(Video) 8088 Corruption....awesome hack
video.google.com — Color video running at 30 frames per second, with audio, on an original 4.77MHz 8088 IBM PC Model 5150 with 640K RAM, CGA video, 10MB drive, and Sound Blaster Pro. No tricks, this is for real! This kind of speed is only achievable using text mode (!) and 8088 assembler. Programmer: Jim Leonard

- digg it
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1That is too cool. Now do it on an Apple ][.
- tylerni7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That was incredible...
- Chris_F, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4Ah, this isn't a hack. You don't just call anything dealing with a computer or other electronic device a hack. People just through that word around. Also it would really be 8086 assembler because the 8088 was just a 8086 with a 8-bit data bus.
- tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Awesome.
- psytek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0warm fuzzy feeling...
- verucasalt, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Terrible video quality... no digg
- Chris_F, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0The web video or the video on the 5150? If the later then for christ sakes, don't be an ass. It's only a freaking 8088, which operates at what, close to 330,000 instructions/second.
If the former, then forget I said anything. - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Terrible video quality... no digg"
Are you talking about the pixelation on the monitor? - Ruckus21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2WOW Why couldn't Microsoft do that back in the day. I might have kept my 8086 instead of unloading $1500.00 for a killer 286. No good old days when it comes to tech.
- awhite2600, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Anyone that doesn't digg this probably never used (or programmed) hardware of this vintage. This is an awesome accomplishment. Well done!
- Chris_F, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"WOW Why couldn't Microsoft do that back in the day."
They had no way to capture and encode the video. - Jibberish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Very impressive, and how can anybody diss this post? If all is true with how it was said to have been accomplished, then that took some mad skills.
- jkendel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1i had the same machine, only with a monocrome green monitor....i think?
- capajc, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Dugg, tho I'm hoping he's using his talents for more important things...
- Ebenonce, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This is actually very impressive, I'm impressed.
Seriously cool, worth every Digg and every positive comment. - BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1That is absolutely amazing.
I can't believe people aren't digging this. - capajc, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0And the poster's use of the word "hack" was dumb.
- dickmnixon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I digg it simply for the sweet sound of that keyboard. I miss Ultima ][ and Wizardry. Most of you are to young to remember these games but they where our "halo". Why can't they make 'em like that anymore?
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Oh yeah he "hacked" that thing alright...
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This is actually a true demo. You can try it from http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=13722 ...
- digitaldivider, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0dugg because I hate programming. It is hell. This must've taken many hours, and lots of coffee.
- jaybones1515, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Sure but will it play Halo 3? Ha ha just kidding. Cool stuff. +dugged.
- theuber1337, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Holy mother of Perl! That is so awesome. I'm VERY impressed...
- sw96, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0That's one hardcore joystick on top there..
- tylerman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0amazing
- Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0That's damned impressive. Too bad it took more than 20 years for somebody to bother with something so impressive.
- ngageguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0digg effect!
- citrusfizz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1impressive but does it run linux....
haha - Padrino, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0Um. You've got to be kidding me. Its not impressive at all :) Ok sure its video but come on..... Its an 8088 who cares.
- sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Kinda neat, but I'm sure rendering the video into text was done on a powerful modern machine. After that's done playing the results on a machine this old, though not trivial, probably isn't as hard as you might think.
- ZekeSulastin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0OMGWTF ... currently owning several 8088s, all I can say is OMFG THAT'S AMAZING!!!
I always thought the old tech demos were cool ... too bad modern hardware renders modern demos meaningless - CaptainTylor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0.... not enough to detail to really see whats going on there, but isn't this just basically an ASM demo? Anybody else remember those?
- whitesanjuro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"hacking means exploring the limits of what is possible, in a spirit of playful cleverness." ~ rms http://www.stallman.org/articles/on-hacking.html
- ZekeSulastin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1(Sorry for the double post) Yeah, an ASM demo and video done in text - brings ASCII art to a whole new level of meaning :P
(go look at the link to the actual file and look at the screenshot) - fluffyturtle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Dupe
- Vector713, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0that was freaking cool. it makes me wonder what i could do with the old 200mhz dell in the garage.
gaming rig perhaps? - yensed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Sorry, this video is currently un-available" - google video
- bricolage, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Is that his cat in the background at the end? I totally miss those OG keyboards with the inch high key action and the 'spackle' finish.
- engalicorn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Google digg effect?
Is that possible? - Mike89, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1***** up with the Digg Effect comments, it's google! For christs sake
- CompACE, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0All i have to say is that was great. Nice find.
- Mike89, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0No it's not. Digg only generates a around 10 thousand hits to a site, and this wouldnt make google blink
- Mike89, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Is that audio part of the video? Or is it just dubbed ontop of the video submitted? Like, is the audio coming out of the PC?
- plaxx, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1LOL! WHAT A ***** NERD!!!
look at his little mcdonalds cup. lol. no digg because he's gay with bill gates.. - Darth_tater, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i saw this on hackday a few hrs ago...
for those that didnt see it
it was pretty ***** awesome! - rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this indeed was a hack.
- plarp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i had full motion full screen video and 256 colors from a pc and it was still the 80's.. it was called an Amiga..
- absurdist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6For those of you whose reaction to this is a collective "big deal", I'll be generous and assume your average age is 14.
The whole point is similar to Mark Twain's famous comment about the singing dog: "The marvel is not that it does it well, but that it does it at all."
MAJOR digg. - visiblepulse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0woot! Steve Gibson would love it.
- skabyss, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I wish I would have never wasted those few moments of my life.
Okay, cool for the technology then, but THIS IS 2006. Who gives a *****, no serious computer person would still use that piece of *****. -
