- zwendkos, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10I don't understand why people think that it's so crazy for golfers to take steroids. Hitting the ball a long way is a very large part of the game, especially these days with courses being "Tiger Proofed." It should come as no surprise, and I would imagine that there is more than just one player using steroids. Heck, without any testing, why wouldn't some of these guys, at least those who have no moral dilemma with it or care for their bodies in the future, reap the incredible monetary benefits of cheating?
- FulcrumVitesse, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Of course some players are doped. Why should golf be an exception?
- theinept, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Since when is creatine a banned substance?
- Dougman82, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Not really... Hitting a long ball in golf is about 90% good form and movement and 10% strength. Steroids might get you an extra 10 yards on that drive, but really, I wouldn't get upset if I was playing against someone on steroids.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7not as ridiculous as testing chess players for steroids.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6LOL.
That's the equivalent of saying someone can't be a pro-fisherman because they use steroids.
What does it matter? The sport is NOT dependent on strength. Hell, look at half the men who play. - zioxide, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That's true, but hitting the 350 yard drive is only the first aspect of playing golf. Then you have to hit an approach shot to the green, chip on to the green if you miss, and then putt.
Steroids would only help on the first part, and would not help at all (or could even make you worse) at the other three parts. - skyfire1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2My friend takes steriods while playing World of Warcraft.
- bachdog, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"whether it's HGH, whether it's creatine, or whether it's steroids, I know for a fact that some golfers are doing it."
HGH and [anabolic] steroids are hormones!
Creatine is a bodybuilding supplement, with a little evidence that it improves strength and performance, but it's not strong evidence. Some say the benefit of creatine comes as a the result of more water entering the muscle cells. It's not a banned substance either - EarlOfLade, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Golf should, just like all other INTERNATIONAL sports, submit to the IOC type of doping testing and with the same punishments.
First offense: 2 years exclusion.
Second offense: Life.
Same should be done for local US sports like American "football", baseball, basket etc. - zioxide, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Long drives really don't mean anything. Great, you can hit the ball 10 yards farther. But if your form is *****, good luck getting it close to the pin so you can get a good score on a hole.
Bottom line in golf is that accuracy is more important than distance. I've seen old guys (like 80s) who can only hit the ball 150 yards but they hit it perfectly straight. It takes them an extra shot to get it on the green, but they're still going to get a better score than the guy who crushes his drive but then takes 6 putts/chips to get it in the hole.
The difference between golf and baseball is in baseball, if you hit it farther, you get it over the fence and hit a home run. This directly gives you a point. Hitting the ball an extra ten yards on a drive isn't going to make a difference because you still have to be able to do the other stuff too. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Creatine makes it so the muscles recover in a more efficient manner. Makes you less sore.
It makes the muscle cells retain a bit of water so the muscles look fuller, but that's about it. People tend to mistake that for "growing too quickly". It's just a visual effect and doesn't make you an ounce stronger.
It's not a performance enhancer my any means. - blaaguuu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Most baseball players respect the tradition of the game too much to do it, too... But some people are just in it to win, and make a *****-load of money in the process.
- dynomyte, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This is as surprising as saying people use wall hacks in CS (seriously).
- Birdoftruth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Oh no, he knows 1!! that crazyyyy
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Steroid use would have little to no effect on golf players. If strength was the key factor, all NFL players would retire and end up being PGA Pro's, racking up extra $$ on the course. The absolute LAST thing you want to do when hitting a golf ball is to ***** up your form by trying to "muscle" or "power" the ball off the ground. It has more to do with form than anything.
- brharri1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1If hormones don't make a difference, then why aren't women as good as men at golf?
- JoeDonH, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1PGA and Steroids? Please. The PBA better watch out though... have you seen the hooks those guys throw?
- CrimsonBlur, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I suppose steroids would help a golfer hit the ball farther about as much as it would help a baseball player, so I suppose it's not totally nutty. They're not exactly the same thing, but it's pretty close. I've always wondered how steroids really help baseball players hit farther, since it's mostly just timing and accuracy (just like golf).
- RUFFyamahaRYDER, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Agreed... The word "creatine" shouldn't have even come up in this article. Just goes to show that people don't have a clue about what steroids are or what supplements are.
- zwendkos, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1That's ridiculous! So you're saying you wouldn't have a problem with playing against baseball players on steroids then. A baseball swing is just as much form as it is strength. That's the difference between a Barry Bonds and some minor league loser on steroids. Even that 10 yards on a drive consistently makes a difference, just like 30 extra feet on fly balls makes more of them home runs!
- rebuilder, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1No idea, there doesn't even seem to be any consensus on whether it has any real effect or no. Even those who say it does work note all it will do is speed up recovery between sets in weight lifting, allowing a person to train a bit harder. If creatine was banned, then by the same logic protein supplements and especially recovery drinks etc. should be as well. (Although I seem to recall that creatine IS illegal in Germany, for some reason.)
- nova6868, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This is retarded. I play golf, and I think this is retarded. Hormones aren't some magical wonder drug that make you better at sports. They simply increase nitrogen retention and protein metabolism, resulting in muscle growth and increased strength.
Maybe some golfers are taking them? ...and they are called IDIOTS. Because hormones won't do anything to improve your golf game. So you have more muscle mass? Congratulations...you still suck at golf. It's about the equivalent of taking hormones to improve your foosball game, cuz you wanna be able to turn those handles faster. - thatsmyaibo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Couldn't you link us to AP instead of your digg submission? Nice try.
- catalysis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Think about it. In the PGA, all of the top golfers are very close in skill. If one started taking steroids to drive the ball another 20-50 yards, that would be a HUGE advantage. They aren't talking about some amateur shooting up and suddenly beating Tiger Woods.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Actually Club Speed, just like bat speed in baseball, generates distance and power. Form keeps it straight and on the fairway.
- rassoodock, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"I really think John Daly and Phil Mickelson are juicing, no way you get their physique without being on the stuff."
Well, I think jelly donuts would do the trick - in2deep, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1No way!
- CornStarch, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1There's always football.
- DTJunkie07, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It doesn't mater how far you hit the ball in golf as much as it matters to stay out of hazards and put the ball in the fairway and make putts when they are needed. Cory Paven is a PGA tour professional with one of the weakest drives on tour but has had more success in his career than most guys stronger than him. No amount of steroids will help you make that 15 foot birdy putt to win the match.
- LethalAmbition, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I knew Tiger Woods did some *****
- rassoodock, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Hmmmmmmmmmmmm... a player who suddenly got massively bigger... I wonder who he could be talk about.. could it be Tig... ARGH i've been struck by a lightning bolt.. HELP! ..Ahem... No, nobody does anything. Only hangover and medrol packs. Yup.
- CoolWind, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Steroids and performance enhancing drugs and anxiety meds, etc.should be tested for in EVERY sport so that nobody will feel they need to take drugs or steroids in order to be competitive. It would be helpful if the PGA would do testing to permanently clear the names of current PGA stars.
I'm quite sure that tennis players are finding that steroids and other drugs are helpful for various reasons. Did you see how lifeless Maria Sharapova looked during her Wimbledon matches? I would test her for sure. - catalysis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Hitting a ball in MLB is 90% form, but that doesn't mean a little juice won't get it over the wall.
- haydesigner, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Well, as long *you* think that, why should they bother then?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Well, it's similar to needing Sparknotes for Dr. Suess books. Good job Golfers.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1That assumption is a little false. Remember the gold medalist snow-boarder who got stripped of his medals after testing positive for marijuana? I don't think that was technically performance enhancing.
- echeski1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Don't get me wrong I really enjoy the game of golf, but honestly remind me why we care if steroids are used in golf. Golf has so little to do with strength that I feel confident in breaking down the sport as 90% mental, 9% gear (type of clubs and golf balls used, although at that level everyone has the same technology) and 1% physical strength. The only way strength may help is in driving distance. And no matter how strong someone is it is near impossible for anyone to ever gain that much from length of drive because on par 4's and 5's (holes that by and large are not driven in one shot) the second shot is 100% touch and 0% strength.
- z3r0c0O1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1So I guess Golf is officially a sport now?

Gary Player said Wednesday he knows of at least one golfer who has used steroids, and he urged golf organizations to move quickly toward a random drug-testing plan…."One guy told me -- and I took an oath prior to him telling me -- but he told me what he did and I could see this massive change in him," Player said. "And somebody else told me something I also promised I wouldn't tell, that verified others had done it."-espn.com
Good thing I told him all those really secret things that I don’t ever want anybody else to hear. Wait he said he took an oath not to say anything both times…that bastard. But seriously can you really believe a guy who says two people told him and he swore not to tell anyone. I think even if he’s telling the truth he’s lost all credibility so the golf organizations should jus dismiss the charges he’s made. I really think John Daly and Phil Mickelson are juicing, no way you get their physique without being on the stuff. - brycelb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Have to agree. Tradition goes out the window when the winner gets about a million a tourney.
- weetwg01, on 02/03/2008, -0/+0Thank you for your information
http://golftipworld.com/ - megabolix, on 09/22/2008, -0/+0Growing up I envied many baseball stars and their extraordinary ability to play the game. Now every record broken by anyone is under scrutiny and has an asterisk next to it in my mind. I loved watching baseball so much more before I knew steroids were involved in the game...i has really ruined the love of the game for me and I feel like it has for many other fans of the sport. I don't understand how we have people dying over in Iraq but yet our government is somehow worried about steroids in baseball.

- SupaFupa, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0As one golf announcer told the world (in his last broadcast ever), its because their breasts get in the way.
- reginalduk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I thought the drug problem in golf was mainly for beta blockers. Theres a definite advantage to slowing the heart rate. Some golfers do look a bit spaced at times, mentioning no names...
- eminor, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0hitting the ball farther isn't going to help you win tournaments. whoever is using steroids to help his golf game is just plain stupid.
