- brentnclemson, on 05/13/2008, -1/+11Had a soldier friend of the family (25 yrs old) go through this Simulation Treatment over the past several months.
While in Iraq, a small grenade was dropped in his tank, killing one of the four men in the tank. They apparently had to drive nearly a week before being able to clean the remains of the soldier out of the tank (not sure why...). He volunteered for experimental treatment including drugs and a simulated reinactment of the event.
Found out last week, on the year anniversary of the event, he killed himself by overdosing on the drugs... This definitely wasn't the answer for him, hope it's working w/ other soldiers. - munawarali2, on 05/13/2008, -0/+5 I'm amazed that the other 3 survived a grenade blast inside a tank. I doubt they walked away from that injury free.
Most likely they were operating in hostile territory the entire week, so didn't have a chance to park in security and clean everything out. - Waiting2awake, on 05/13/2008, -3/+9This is good news, but what would be better news is if American people gave enough of a damn to order their troops home. Somehow, someway, Americans have been stripped of their country and their backbone. Neutered if you will.
- inactive, on 05/13/2008, -2/+8Whatever opinion one might have about the war, we have to make sure the guys who are unfortunate enough to be a part of it get taken care of when they come home.
- jessehadden, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3I don't think that's what he said. I think his point is that we have a responsibility to take care of the lives of the people we've destroyed (by the hundreds of thousands) over there, especially the traumatized children who will grow up without parents & siblings. It's civilians that die, predominantly, in war -- a fact that Americans generally choose to ignore. The war against the Iraqi people is, essentially, a gigantic target painted over the faces of the children living there. You're right, in a way -- no individual soldier signs up to be a butcher, and no single soldier wants to go around killing children. But soldiers are for fighting wars, and that's what war is. You don't have to like it, but you have to deal with it. It's not those people's fault that Americans live in such a fantasy world, that they can think that signing up for the Army is a great way to pay for college with absolutely no immoral or unethical consequences.
- THE4IRON, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2"As you know, you have to go to war with the Army you have, not the Army you want"
I agree Disco1Stu, it is sad however that a majority are not. - kamikaze87, on 05/13/2008, -2/+6Dude we know...war sucks.
But damn stfu and quit acting like every soldier is in there wanting to kill ***** children. - inactive, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2 Unfortunately only 49% of Americans knew that during their last election.

Virtually Better (based in Atlanta) is the company that makes these environments (as shown by the publications page). Some of their latest work involves crisis response training and addiction therapy (click through some of the pictures on the site to see). - Asianwaste, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Yeap, an unfortunate close call the first election and then a pick your poison second election.
- Rotzooi, on 05/13/2008, -3/+5Does the simulation include a scenario where Bush wasn't voted in office, twice?
- brentnclemson, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Same thing I thought about the grenade, don't know the exact details though. I can't imagine the pressure inside a tank from a grenade blast!
- saxmaster, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1This treatment reminds me of some of the teachings of spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle. Usually, when he talks about dealing with a repetitive reaction (like a fear or an addiction), he recommends allowing the inner experience to unfold rather than trying to avoid it. This treatment seems to work in the same way. Soldiers are especially preoccupied with hiding their emotions, or with being strong, so it makes these problems even more difficult.
- CaptainLando, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1This is a very sad story.
I hope other diggers don't read this and assume that there is a correlation between PTSD treatment types and suicide. That would be a spurious connection and bad science. - Apocrypha, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1 ...sigh...I suppose it's just 'simulated' treatment too.
- Asianwaste, on 05/13/2008, -1/+2That's funny, I could've sworn that happened in Iraq... by the Marine Corp. ... not the Navy... the Navy that's in Guantanamo.... you know not soldiers... Sailors?

panem et circenses - drkmccrthy, on 05/13/2008, -1/+2okay. okay. stay with me here. I was joking. about making the soldiers, read: soliders, who killed puppies, feel like they were in the... guantanamo bay detention center, which is where a naval base is located. You see what I did there? I made a play on the technology... and insinuated that it might be used as punishment for people who did terrible things instead of being used to help traumatized veterans.
- MisticalZealot, on 05/13/2008, -0/+0Well said Kamikaze87
- Asianwaste, on 05/13/2008, -1/+2Would have worked better if you mentioned a Fort Leavenworth simulator.
- b1344, on 12/09/2008, -0/+0Its amazing what they can do with computer graphics (CG) technologies these days..
I wonder if we will every get to a point where training is not virtial (ie eveything is done via some sort of simulator)..
http://bob4art.blogspot.com/ - SimpleAlex, on 12/29/2008, -0/+0it's amazing what they can do nowadays... I hope this treatment will help soldiers.

http://makeupapplication.org/ - Asianwaste, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1Inclusion of one thing does not mean exclusion of another. You don't think there's any humanitarian aid sent over there?
- drkmccrthy, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1Military detention center, military prison, same difference. Which one would you rather be in?
- truthhammer, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1piss off
- inactive, on 05/13/2008, -6/+7 And yet, the oh so caring America has seem to have forgotten about the Trauma to the Iraq children!
- Apocrypha, on 05/13/2008, -2/+1Certainly, but they aren't really being taken care of are they? They're more likely to get sent back to Iraq rather than get the medical treatment they need. How many thousands of 'unfit' soldiers were sent back to Iraq?
- inactive, on 05/13/2008, -3/+1 Did I say that every soldier wants to kill children? No I did not, but since you and 'Mistical' live in a world of conjecture I won't waste my time trying to enlighten clouded reasoning.
- drkmccrthy, on 05/13/2008, -3/+1hey, thanks.
- drkmccrthy, on 05/13/2008, -9/+3virtual guantanamo simulator for puppy killing soldiers.
