Underwater restaurant is the first of its kind (PICTURES)
bloggingwv.com — This innovative restaurant is the first of its kind in the world, and is part of a US $5 million re-build of Rangalifinolhu Island, one of the twin islands that make up Hilton Maldives Resort & Spa.

- paintballboi07, on 10/12/2007, -101/+7How do you get in?
- soulonaroll, on 10/12/2007, -5/+153Through a door?
- paintballboi07, on 10/12/2007, -74/+4So you have to scuba to get to the door?
- agrabob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+46RTFA: the pics show a doorway with stairs leading underwater.
Either those pictures don't show it all, or this thing is really small. It looks like 10-12 tables max from the pics. - miles01110, on 10/12/2007, -4/+67Pretty soon all the restaurants in the Maldives will be underwater...
- matt23423, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6This looks a little like what they're doing in Dubai.
http://ohcash.com/2007/02/02/underwater-complex/
Except that it's maybe 1000 times bigger :) - omatsei, on 10/12/2007, -9/+22@paintballboi07: Yes, you have to scuba to the door. That's after the 4 hour flight via helicopter, and 500-mile trip by canoe. Don't forget about the 1000 foot dive in the nuclear submarine either.

Unlike the restaurant, this digg story is not the first of its kind:

Yeah, but by that time we won't have to go that far or spend that much to eat underwater. We could just go to Florida, and perhaps get to see Disney World and Sea World for the price of one ticket. ;-) - ih8apple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@ agrabob
I would imagine that mass appeal is not exactly how they are making money. I dont think there will be more than 12 parties dining underwater at a given time. - paintballboi07, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0@agrabob: I did RTFA. Too bad I didn't have enough time to analyze the pic...
@ih8apple: You are correct. The meals cost anywhere from $187-$222 per person. - EerFoolWVU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice....love seeing WVU on the front page of Digg, and this is particularly cool to boot!
- PrometheuZ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Through 'soulonaroll's' back door.
- FelixdaaHack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What if someone passes gas...it would be like one large dutch oven
- Daiken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There's already an underwater restaurant in Dubai as well... Dubai has everything.
- zeus79, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11More info at snopes.com
http://www.snopes.com/photos/architecture/undersea.asp - benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I think it would be cool to have a place like this that was pressurized so you could scuba in through an opening in the middle of the dining floor.
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Yeah, but those pesky "wet floor" signs would sure get annoying...
Also, would they have a tank check room?
Of course, you can never let a SBD go queitly in a wet suit.... - Tyorant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@benitojuarez
What, in your best dinner suit? :P - SkinnerBox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I can totally see James Bond eating at that restaurant
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Yeah, but those pesky "wet floor" signs would sure get annoying...
- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34If you dont tip well you walk the plank.
- underthelinux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Do they serve sushi?
- Richggs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I hope they don't serve that with any leaks.
- rukki, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7you meant leeks, right?
- apocelo42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Do you get to pick which fish you want and then they send a diver out to get it?
- Richggs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not quite leak as in meaning a hole in a bucket, as a pun to leek the vegetable....
- TheGreyArea, on 10/12/2007, -3/+67That is so ***** cool. Everything should be underwater. EVERYTHING.
- Pertuberant, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Great, magnificent, I wish I had one restaurant like this one somewhere around...
- darkamster07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I think underwater aquarium would be an easy one
- cgc2020, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Definitely badass.
- ed89, on 10/12/2007, -21/+13Rumours abound that Cod Stewart will be singing at the opening.
- popltree2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17You are now officially on joke restriction.
- n8r0n, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22It looks like the server has flooded...
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Looks cool, but I wouldn't want to be in there with someone who's clausterphobic.
- snapneck, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Pretty cool. What if someone has to take a piss? Don't see a restroom in the pics
- Silentnite85, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The designer's included that in their heating plan. Just go in the water.
- conedude13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5People need to start using flickr more.
- mbaguy4000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10http://www.duggmirror.com/general_sciences/Underwater_restaurant_is_the_first_of_its_kind_PICTURES/
- Arnout109, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1really cool
- silverchrysalis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13i love how the tableware looks kinda organic, stingray-inspired or something. better than your average round plain plates.
have always wanted to go to the maldives anyhow. lovely - worldofsmut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Sorry. This restaurant is *not* the first of its kind by a long stretch.
There has been an amazing underwater restaurant in Israel, for several years in Eilat - http://www.redseastar.com/restaurant-en.php which also has nicer interior decor following the theme.- worldofsmut, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Considering the effort the developers would have gone to, I find it highly doubtful they didn't research the Israeli project. Even a Google search for "underwater restaurant" shows this place is not the first of its kind at all. As such, their bold claims that the Maldives restaurant is "the first-ever undersea restaurant in the world" and "the first of its kind in the world" are completely bogus. Israel did it years ago.
Don't get me started on Atlantis... - ADVIZR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That looks like a nice place too but being completely surrounded by water, like in these photos of Hilton Maldives Resort & Spa's Ithaa, seems much more enthralling. Those photos of the Red Sea Star could be mistaken for a restaurant surrounded by aquarium windows, though it's still cool/pretty (Dugg).
- toph2223, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2didn't kevin costner make a movie about this?
- youngandwise, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I think when they say "First of it's kind" they're referring to it being glass all the way around it and not just a few windows like the other restaurants that are underwater.
- jeffeb3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Israel restaurant is attatched to a building and only one side is exposed to the sea. The maldives one is surrounded. Not to mention way cooler because of it's size. You could hardly see anything from the Israel one.
- elhaf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Then there's Seaworld Orlando's underwater Shark restaurant.
http://www.seaworldorlando.com/SWF/res_sharksunderground.aspx
Yes, yes, not quite the same, but still a cool experience, I can tell you.
- worldofsmut, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Considering the effort the developers would have gone to, I find it highly doubtful they didn't research the Israeli project. Even a Google search for "underwater restaurant" shows this place is not the first of its kind at all. - adsoftheworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Soon restaurants that are above water will be the curiosity.
- hockey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Soon anything above water will be the curiosity.
- dstarh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1There is also an under water restaurant just off the coast of san fran although the name escapes me right now, Cool but not the first of it's kind
- harrier666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That I am aware of, you must be speaking about the Farallon. I may be wrong. But the Farallon is located in Union Square. Not exactly underwater. I'd direct you to their website, but it sucks.
- Dorepoll, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0This looks wicked cool. Man, I'm not into sea food, but how cool would it be to eat see food in there?
It's like eating a person's foot on the street. - Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Looks kinda dangerous. What happens if there is a fire (common enough at resturaunts)?
- hockey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30just open a window
- jeffeb3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I don't think the kitchen is in the bubble.
- michellerogers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0very cool!
- varish, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1its really wonderful, any diver will understand how cool its gonna be in there, but hilton needs to charge less, its damn expensive right now :(
also, like miles01110 said, we are all gonna be underwater soon if nothing is done abt global warming..hack, another one of those tsunamis will probably wipe us off.- smallestmills, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes, perhaps some locals can open up competition in a lesser known part of the ocean.
- darrickc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I'm pretty sure that this guy just scanned in the pictures from Popular Science magazine and copied the text into his blog, lame dood.
- abcohen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm waiting for the giant shark to come and knock in one of the windows....
dunn ... dun... dundun.... (think jaws theme here :P) - KarbonKopy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Am I the only one who remembers seeing this on digg like 2 times already?
- coolku, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Is it open to public yet?! Shoot it's in India... Oh well, fuxk it..
If it's open to public, this will BE the place I'll be proposing to my girlfriend in a few months.
Wish me luck, guys.- MusicMagi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Good luck man!
- llvllatrix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Please don't feed the animals.
- Bahimiron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Huh.
There's a spelling error in the description.
They accidently spell the word 'gimmicky' as 'innovative'. - Kruse, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Wow, it holds 6 tables...
- loganhid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3this is not the first of its kind. Ever seen the ones in Dubia
- rnwen2750, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dubai? Not trying to be a jerk, trying to track down some other ones for when I go on a trip later this year. :)
- Dacorr08, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0?? Waterworld....hmmm......Kevin Costner should do the opening of all underwater restaurants!
- EyewitBass, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1that's fine and all, until a shark swims by and craps out an arm or something while your enjoying the soup of the day
- pyromouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That would seriously make my day. I'd probably tip double.
- Hallik, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Buried for inaccurate, it is NOT the only kind in the world, the Burj al Arab has an underwater restaurant that is accessible by submarine.
- foradil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes! I knew my submarine would be useful one day.
- eitheehstsergei, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1i wana eat there so badddd
- rukki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You know, I could swear I saw a submersible restaurant in Port Lavaca or Galveston (dunna remember which) Texas. It only submerged at high tide though, It was directly attached to the jetty.
- albie315, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hilton website says:
* Children may dine at lunch at the restaurant's discretion.
what a hilarious rule. it's not like it's a rollercoaster ride. next thing they'll add is: must be taller than 4 feet and wear lifejacket over mandatory formal attire while dining. - manmademark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Proof that inner beauty > outter beauty :)
- badbox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah, because that's not ***** dangerous or anything.
You'll be singing a different tune when something snaps and you drown.- Yoggy0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0You think it's more dangerous than the Chunnel or the glass floor at the CN Tower? Get a grip dude.
- evanmyers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2My burger tastes salty.
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The cuisine is dedicated to the fine balance of western food items with a Maldivian flavor, the wine concept is equally exciting, offering diners the perfect opportunity to discover the wines of the prestigious Champagne house Louis Roederer."
That doesn't sound pretentious at all!- woojoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Mmmm... seafood
get it? sea? food? seafood? ha!
...
- woojoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Mmmm... seafood
- Ladycomet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man I want to dine with the fishes... my fighter fish eats meals with me, but thats not the same.
- blanktarget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They stole my idea! If only I had the money to build that lol.
- Dreamseeker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's great. I'd love to eat in a place like that. I don't really think it's the first of it's kind, but it's certainly someplace I'd like to eat at. Of course, looking at its size, and how many restaurants there are in the world like it (not many?) it would most likely be very expensive. I don't think I saw a price on the article besides the project price, I'll have to skim it again.
Though I will be showing this to my girlfriend; honeymoon dinner one night, perhaps? - sluggoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Pod six is jerks. Total suck pod.
- SoleRider, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1nice, but I prefer fresh air...
- nashpreds99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That underwater hotel, Hydropolis, has disaster flick written all over it.
- TiiPii47, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I digg this because it doesn't say "Most Amazing Restaurant EVER!!!!!!!"
plus it is pretty cool. - Yoggy0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why did they have to tint the glass blue-green to artifically enhance the way the water looks from inside the restaurant? Isn't having colourless glass good enough? Nobody thinks that real nature is good enough anymore, because every photograph you see in National Geographic or anywhere else has been photoshopped to death, so that when you see the real thing, you think it looks dull. I wish the designers of this restaurant hadn't ruined the glass by colouring it to look, in their opinion, "better".
- Disconnect, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've eaten at an underwater restaurant before. "World's first" my butt. http://forbesisland.com/
- rzrshrp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's pretty cool but can it really be called a restaurant? It's a submersible with tables. There doesn't seem to be any kitchen so the food would have to be prepared above water it seems. If the food isn't prepared on site, it would be like calling picnic tables at a park a restaurant.
