- Klarth, on 10/12/2007, -8/+34A note to the people digging me down:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_metal - Skizzot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Actually for a split second , I thought they were talking about black metal. I thought it was funny.
- SPLASTiK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Rochester? Everyone knows true black metal comes from Norway!
- jaym, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Here's your pic...
http://corporate.pukar.googlepages.com/corporate.black.v.JPG - Valthonis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11You don't need lasers... you just need Dëthkløk!!!
On a serious note, a sword made from this stuff would look awesome. :-) - zephc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12DEATH TO FALSE METAL!
(note my user icon is for once relevent) - nicku, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8 \m/
- squeevey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"If you got your hand in the way of the focused laser beam, even though it's only firing for a few femtoseconds, it would drill a hole through your skin," says Guo.
but then you could say you have a black hole in the palm of your hand. - patthew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This should prove to be one of the most brutal scientific innovations of the decade.
- radicaldementia, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14@klarth
hahaha I'm a black metal fan and that's the first thing I thought of - paulydawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4For some reason it reminded me of:
Chef: This éclair is over one million calories. Twenty-five pounds of butter per square inch. Covered with chocolate so dark that light cannot escape its surface. [The other restaurateurs lunge for the savoury picture] No, no, no! This is just a picture. But Homer Simpson will find the real thing both delicious and deadly.
Akira: Ah, yes, Death by Chocolate.
Chef:... and poison, I'll stick in some poison. - lulax3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No pic? wtf?
- affanjam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4http://www.duggmirror.com/general_sciences/Ultra_intense_laser_blast_creates_true_black_metal/
- cocytus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3blacker than the blackest black, times infinity!!
- ioral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3FTA (sample applications):
And turning a metal black without paint, scoring, or burning could easily lead to everyday uses such as replacing black paint on automobile trim, or presenting your spouse with a jet-black engagement ring.
What they failed to realize: Excellent material for the batsuit and the batmobile. woot! - nowisee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If this "black metal" is truly black, then it would be perfect for stealth planes.
- EdiciusTsaf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I want one of those!
I want True Black Metal Knives and Forks^^ - JayD16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21) Its a property of metal that makes it black.
2) Why do we need more forms of tattooing that are more permanent.
3) What part of intense light and skin sounds good? Tanning beds give you cancer for crying out loud! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If this is truly the "blackest black" and absorbs all types of radiation so readily, I imagine the metal could become superheated very fast. The heat property might give it yet more applications. If you are familiar with geothermal energy, there are a few rather obvious ones. Or perhaps a new way to grab solar energy by super heating a gigantic black plate? Then that plate could heat a liquid which turns a turbine to generate electricity. I'm no scientist, just rambling, but I think this could give us some very cool stuff. Oh yeah, and I too also thought this article was something about a music genre at first glance of the title.
- teken894, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Punks....
the article was in General Sciences....~~
It seems there's a new nanotech invention every day! What with all these new properties and findings. Soon we'll find femtoTechnology and picoTechnoology.....
Smaller and smaller...and smaller. - civdis24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sounds like the effect is only on the surface of the metal so any scratch would be quite visible.
- edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ignoring everything else, at the very least this would be a boon for physics teachers everywhere as a way to demonstrate black body radiation (yes, the same microgrooved property that allows it to absorb radiation so easily would also allow it to radiate easily).
- madchemst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, clothing made of this would absorb almost all light at night. I'm assuming if it's totally black (which it is) there would be no reflection either. This would making clothing made of this thin black metal the perfect camouflage at night.
- spookyttws, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It just sounds like they're burning metal without melting it.
- Vandelay797, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sounds pretty useless to me
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ever considered the energy slowly gets stored inside capacitors or something similar and then released in a short period of time?
- Onechrisn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I want a car that's black, and since Radar and laser light would just get eaten by the "paint" I could seed all over the place
- johnstar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1man I want my black gold grillz! lol
- hockyfight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"If you got your hand in the way of the focused laser beam, even though it's only firing for a few femtoseconds, it would drill a hole through your skin,"
I know multiple people have already quoted this line, but it's truely interesting that we are on the brink of being able to disintegrate each others' flesh with nothing but lasers. Forget the pointless black coloring of gold (who really wants black gold anyway?) if I were this company I'd be going straight to the Military. - crypticreign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ITZ SO KVLT!
- bgii2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"If you got your hand in the way of the focused laser beam, even though it's only firing for a few femtoseconds, it would drill a hole through your skin."
Yeah! Bring on the Laser Guns! - pointmeatthesky, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4This article is ***** kvlt.
- crackhaed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sounds pretty cool in the sense that if you made this very rippled and detailed texture on it, shined bright lights on it, it would just appear to be a two-dimensional silhouette.
It would suck to wear a shirt made of this on a sunny day. - JayD16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fool! This would be a conductor of heat energy. The bat suit is resistant to all forms of temperature based attacks be it Mr Freeze or Firefly...
[comicbook guy]Guh! Worst digg post ever [/comicbook guy] - 47f0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wish liberal arts majors would just freaking quite trying to write technical articles. For example, this process, "unleashes as much power as the entire grid of North America", but "can be powered by a simple wall outlet". Bad reporter, no cookie.
On the flip side, visible light is just part of the electromagnetic spectrum. How far can this technology be pushed? True radar-black, i.e. stealth metals? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0great article !!!!!!!!!!!!! awesome
- jebivuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Rumsfeld must be busting a nut, knowing he won't be around to take credit for the stealth crusie missle they will turn this stuff into.
This would make for one hell of a bunker buster.
A giant missle that obsorbs radiation and gets hotter the more rads you throw at it.
It would enter terminal mode unseen and hotter than a sabot round.
Ouch this one will hurt.
Imagine an ICBM you never see coming.
Opps looks like Iran had a meltdown.
Wink Wink Knudge Knudge. - JayD16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Couldn't this be used on heat sinks too? More surface area means more heat transfer.
Then again it says it 'traps' radiation. - jebivuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This sounds like the monolith in 2001 a space odesey.
I'm sorry Dave, but reality is stranger than fiction. - dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Finally they can re-release all the Spinal Tap back catalog. They took them out of circulation for years when they stopped making LP's. CD's were silver. The band decided that look was all wrong.
- yoritomo79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dugg, just because of the title.
- Norseman, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2http://www.duggmirror.com
Edit: Damn, beaten to it by a few seconds. - KyjL, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1+ digg, I thought the same damn thing :D
