- wthulhu, on 08/29/2009, -0/+4for those wondering what it is -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrofluid
- D4r7h3v1l, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Um, wow... not. Iron filings in oil, an electromagnet connected to some sort of audio transducer. It's impressive that they seem so completely impressed by something so elementary and useless."
So just because it is explainable means that we shouldn't be amused by it? This is the kind of thing that annoys me. "The universe isn't wonderous at all! It's just atoms and energy and some other science stuff.". - Cyberdactyl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Where can I get some of this stuff to play with??"
http://www.unitednuclear.com/magnets.htm - dchaosdx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1if they can only get it to make a cityscape of sorts, like in the first x-men movie when they have that pool of grey stuff that shows them their plans to beat magneto on ellis island. that would be nifty.
- scytale99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where can I get some of this stuff to play with??
- monolith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 BaniPani Thanks for the mirror. Ferrofluid rocks.
- BaniPani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very nice video, but the connection is very slow.
I mirror the file (temporarily): http://www.banipani.de/mirror/profloD.wmv - Sell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This just may be the most amazing thing i have ever seen. I hope this gets Dug hard! Thanks for sharing it Blue.
- burningmonk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So much for "Iron filings in oil" that are so "elementary and useless." Thanks for the wikipedia link wtfunkymonkey.
- Robinh66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1does anyone else think it's kind of creepy?
- anztac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You guys remember the United Nuclear site that had the Neodynium magnets on it for sale? I don't know if it's the same material, but browse down to the MagnaView Fluid on the page.
http://www.unitednuclear.com/magnets.htm
You can buy this stuff! - TexMachina, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Car suspension and coolant in high end speakers.
I was actually putting together the material to make my own ferrofluid sculpture about a year ago but ran into some problems with my original design idea. Instead of electromagnets I was going to use a very powerful neodymium magnet and some rotating plates of lead. I had it all planned out but when the ferrofluid arrived I discovered it was water based and quickly dried out when left to open air. It also stains like iodine and sticks to any transparent surface enough to blur it completely so a ferrofluid snow globe was out. I still have the bottle of fluid and the magnet and now I'm just waiting for inspiration to strike. - Morieris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I saw this at the same siggraph as sandwichpants. Very amazing in person.
I watched as a couple people got mesmerized enough to touch it... It ran down their arms and all over them. Lots of fun to watch, just don't touch it - kris2pe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well they could use this as an anti intrusion device! When burglars enters your house immediately this spikes come out & apparently will kill the burglar! (Kinda reminded b of Aeon Flux movie!)
- philovivero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Robinh66 thinking it's kind of creepy. I showed it to my wife, and she couldn't watch more than about 10 seconds of it. She said it scared her. So off she went.
She was able to watch the vibrated cornstarch video all the way through, though. They both seemed the same amount of "scariness" to me. - Slackwise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Disturbingly beautiful. I wish I could play with it!
- compressedaudio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i can see unknown things about magnetic fields
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We did this in Physics class about a month ago. Really cool stuff.
- m4dc0w, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now thats a good video. dugg.
- dlichteman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That was cool
++digg - peorth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Amazing!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1They deserve The Yiddish Cup..
- RMuffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That was freaking amazing.
I want some of that *****. - jccalhoun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It would be awesome if The Postal Service made a video using this!
- bpowah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nice. Now someone needs to find out if it can be combined with the corn starch phenomenon:
http://chaos.ph.utexas.edu/research/vibrated_cornstarch.htm
apparantly glass beads work. Why not ferrous beads? Then we'd have some freaky sculpture. - dfsiii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Practical applications for such a dynamic liquid/solid seem so futuristic, it's hard to think of how they could be used until we find a need for them. What a great link though. +digg
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12001, sure. But have you seen it before? Me, I haven't, so I don't care if it's from 1894.
- sandwichpants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I saw this in person at Siggraph LA 2001, and it was really neat. It is definitely not liquid metal as the silly title says, though you certainly get teh T1000 impression when you see it in person.
I do think this is loosely related to delphi's Magnaride suspension, though I'm not an expert on either one. - b0neman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I can't believe you guys don't know how old this is. 1991 T2. It almost killed my Governer in California. At first it was just a skinny white dude but later they put some on a babeorama. She finally got him even though he got her first.
- antipion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Old or not, that is one badass video. Dugg.
- eigh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://cosmos.hc.uec.ac.jp/protrudeflow/movies/wmv/profloD.wmv
- JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"***** you and ***** your blog. Direct link to the story this retard stole:
http://cosmos.hc.uec.ac.jp/protrudeflow/works/index.html"
You Got what you wanted... the little blogger's SQL is down. Hellooooo big hosting bill! - mcewen98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Museum of Science in Boston has a couple of interactive displays showing ferrofluids set up. It's pretty neat... except when you think about how many nasty little kids have stuck their hands into the rubber gloves that you can use to move it around.
- jaxun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's what I imagine T-1000 would have for a pet. Heeere kitty kitty.
- GeneralSpecific, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i'm going to concur with anztac and say that this stuff is exactly the same as United Nuclear... that site has some pretty sweet stuff.
- Pentarix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0video won't work for me :(
- PhilliesBlunt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Siggraph 2001, dugg!
- nightwang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This reminds me of gish.
- shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's okay. Seems to make only one kind of shape though.
- capn_caveman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Absolutely spectacular. Very Very cool.
- xLiKx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow, that is baddass, from 2001? who knew?
- CLIFFosakaJAPAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can see applications for this involving video conferencing. Laser Contour feedback results in 3D faces of the person you're talking to, which is projected by Low Tech Mirror (the Ferrofluid would be in reverse of course)
- madmathmatician, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0horray 4 science!! gave me goosebumps
DUG! - armagan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is too cool.
- TacitusBen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I saw this thing at Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria. It shoots waves at the liquid based on the ambient noise in the room, which would make it pretty cool at a party.
- TheRealDeal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Freakin' Awesome. You got my digg!
- CountZr0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I saw this at Siggraph 2001. It was very cool. I watched it for a looong time.
- ezkiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"That is wicked... NO way is it just "iron fillings in oil""
Sorry to dissapoint thats it. Check some of the links. - abbtech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fantastic video, I need some of this stuff!
