- imacommi, on 07/21/2008, -2/+18This is an absurd idea. When MJ was out hurt did the bulls put an * next to the games if they won/lost? Def not.

- nahsrocketeer75, on 07/21/2008, -4/+14Hey, Harrington deserves full credit and what Norman did was absolutely amazing. It was just as entertaining as any other hotly contested major. ... However, a healthy Tiger wins that tournament by 6-8 shots.
- biggerapple3am, on 07/22/2008, -1/+9Yes, the asterisk is a bad idea. I think they should just give the trophy to Tiger.
- jarjarwang, on 07/22/2008, -0/+8I'm so sick of people placing an asterisk next to a Tiger-less British!
- AmyVernon, on 07/21/2008, -1/+8he totally deserves full credit... Tiger doesn't win absolutely every tourney he's in. That's ridiculous...
- LMControl, on 07/22/2008, -0/+7You know... I'm pretty sure Tiger has lost more majors than he's won, so this asterisk talk is just plain BS. Had Tiger won every major since '97 and missed this one.... then we could talk about it. Sports writers are usually the worst of the lot when it comes to journalists.
- Vikesrock, on 07/22/2008, -0/+5The term "British Open" is not completely incorrect. Although the official name of the tournament is "The Open Championship", outside of the UK "The British Open" is an acceptable way to refer to the event. The PGA Tour uses "The British Open" when referring to the tournament. This name is also use in many other countries, as they refer to their own open format tournaments as "The Open".
- slimjim85, on 07/22/2008, -0/+4No one is saying Harrington is 'the best golfer' - he was just the best golfer last weekend at The Open... Harrington was also the best golfer of the weekend last year when Tiger was in the field - he is good and deserves all the credit in the world for his back to back Open victories.
- fantasticjon, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3This kind of news is just bait to get viewers to see advertisements.
In other news, 10 reasons that we should grill up the losing horse at the Kentucky Derby. Everyone! Read our absurd story and send it to all your friends and look at our advertisements! - inactive, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3Who are these people?
This story was the first I've heard of the suggestion. - Stavrosian, on 07/22/2008, -2/+5Just tired of hearing people use this completely incorrect term. It's had the same ***** name for the last 150 years, shouldn't you be getting it right by now?
- triggerfinger, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2What a load of nonsense if Tiger was in the Open there is no way of knowing how he would have fared or if it would have affected the result. That was one tough game of golf and a true champion won it. and BTW Harrington did beat Tiger in the 2007 Open http://www.golfsurround.com/openchampionship/2007/ ...
- Hellman109, on 07/22/2008, -1/+3How about placing an asterix next to any game in any sport where the top players of any era werent all playing in the teams?
Oh wait, that would be pointless.
Unless someone kneecapped tiger so he couldnt enter, what your suggesting is stupid. - Jexie, on 07/22/2008, -1/+3Obviously people are going to say what they'll say about winning a tournament Tiger was not involved in but 'institutionalizing' something like this in the PGA is just a horrible idea and sets a bad precedent for the future of the organization.
- MrARPA, on 07/22/2008, -1/+3Tiger isn't always the best golfer in a tournament (otherwise he'd win them all) so your statement doesn't hold true.
- jrking, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2This is just sports writers trying to create a story where there is none. If you could go back in time 10 years with the knowledge of who will win every major, you could say the same thing about any player... ie, "Had Trevor Immelman not played in the 2008 Masters, there would have to be an asterisk placed next to the eventual winner". No one knows who will catch fire in any given week. Just because Tiger is the greatest player on the planet doesn't mean he would have definitely won had he been playing. If that's the case they might as well call off any tournament he ever enters and just give him the trophy and the rest of the field 4 days off.
- jrking, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2If it didn't interest you simply because one player wasn't there then you are not a true fan of golf, therefore your opinion is not important.
- catkillcurious, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2Well done, walt.
- Stavrosian, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2I wouldn't be so sure. His play off the tee is absolutely shocking, and it's only his unbelievable play around the greens that wins him all the tournaments. Faced with rough like that at Birkdale he might not get away with it.
- ObamaWins08, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2I think a better analogy would be putting asterisks next to the 94 and 95 Houston NBA championships, simply because Jordan wasn't there to win. Woefully not cool.
- BOFH2, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2some people? Some writer who thinks the world revolves around Tiger Woods.
- catkillcurious, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1When you're the greatest golfer on Earth... Whats next? Asterisks.
- hilo4321, on 07/22/2008, -1/+2while i dont agree with the asterisk, that's a bad analogy
it's not team tiger woods, it's just tiger woods - nomadxx7, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Sorry my lame attempt at a Barry Bonds joke
- withears, on 07/22/2008, -1/+1Thanks. We all know that golf doesn't need more "true fans."
- biggerapple3am, on 07/22/2008, -3/+3dude, gtfo.
- filmbandit, on 07/22/2008, -2/+1and that would actually be boring
- jamdogg, on 07/21/2008, -6/+5If you didn't beat the Tiger, you aint the the best golfer.
- withears, on 07/22/2008, -2/+1I didn't even know (or care) who won the British Open until I saw this article. I knew Norman was leading going into the final round, but without Tiger there, it didn't interest me enough to see it through.
There should be no asterisk, but without Tiger it's just not important. - nomadxx7, on 07/22/2008, -4/+1Wait I'm confused. Doesn't the asterisk mean that the win was contested because the winner was doing steroids?
- Stavrosian, on 07/22/2008, -8/+5It's called The Open Championship. The word "British" appears nowhere in anything related to the tournament.
- inactive, on 07/22/2008, -9/+2How can it be a top competition if the best guy isn't competing?
