- jman583, on 06/21/2008, -5/+40"On average, the brains of men in the study were 13 percent larger than the women."
That's all I need to know. - Dysarthria, on 06/21/2008, -5/+29You will never see research showing any male superiority to women funded by the NIH; though the opposite is applauded in research circles.
- salmonmoose, on 06/21/2008, -1/+21From what I've read, there is far more variation in men; we are evolution's plaything.
Both men and women have around the same average intelligence, but the spread is larger in men. We are more likely to be smarter, and similarly, more likely to be stupider. - DataMouse, on 06/21/2008, -3/+21It isn't actually the size of the brain that determines intellegence - it is the surface area.
Einstein had a smaller than average brain, but his brain's surface area was much larger due to the tightness of the ridges.
Don't take this personal women. Your bodies are around 13% smaller than men's too. - inactive, on 06/21/2008, -2/+19Also eating brains help you absorb the intelligence stored in them. Rabbit brains are my fav. That explains my quick wit and genius.
- mycatsasha, on 06/21/2008, -1/+17There have been so many other studies that have shown evidence contrary to this. This is one study. Even this study shows that men and women scored equally on language tests.
Elephants have MUCH larger brains than us. They haven't taken over the world. - econojon, on 06/21/2008, -2/+13Does a large brain make up for small penis size?
- Ghorkvos, on 06/21/2008, -1/+12They lack thumbs
- inactive, on 06/21/2008, -2/+12--->another female superiority stereo-type gets shot down.. yet again.. (go science) the whole woman are better at language and communication skills always makes me laugh.. thinking you're better doesn't mean that you are.. In my own experience woman have been as abysmally pathetic at communicating as men.. it's soooooooo true!
Now we just have to get rid of the other female stereo-types such as.. they never commit murder, they are more nurturing and caring, they never steel, they never sexually abuse men, woman and children and old people.. they never rob banks..they never falsely accuse people of rape.. they never ever do anything bad.. ever ever ;-) - theshizzler, on 06/21/2008, -1/+10You're just a woman with a small brain. With a brain a third the size of us. It's science.
- hauntedchippy, on 06/21/2008, -1/+8Does this mean Borat was right?
- surfacewound, on 06/21/2008, -0/+7How exactly does one "steel?"
- JettaMan, on 06/21/2008, -0/+4I agree that much scientific research, especially government funded research, is politically correct as opposed to truthful. In the eighties and nineties I remember a steady stream of curiously PC scientific findings, usually from CNN, that basically ran men into the ground. Nature is not PC.
- Ghorkvos, on 06/21/2008, -2/+6This test seems flawed, only 200 people and university students at that. The typical language skills would be higher for any individual partaking in this test than the average population. This study would only seem to reflect the population of university students at best.
- Stevethegreat, on 06/21/2008, -0/+4So? They're still stupider; according to numerous tests done to them their pattern recognition is by far inferior to us, under certain circumstances it would be comparable to -around- 40 IQ. This means that even if they had the exact same physiology with us (opposable thumbs, bipedalism) we would still regard them as retarded. There's strong bond between physiology and intelligence, but they're also separate entities.
- trlw, on 06/21/2008, -0/+4I've noticed people at Cambridge University have larger heads than normal, also the people with large heads tend to get better results too.
- digigeek, on 06/21/2008, -0/+3No, but if you bang your head repeatedly against a brick wall, it will make you smarter AND increase your schlong size. Hurry. Go try it!
- antonio97b, on 06/21/2008, -0/+3I'd suggest eating the brains of endangered dolphins. They taste great and they are really smart as well.
- perogi21, on 06/21/2008, -0/+3"The typical language skills would be higher for any individual partaking in this test than the average population."
Obviously they didn't use University of Arizona as their test sample. - bipolarruledout, on 06/21/2008, -2/+5All research has merit... unless it's tainted which you really will never know. (happens pretty often) I hate to make a blanket statement but women are better and some things and men are better at other things. That doesn't mean that there arn't exceptions but to ignore these differances is a disservice to everyone.
- dazparkour, on 06/21/2008, -0/+3Not if you are a woman.
- bipolarruledout, on 06/21/2008, -0/+2Just about every test is flawed but it's the only thing we have which makes it better than nothing. Thankfully very few decisions are based on ONE study... unless it was commissioned by marketing.
- DataMouse, on 06/22/2008, -0/+2It's from Anchorman...
Thanks for playing - DataMouse, on 06/21/2008, -0/+2A woman would have KNOWN how to say, "Don't take this personally, women." - but thanks for playing
:-)
If you're gonna pick fault, get it right... - smek2, on 06/21/2008, -0/+2That contradicts other studies which found that it isn't really the size of the brain, but the complexity of the neurons connections.
- beowulflee, on 06/21/2008, -0/+1While I was visiting grandparents back in Sichuan (China), vendors would sell cooked rabbit heads. I ate a ton of them. They were delicious. And yes, the best part was the brain.
- inactive, on 06/21/2008, -1/+2Brain size? or body to brain ratio?
- Haoie, on 06/21/2008, -0/+1Of course a lot of other factors too, come into play, when determining intelligence.
Bigger brains/larger surface area don't always mean smarter people, in other words. - bipolarruledout, on 06/21/2008, -0/+1Sort of... you know what they say about all the blood rushing to the organ.... leaves little left for the brain.
- Bersy, on 06/21/2008, -0/+1I hear it also gives you bigger boobs and a thinner waistline if you're female.
- Dysarthria, on 06/21/2008, -1/+2-Sample sizes of 200 can have enough power to have merit.
-Some things about men are undeniable is that they are the dominant sex in most societies and have been for 1000's of years, and that men tend to be larger and stronger than women.
-If you were to hop in a time machine and jump back 80 years, you would find that there was no question of male superiority for centuries.
Maybe its time for you to measure your own head? - pooty2, on 06/22/2008, -0/+1I only eat tuna free dolphin.
- ajkrik, on 06/21/2008, -0/+1Are you sure?
- known, on 06/21/2008, -0/+1You are a product of your environment - Clement Stone
- gryphon50, on 06/21/2008, -0/+1maybe he means they are never steely like men? I'm not sure.
- spaceman84, on 06/22/2008, -1/+2Isn't it obvious that men possess better language skills than women? Certainly women talk a lot more, but how many truly great female authors are there? Don't try to tell me that women are discouraged from writing the way that they're discouraged from entering science or technical fields, because they aren't.
- SpykerSpeed, on 06/21/2008, -1/+2Some people type phonetically. It indicates superior language skillz.
- colasrtney, on 06/21/2008, -1/+2My nickname was Bonk in middle school.
- YukosEyes, on 06/21/2008, -0/+1It's interesting how differences get interpreted as superiority or weakness by some people instead of differences. It's always disturbing to see the infusion of ego into science ironically followed by statements such as: "thinking you're better doesn't mean that you are." I suppose it would be difficult for women to communicate "as men" but also for men to communicate as women. I suppose it would be difficult for any one person to communicate as any other individual, to think and perceive the same way as any other individual. We never see ALL the things that make us similar or that make us different due to the ego's need to focus on things like sex while ignoring others.
- JCPahl, on 06/21/2008, -1/+1Sturgeon's Law applicable yet again.
- bulletproofbra, on 06/21/2008, -6/+6Wow, it's almost as if male superiority over women is, and has been for centuries, a given requiring no research whatsoever.
And the study involved only 200 people? If you believe this you are a proven idiot, you can save yourself the bother of measuring your forehead. - bipolarruledout, on 06/21/2008, -2/+2You know they bring out these studies on the sexes, race, sexuality, whatever and OF COURSE there are going to be differances. Everyone I don't care who you are is somewhat unique in some way. Everyone has some crazy little habit that never surfaces unless you REALLY know them. Not everyone will have the same IQ, EQ, artistic ability or what have you. I'm not saying we should ignor these differances but recognise them and take advantage of them. The workplace is in sore need of adjestment in this reguard.
The other problem is you get a news article based on an abstract based on the study. Very few people want to read in depth into a study and a likely to interpret the results, just wrap it up in a nice neat package for the public to open. - sihayakara, on 06/21/2008, -0/+0opposable thumbs are a primate characteristic rather than one solely attributed to humans. in fact other primates have opposable thumbs and (big) toes.
no doubt, having an opposable thumb is an important part of human evolution as it has allowed us to fine tune our motor skills and begin making tools (as it has allowed chimpanzees to create tools). however, without bipedalism and encephalisation we wouldn't have been nearly as successful a species. - TheTjalian, on 06/21/2008, -1/+1Did you purposely mistake 13% as a third, or is that just an amazing case of irony up there?
- sihayakara, on 06/21/2008, -0/+0i think you would actually have to look up the study rather than just an this article it to get those details. and ***** sapiens are the most encephalised animal.
as far as skepticism goes, there are lies, damned lies, and statistics. ;) - flawlessjess, on 06/21/2008, -1/+1no it doesn't unless you consider money more important hahaha
- Insolent, on 06/21/2008, -0/+0I only got their sex drive. Now I'm frustrated all the time, damnit.
- surfacewound, on 06/21/2008, -2/+1Mmm, brains.
- sihayakara, on 06/21/2008, -1/+0it's not about an organisms absolute brain size, it's about encephalisation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Encephalization
and really, it's not thumbs either, as human encephalisation occurred after we became bipedal and we had opposeable thumbs prior to that. - ixid, on 06/21/2008, -1/+0Care to share?
