- JayoxD, on 10/14/2007, -1/+36dd-wrt ftw? who needs a repeater when you can boost x-mit power
- Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17That is a bunch of BS, check out this tutorial on How to Increase Your Wi-Fi Signal from infinite solutions.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=LY8Wi7XRXCA - inactive, on 10/14/2007, -0/+14You mean DD-WRT, not WW-DRT. Just trying to help anyone who might do a search.
- Firehed, on 10/14/2007, -0/+10Agreed. I just put WW-DRT on my router, and everything works better on it. Getting it there was hideously painful, but La Fonera isn't really meant to change its firmware.
- Rikkochet, on 10/14/2007, -1/+10At a limit of 200mW on a WRT54GL that's double what the CRTC (Canada's communications ministry) allows without a freaking broadcast license.
Haven't had a problem since - take that, walls! dd-WRT is a great custom firmware. - inactive, on 10/14/2007, -0/+9Indeed. I've been using the Tomato firmware on my WRT54Gv2 for several months now, and it is fantastic. Fast, simple, stable, and provides some nice functionality over the stock firmware that useful rather than esoteric. I also run a script on it that results in it doing adblocking for my entire LAN (with an autoupdated adserver list) with no per-client setup.
- colto, on 10/14/2007, -0/+9He said Linux firmware not a Linux distribution. You are putting Linux on the router rather than the computer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dd-wrt
- andrewonfire, on 10/13/2007, -3/+12I always thought that if you add an 802.11b device on an 802.11g network, it slows the whole network down. But maybe I'm just uneducated.
- silvershadow21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8That would be a "poisoning the well" logical fallacy.
That said, I'd take the advice with a grain of salt. :p - TheTaoOfBill, on 10/13/2007, -1/+810 Tips for improving your wireless network. From the people who still haven't put WiFi on the 360.

12. Change the default password. - Dokument, on 10/14/2007, -0/+6yeah flashing fon's makes me want to slit my wrists vertically
- Firehed, on 10/13/2007, -1/+7Yes, unless you have a MIMO router, which should be able to put a different speed on each antenna.
- z0zin, on 10/14/2007, -9/+15Five of those recommendations are basically saying to buy more *****, in order to increase signal strength; no thanks Microsoft.
- MikeyMoose, on 01/30/2009, -0/+4I'll "third" that - DD-WRT is freaking awsome. QoS that works, stable, multiple ssids...
- cr3ative, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's to promote that "Equal Rights for Females in Computing" campaign.
- smashcrab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Best tip ever.
- jhaks, on 10/14/2007, -0/+3Your comment makes no sense at all. These are all pretty valid ways to improve your network. So I don't see what's the problem. To have a good network you need good hardware and the right setup. All types of hardware have limits. If you want something better then you have to go buy better hardware.

- bromac, on 10/14/2007, -0/+3Actually, 2.4gHz is limited to 1W tx power in Canada. With the antenna/cable/amp gain/loss, you have a total limit of 4W EIRP (Equivalent isotropically radiated power). It's Industry Canada that regulates spectrum here too, but 2.4gHz is license exempt so long as they adhere to those rules. I have a 1W amp in the shop right now that I would hook up if it wouldn't allow people a few clicks away to access my wifi.
CRTC just makes sure the telcos and media stations play nice. Please learn more about your own countries telecommunications laws before presenting them to the world. - raynar, on 10/14/2007, -2/+5How can it be hard? You just plug in, run the update, and then customize a few things...took me 5 minutes MAYBE.

Now *this* is useful. Is there a how-to somewhere in the tubes for this? Thanks in advance for any details. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm not a gamer or an Ms product user, so your comment surprised me and I did two quick Google searches. Apparently, they do sell an accessory for it called the "Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adapter." Something like that should be builtin these days, but I wanted to make sure you were aware of the option.
- redxii, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If you have an omni-directional antenna then you can try making a parabolic reflector: http://binarywolf.com/249/diy-parabolic-reflector. ...
- bromac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're missing the point. Wireless networks aren't about gads of bandwidth. They're about ENOUGH bandwidth for your < 5mbit internet connection.
Oh, and they're about not having to run network cable through your attic. - wolfiezero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why does MS always presume that I have a computer in my kitchen... I feel like I'm missing out on something here!?
- PRlME, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1whats a good website to ask questions like; Whats a 13 Dbi Sector Panel Antenna? and
how to set up a WiMax setup on my roof? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So your big concluding point is that wireless networks aren't worth the hassle if you're only 5 feet away? Umm.. Duh? And why does it sound like you're against WiFi? Don't forget that some of us enjoy the interweb in many places beyond the walls of home.
- protogenxl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"6. Add a wireless repeater."
Repeaters kill your bandwidth. It is better to get a wall mountable POE WAP and run a network cable through your attic. - MarkKezner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A) It doesn't suck with the right hardware. Mine works great.
B) If others choose Linux that's their choice, so you have no good reason to troll them for it.. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1www.google.com
- kd1s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I live in an apartment that's 1,100 square feet. My WAP54G is tucked into a corner in the middle room on the northern side of the apartment.
I orient the one antenna horizontally, and the other vertically. Polarization matters.
Coverage is perfect throughout the apartment, the basement and the apartment upstairs as well as about a 250' radius around the building.
I suppose if you had a McMansion you might need repeaters but for most homes a decent access point is the answer. - PJBovoNox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you learned to spell, people might take you more seriously. That's not rediculous [sic]!
- SanTe, on 10/16/2007, -0/+1Thanks dbixler!
- roberto_deneero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Who the hell would listen to the King of All Security Holes (a.k.a. M$) for their wireless security advice?? We may as well ask Bin Laden for advice on foreign policy.
