Here we go again...
Energy=power*time
Saying that the world's most powerful laser has the same energy as a hydrogen bomb implies that it can generate 4.184x10^15 or more joules of energy during a single firing sequence (equal to the energy contained in a 1-megaton thermonuclear device). What they meant to say was that it can generate the same amount of POWER seen in a hydrogen bomb but for an extremely small fraction of a nanosecond.
Or I could be wrong and the NIF and most of Livermore, CA is just a huge crater in the ground. - inactive, on 03/31/2009, -7/+119dugg for using elite military tech to produce sustainable green energy.
- omenmedia, on 03/31/2009, -1/+111Wasn't there some famous quote by someone that said "If you ever build a laser powerful enough to use as a weapon, don't worry about firing the laser - just drop it on the enemy"? I believe this laser qualifies. :)
- rx8geek, on 03/31/2009, -3/+95Pew pew pew!
- scarlettletter, on 03/31/2009, -4/+84$3.5B? Did I read that right? That would be one hell of a laser show.
- zip000, on 03/31/2009, -0/+69I bet you can make a lot of popcorn with this thing.
- wunderdog, on 03/31/2009, -1/+67This is Digg. Don't confuse everyone with facts.

- Dumbledorito, on 03/31/2009, -4/+64The "National Ignition Facility?" I wonder if it's hard to start up on cold mornings?

- greenroom628, on 03/31/2009, -0/+55if only mini me would stop humping the laser...

- Malteserr, on 03/31/2009, -0/+54Imagine the destruction you can cause by dropping 3 football fields on an enemy.
- Cyberdactyl, on 03/31/2009, -1/+53Very misleading title.
Sort of like saying I have the same force per square inch on the ground as a large dinosaur with my new "dino shoes" . . .which are actually golf shoes. - poidh, on 03/31/2009, -0/+45Will a mutated sea bass do? It's ill tempered if that helps.
- PacketPaul, on 03/31/2009, -1/+45Finally something that is capable of powering my new Flux Capacitor!

Horrible, Horrible joke. - Muspar, on 03/31/2009, -18/+59Step 1: Build a laser so powerful that nuclear weapons hang their heads in shame
Step 2: ????
Step 3: Profit! - darkNiGHTS, on 03/31/2009, -2/+38No an ass-shark.
- ballsjohnson, on 03/31/2009, -13/+49Holy Santa Clause *****.

- twoheadedboy00, on 03/31/2009, -0/+27there needs to be an up, down, and questionmark thumb on digg.
- Stormwern, on 03/31/2009, -1/+28If I get this right, it doesn't exactly generate the same energy as a hydrogen bomb, but rather the same heat, and only on a much smaller scale.
- zyklon, on 03/31/2009, -1/+27A shark with a big ass?
- Crimsoneer, on 03/31/2009, -0/+25Now, to invent a giant shark...
- freshgrease, on 03/31/2009, -0/+25HORRIBLE. I clicked it very cautiously, expecting something terrifying, but my boss looked over my shoulder.
- wyrdness, on 03/31/2009, -0/+24It's very hot indeed fusion.
- maz2331, on 03/31/2009, -0/+23The idea is to use it to heat and compress a pellet of fusion fuel, which then engages in a fusion reaction and yeilds more energy than was needed to fire the lasers.
- 350Zed, on 03/31/2009, -0/+23Reading comprehension fail... bravo.
- corytheboyd, on 03/31/2009, -0/+22CRYSIS?

- FeloniusMonkey, on 03/31/2009, -1/+20FYI, Governator: "Thousands of megawatts" = "Gigawatts".
Most don't say "thousands of thousands" of dollars, when they really mean "millions". - flossdaily, on 03/31/2009, -0/+18Step 2: Fill a house with popcorn.
- TheUngod, on 03/31/2009, -0/+18But when they hold the world ransom for 100B you'll understand why it was a worthwhile investment

- spencemitch05, on 03/31/2009, -0/+173.5 billion... how about...
"one million dollars..." - sageerrant, on 03/31/2009, -0/+17Megalodon with lasers?
Let's do this thing. - ozroy, on 03/31/2009, -0/+17It's not cold fusion.
- Contradictions, on 03/31/2009, -1/+18That really depends on which end of the laser you are on, right?
- Pillar007, on 03/31/2009, -1/+17NICE. I clicked it very cautiously, expecting something terrifying, but was then pleasantly surprised.
