- mikeazorin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+62Just to clear this up, because it's not obvious: The article is referring to GOLF and not tennis as many people think.
http://news.google.com/news?q=+Alexis+Thompson - Lax32, on 10/11/2007, -18/+54How many years of her childhood has she missed out on (and will she miss out on) because her parents are probably treating her like an investment and not like a child?
Scary. - tdogg241, on 10/11/2007, -14/+45AMERICA! ***** YEAH!!!
- Daniel591992, on 10/11/2007, -2/+29*sighs*
- whataboutdave, on 10/11/2007, -2/+25How many decades of improvement and competitive play does she potentially have ahead of her? Scary.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15Must be fun for all of those older folks to know that a 12 year old can kick their ass at golf. Good for her.
- dunezone, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14"How many decades of improvement and competitive play does she potentially have ahead of her?"
Its very common for women to be good athletes when their younger. The problem for women comes when they mature because they start adding weight on and their hips become wider because they are preparing to become baby makers.
But this is golf so who knows... - davidrools, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16At first I thought this was talking about the Tennis US Open...that would be insane. A 12 year old pro golfer is much more believable.
- wonderboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Anyone can play pretty much any sport... playing it well is what earns you money...
- chriskzoo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Talented, over-exposed, never won a damn thing?
- wTheOnew, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Idiot, US Women's Open in golf. RTFA!
- smedrick, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Sweet...I was looking for some creepy wallpaper for my desktop.
- wTheOnew, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7I've played in a few of the same tournaments as this girl and I must say she is an amazing golfer! She has won the Doral-Publix Christmas three years running playing in the oldest age group, against girls up to 18 years old. Kudos to her for qualifying!
Makes sense though, she comes from a great family for golf, considering Nic Thompson is her brother. (kind of weird, met her playing golf in Miami, met him at Tech) - thejokell, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Not only that, but they should specify that it's golf. Who knew there was another tournament called the US Open besides the one played every August in Flushing Meadows?
- metamorfoza, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5nah, she'll probably ditch it by the time she comes into puberty.
- TheHal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The title should say Womans US Open... kinda misleading til you read the subject. Especially when they are saying this is the hardest US Open course to date.
- hbweb500, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Evidently women's golf isn't all that competitive if there are a handful of teenagers qualifying.
- Daniel591992, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5oh, crap. I thought this story was about tennis
- EntropyFan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Actually, it is. I'm an OK (nothing like pro, but OK) to total hack golfer, depending on how much I play in a year, and I love getting my butt kicked by the local high school teams. It is an ego trip for them to simply dominate a round against 'us old folk', and I like seeing people, regardless of their age, with real skill.
It is the reason I like golf; there isn't much of 'me against them', just 'us against the course'. or 'me against my last round' - DogEars, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4But very few people can play golf well.
- sathias, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Quick, lets put rediculous amounts of pressure and media attention on her, that will really allow her game to develop.
*cough* - mygrayarea, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/superpsionic/snorgirl.jpg
- EvoldicA, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3For the poster above... 12 years old.. and she's already mastered her stroke.
- swordedge, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2IIRC, Pressel got a pair of 77's during her foray as a 12 year old. Lets see if she can beat that. Oh, and if Wie's arm isn't healed, she'll beat her.
- chriskzoo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3A sectional qualifier is NOT the US Open.
- DougPenn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2She better be hotter than the Snorg girl when she gets older.
- z3021017, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"Thompson qualified at the age of 12 years, four months and one day, beating the previous record of Morgan Pressel, who was 12 years, 11 months and 21 days old when she qualified for the 2001 Women's Open, which was also conducted at Pine Needles."
- lavoie0ca, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1first word is often in caps....
- cuoops, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Good stats - http://www.floridajuniortour.org/players/viewPlayer.asp?pID=24416
- TheHal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Read much? She beat out another girl to be the youngest ever.. the other girl qaulified in 2001.
- diggerdong, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4pics or it didn't happen. jk jk.
edit: i just realized how much of a perv i must sound like. - frozenwookie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1check her for roids
- tony4moroney, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1its not about how prodigious this girl is. im sure shes got talent.
the real question here is. how shallow is the talent pool in women's golf that a 12 year old can qualify? - robz0r, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Ladies and Gentlement of the jury i ask you to RTFA.
- swordedge, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1In tennis, due to Jennifer Capriotti and a few others, you must be 16 to try and qualify and you do it against current pro's. In golf, that age limit is not there and qualifications is often against other amateurs.
No, it is NOT a handful. Three in 7 years is not a handful (Pressel, Wie, and this girl (Creamer was older and I can't remember how old Wie was but she's only 17 NOW)). Their was a guy that did well at 16 in the PGA but I don't remember details.
Marriage, it won't affect golf game for any of the ladies. Pregnancy does but the sometimes play tournaments during that. You guys are way too cynical. - undetected, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@swordedge "and if Wie's arm ..., she'll beat her."
I suddenly got an image of Wie using her iron to physically beat up on the 12 yr old newcomer. - deeboe, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I love that AMERICAN was in caps!
- duffman03, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I thought we were talking about tennis until i saw the pic. Golf sucks.
- lavoie0ca, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1everyone who is like oh its just golf is dumb, and here's why: You think it would be more amazing for a 12 year old to hit a bright yellow fuzzy ball with a huge racket than for a 12 year old to hit a tiny bumpy white ball 300+ yards with a tiny racket on the end of a long stick?
- cuj0, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1She's ***** 6'3
- sedatedson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0What's with the awkward phrasing of the title of this?
- xShad0w, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1@ mikeazorin
thanks for clearing that up i was a little confused because i doubt they would allow 12 year olds to compete against pros like andy roddick even if they are really good, but gold is ...somethin else - Kinneas12, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Ah. See I skim stories because there are too many on Digg. Thanks for that. I missed it since my brain didn't intuitively expect a second 12 year-old to be mentioned in the story :P
- fuegosecret, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Decades?? Try 3 more years. Maybe 4. At that point marriage will be more important. Wake me when she places.
- Ladymongoose, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1girlpower!
- dstargel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0The big issue is not that she qualifies once, but does she keep qualifying and turn into a major talent. This kind of thing will continue to happen as Tiger Woods opened up the interest of golf so much to younger players. But, boy or girl, one US Open qualification doesn't make a phenom yet.
