- Moses, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes. I've seen those robots before. They are not smart. They aren't even close to being smart. They may have the behavioral level of an infant, but they have the intelligence of about a quarter of an ant.
MIT's robot, Cog is freakin' brilliant compared to these robots and is still VERY STUPID. Many robots seem smart, but that's only because it's easy to fake.
That, and these robots still don't incorporate any brain cells. Not yet. Although, I imagine robots will be stupid for a long time still to come. - Moses, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My God. That is so ridiculously fake, it's freakin' hilarious!
Minus one million diggs! - G-Force, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i figure we will have a a society with robots that do almost anything we can or more by 2030 think of the book by Isaac Asimov called I Robot. I would'nt doubt someone has technology this good hidden from public view hell the NSA brags that they have tech 20 years and more away from public view. People are ignorant to think that advanced technologies like this and other controversial tech doesn't exist. If you want to see what patents people have you would be amazed. I read in popular mechanics that indeed Lockheed Martin possessed the patent for passenger "UFO" technology.
We are farther ahead then what some of you think... - r©ain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This could be quite real.
I present you with The Project Organizations Homepage:
Take it with salt, but with 8 pages of publications they've earned their .edu in my opinion:

This is definitely worth watching. - ironbear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's real, and it's really creepy.
http://www.21stcentury.co.uk/robotics/nomad.asp - mindsinker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"controlled by the activity of its simulated brain cells"...Meh.
- MrZaiko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The beggining of the END?
- vertigoblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ill take tequila with his salt...
- Mark_H, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Are you kidding, gab00n??? This is Net India 123 we're talking about!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sounds a little far fetched. plus, no pics? what gives? what is with all these news stories with no pictures? i am gonna take it with a grain of salt.
- changelin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it's not long before the machines try to take over the world. just like my mother warned me.
- AminoSC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We have a LONG way to go.
- TechnoRabbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This 'new story' was on a 3 year old episode of Scientific American I watched on PBS just the other day. They wipe the robot's mind all the time so it can start fresh and it just uses its camera to find and indentify blocks with stripes from blocks with blobs, the stripes tasting 'good' because they conduct electricity and the blob ones tasting 'bad' because they don't. Soon it learns to just go after the ones with stripes.
- KCasier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is cool and 'smart', it might seem stupid (after all driving around and "tasting" bricks doesn't seem smart) but the actual process it uses (neural networks) and the way it learned to navigate, is much more complex (and therefore require much more "smart's") than they first appear.
You should never forget that true "stand alone" walking (that navigate dynamically through a room) robots came after that Deep Blue already beat Kasparov at chess (and basically long after that any average computer could beat average chess players) even though we consider walking an navigating by foot in a room to be much simpler activity as chess.
Secondly the fact that they could create a stable 20000 node network is in it's self impressive. - r©ain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Moses
Yes, but no.
Leaping to the assertions of machine men today is far fetched at best.
But the implications are astounding.
Today, you got barking whining fido.
Tomorrow, just what are you talking to... or dating... or being policed by?
The implications are radically different... About as different as a human programmed barking puppy and a fully self suffient Cyborg can be.
Self Sufficient as in Self Aware.
Self Programing -- like you and me, through experience and learning.
So, why are you making the comparison to barking puppybots?
Let's just wait and see. - larfus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://cercor.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/12/8/818
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah ...I can wright about stuff like that too...were are the photos in that case.
- DWatch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Time to start stashing away automatic weapons and MRE's in the Mexican desert, and dump any girlfriends with the name 'Sarah Connor'.
Just saying... - chickenrob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this link http://www.21stcentury.co.uk/robotics/nomad.asp submitted by ironbear refers to "simulated brain cells" I am guessing they have modeled their circuitry after the human brain, not a bunch of electrical probes coming out of a vat of gooey brain cells. Very misleading title.... no digg. People have been trying to get machins to emulate human thought for ever.
- lordTalus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cylons were created by man...
- dBLiSS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*sarcastic overtones* Yeah this can't be real! I'm too smart, I've heard of everything any scientists, grad/PHD students and Doctors are doing in the field of artificial intelligence and robotics! If this were true I'd have seen it on Hard copy! *end of sarcasm*
Anyway.. just annoyed by wankers. Looks interesting. - EnzanBlues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Though the title is misleading I do believe that this is worth a digg. Plus, of course it is stupid, only 20,000 simulated brain cells? Do any of you know how many an average human has? We have 100s of billions. That's right, billions. Compared to that, 20k is not very much, so of course the thing is going to be stupid.
- orangetiki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is anyone other then me concerned where they got the brain cells from? (JK)
- khigy777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0God bless you BitPopBoogie, let's educate the masses, if we can get them to tell the difference between the tasty blox and the nasty ones, maybe there's hope that one day they can tell the difference between a freakin' red light and a pedestrian....
- Braulio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Somebody call Will Smith!
- jtrowe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0CYBORGS!!!
AHHHH
RESISTANCE IS FUTILE!!! - jericho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm sure my boss has less than 20,000 brain cells. And while I wouldn't classify his as a highly functioning being, he can at least walk upright. Mostly.
- davidmonaghan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why don't you photo complainers read comments?
I AM interested in learning more about these "brain cells" they claim to be using. If they are in fact using a network of brain cells which is similar to a biological brain, it could help us learn more about today's biological brains, and aid in the design of better robot brains. This is the important part of the story, but apparently I AM the only one interested in learning rather than commenting on journalism styles and digg posts. - Arkz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sounds cool, but howcome all the robot articles never have pics!? what gives?
- sky_blue_eyes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0holy crap.
- sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+020 000? That's more than alot of people have.
- gab00n, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0That website is always posting bull ***** so don't trust it.
- Uthman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0fake. who the hell posted this
