit into the iPod has been released yet, and with an iPod you get basically a computer in ur pocket, whereas this drive is just a drive, and can't do anything unless hooked up to a computer.
- PolishSausage, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I want now!
- HazardousFrk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Awswome story i want one lol
- DaMacGamer, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2that thing looks like if plugged it into a laptop and didn't have anything supporting it, that the usb part would break right off.
- tamborine, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0this tihng is over 5 month old
- scruffmaster, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Hallelujah!
- burtonownz, on 10/12/2007, -15/+8What are you talking about? I don't see anything about that.
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -17/+6Did you click the Google Ads again?
- j0c1f3r, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1AHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -19/+5looks nice and slick.
$100 for 120 gb? pretty nice. cheaper than that gb price rate of the ipod's!
now i can carry all my terrorist plans and have it secured in a safe area.
the feds wont find ***** on my pc/harddrive. =) - scoot87, on 10/12/2007, -17/+2So does the $99 price going to be for a 120 GB USB hard drive?
