- iCamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lay it all out on the bare carpet...nice. No potential problem with static there. :)
- EmmEff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This was done to show it's possible (and probably test Snapstream), not for something actually in use.
I'd like to see what happens to MythTV running on the same hardware. - PecanHead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Uh, if there are 11 things on TV that you want to watch at the same time... your standards are too low.
- beelz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0iam not sure but clean rig indeed
- bubba9999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
Yowsa. Is it even possible to have that many programs that you want to record at once?
I could almost see 3, but I'd have to have a cable/satellite box attached to each tuner. - SparQy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This would be a good setup for a dorm or an apartment complex... let other users connect using WiFi and the Snapstream media extender, make a few bucks on the side. :o)
- bigredgpk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow... I would kill for this rig (please let me kill for this rig!!!)
How about a AMD System and compare them.. I would love to see that!
Timmay - paulmetzger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I could buy 2, *maybe* three channels having something worth recording during the same timeslot... but 11?
- jacuff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0SnapStream Media Extender? Are you referring to BeyondTV Link? The fact that they don't have a media extender seems to be a common complaint by users and wannabes of SnapStream.
- RWVolkl158, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@fbiss RTA, he's using numerous HDs...
- D3THk4t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That is such a sweet case!
- gweedo767, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0While this is a cool concept, I have a dual tuner PVR and have not once run into problem. I guess I just don't watch as much tv as these guys ;)
- BigJuiceMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Excellent project! me likey the shopping list at the end. Now lets see here...where did the wife hide the credit card...
- CarlostheJackal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did I see someone say that "This would be good for a dorm or an apartment"? Did you look at the total cost bro? I think you could build your own satellite and launch it for less. Still I wish I had one :-)
- dargon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Get a few kids of differing ages, you'll quickly find them fighting over watch to watch. With this you could record it all and let them each watch their shows :D
- SparQy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BeyondTV Link, sorry, that's what I meant. But considering it all records in DiVX, it doesn't take much to run a front end. Too bad they don't extend the XBox Media Center project to connect to a Snapstream server a la MCE + MCX (Microsoft Media Center Extender)
- PlaidPhantom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"What could be beating in the belly of a beast like Godzilla but the best processor Intel makes?"
The best processor AMD makes? - KissTheRing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice wire management too
- SparQy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0CarlosTheJackal: 11 tuners means you can feed 11 (or more, based on laws of concurrent users) "subscribers" your TV. Say the cable package costs $45/mo... charge each $30/month x 10 users = $300/mo.
:o) Undoubtedly violates the terms of service, but hey, stick it to the MAN, right? - johnnyrotten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sadly, SnapStream does a crappy job with their software. It's buggy as hell and they seem to only have one development team who work on one product at a time. They have pretty much abandoned their Beyond Media users. All they need is a couple of people fixing bugs and testing new versions to keep hundreds of people happy, but instead they just ignore the product. It's really too bad, since their FireFly remote is nice, and their software is less kludgy than Girder.
- nullvector, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Say you record 11 shows at a time, during time "x".
That means you need 11(x) time units to watch all that content.
Say each show is an hour, and all 11 shows are at the same time a day. You would have to watch 11hrs of TV every day to keep up with that many tuners....
Basically you'd never watch all the content that 11 tuners would generate...I think 3-4 would be the most usable amount.. - RWVolkl158, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is one of those few places where Intel probably would rock AMD pretty hard. I would imagine a dual-core processor with hyper-threading would do very well in something like this, and Intel has typically had a lead in video stuff such as this. But, you never know... Nice system regardless
- ucffool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does anyone understand how those USB HD things work? Are they useful for a Mythtv application? does it output RF? very confused on it.
- phlll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I could buy 2, *maybe* three channels having something worth recording during the same timeslot... but 11? "
Word.
Still, kind of neat just as an exercise. - mattvirus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0he needs some watercooling..
- randallb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+011 tuners is nothing! Someone with MythTV should go beat that.
MythTV lets you have multiple backend machines, thereby eliminating the PCI card slot limit. You can network together a virtually unlimited number of boxes, each filled to the brim with TV cards! - randylovin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0RAID0 on the storage drives........FAIL.
- buck09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0More tuners = more p0rn.
1 Tuner Per Kink. - Wolfie351, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can record 11 programs at once, but they offer no way of organizing your shows into catagories for easy navigation. Imagine having to scroll through 200 recorded shows to find the one you want to watch. You'll do more scrolling than watching. Very cool, but I'll keep my ReplayTV
- Brak710101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 It would have been better if it was a rackmount server-like "home center" where you could have 11 TVs in the house all running off one box in your basement. Then maybe send the video over a dedicated Gigabit network to a small digital ethernet to coaxial adapter/cleint into the TVs. Almost like a home On-Demand center.
- w3weasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+011 tuners at an average of (a very conservative) 1.5 GB/Hour each = 16 total GB/hour.
that's ~ 275 MB per minute throughput... impressive when kept up for hour upon hour use.
My system uses three tuners... which are rarely all put to use because there is just not that much good programming. I use SageTV because i love the adaptive recording, where, like TiVo, it assumes that if i watch a lot of Star Trek, I might like other SciFi that I haven't specifically told it to record.
Wolfie 351, like your ReplayTV or TiVo.. the softwares Sage, Beyond, Myth, et al, will categorize your recordings based on keywords found in the programming guide... sort your list by alphabetical, most recent, or genre
This system is a marketing gimmick, and 11 tuners are neat, but 2 are sufficient for most users, over 4 is probably overkill. If you ever build one of these (which i highly recommend), the real challenge is getting enough disk space... you will never ever have enough (6 drives for me and looking for ways to add more). 3 tuners keeps my terabyte constantly full.
What will impress me is the first store bought unit to include 2 terabytes, 3+ tuners and NO DRM for under $1200 U.S. - liryon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is blow out of porportion. The 4 HDTV tunners are actually external USB devices if you look at their parts list. This means the actual computer only has 7 Analog tuners. Anyone can do that so long as they buy at least 4 of the Haupaguge 500 cards. Yes, I know that adds up to 8, so you can in fact top them. Also ~300GB of hard drive space deicated to programs and windows, there's no reason for that, ~40 would do.
- HottSauce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I could buy 2, *maybe* three channels having something worth recording during the same timeslot... but 11?"
You obviously don't have NFL Sunday Ticket. - evilpanda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0johnnyrotten is on the ball about the software.rnrnI've been using Snapstream from time to time for ~4 years now (first time was for the 2002 World Cup) and in general it's been a bad experience. I used it initially to capture games while I was at work and recording would spontanously fail without warning. The entire system would have to be rebooted in order to capture again.rnWatching TV via "Beyond TV" is a pain as it take about 5 seconds for the software to start displaying a channel and it's also a CPU hog just to watch TV (I'm running it on a 3.2 GHz P4 with two gigs of RAM on RAID 1).rnOverally, not impressive.
- monolith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who is that guy that setup his own ISP and cable provider? Didn't he do something like this? So that his customers could watch IP TV via the giant PVR he built?
- master_of_fm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it has 11 tuners, thats funny
- Wolfie351, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0w3weasel, the difference is user created categories vs pre-set generic categories. ReplayTV allows me to make my own menus. I've tried all the software programs you've listed and none of them are useful for custom organizing or archiving which you would desperately need if you find yourself recording 11 programs at the same time.
- mattb5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Come on, I can't believe nobody has said this yet:
"But this one goes to 11"
~Nigel Tufnel - csimpkins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0$4284.90 - LMAO!
For that price, you might as well buy 11 commercially available DVRs and use the leftover cash on a new TV. - DiggUmFrog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The site is down. Maybe they should make a better site instead of spending all the money on making a crazy PVR.
- rabidbadger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dugg simply because it was "submitted by alcohol." As if ninety percent of digg articles aren't. ;)
- tinnabatty, on 04/06/2009, -0/+0pretty sweet. good information, thanks

http://blog.ashtech.info/2007/10/16/ - KillerTarget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They could of also added another PCI Express based tuner card in the extra PCI-E 16x slot that they weren't using. While I think this is overkill I can see it used as a base system for hotels or offices that offer TV to customers while they wait and let the customer choose what he/she wants to watch. The only problem that you would run into is running out of space.
- ChicagoFan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Beyond Tv Does not Work....AMd 2500 1.5 pc 3200 nforce Deluxe board witjh all the up dates..........even x800 pro clocket at xt levels,.........xxxxxck ..this is technology still is not hwere yet.....
- noodleNT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BTV has a free trial for 30 days. You guys should check it out. Many changes Love beer made over the past year. It has been stable on my machine for the past 4 months.
P.S. I am Currently downloading 24 for my flight back from Mexico... love BTV! - fbiss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0if you have something that records 11 channels at once, Why would you only use a 160 gb hard drive?rnrn
