Troops' body Parts May Be Regrown Using Stem Cells
news.com.au — THE Pentagon is joining with universities and hospitals in $US250 million ($267m) research to discover how to help wounded soldiers regenerate skin, muscle and even limbs from their own stem cells.

- silentboom, on 04/22/2008, -9/+4True, if I kick your door in and vacuum the rugs in your house would you love me? Of course to make the comparison equivalent, the vacuum would set the house on fire.
- Godlike, on 04/22/2008, -4/+3And make burn victims of your children while shredding your checkbook. Then you wouldn't be able to grow any food in your vast desert but hey, at least you'd have oil.
- sub67, on 04/22/2008, -2/+2Stupid government, I guess they never watched Casshern.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casshern - halobender, on 04/22/2008, -2/+6Definitely occupation but pillage? Only military and oil companies are making money and they are making money off the American citizens.
- bradspangler, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1But failing to successfully pillage wasn't part of the original intent -- or do you not remember the "kick their ass and take the gas" bumper stickers?
- speakinglish, on 04/22/2008, -7/+7Hey, I don't like the war anymore than you do, but I'll tell you something (this is my second time in Iraq): You bring us home too early, and you'll be having to use that same technology to regrow limbs for yourself and your kids when your "Resistance" (*read: Insurgency) makes its way across the Atlantic again. It was wrong for us to come here, but now we can't just leave.
- 11oops, on 04/22/2008, -4/+5What do you mean again? The last I heard, it's been proven without question that Iraq had no hand in 9/11.
- Godlike, on 04/22/2008, -3/+2WOW REALLY BECAUSE AMERICA HAD A HUGE HAND IN THE MURDER OF THOUSANDS OF IRAQIS. GUESS NOBODY CARES ABOUT THEM, AMERICAN LIVES MUST BE THE ONLY IMPORTANT ONES.
- 11oops, on 04/22/2008, -1/+2Umm, how the ***** is that relevant to my post? I say we should leave without fear that the Iraqi boogeymen will follow us home, and we certainly shouldn't draw the conclusion that because 'they' attacked us on 9/11 (note that in real-life and not speakinglish' twisted mind, they doesn't equal Iraqis, but rather Saudis) they'll 'do it again'.
Quite frankly, the only way to quell the violence is to leave -- even if there is a temporary increase immediately after our departure, it will only be temporary. However, if we choose to stay, that violence will be permanent. - Godlike, on 04/22/2008, -1/+2Maybe it doesnt apply to everyone but if you are an Iraqi you see America as imperialistic terrorists the same as we accused Saddam and his Ilk of being. We are JUST AS BAD. Our government lied to start a war that would otherwise not have happened; they lied so that they could go over there and kill Iraqis for oil - How can you not see this?
I am not defending terrorists, believe me I am not, but IF YOU ARE AN IRAQI THEN AMERICANS ARE THE TERRORISTS.
Two sides to the issue. Two perspectives. Too bad almost every single American is so full of government dogma that they will never understand that we had NO RIGHT TO BE THERE AT ALL EVER FOR ANY REASON and that WE are the terrible ones.
- 11oops, on 04/22/2008, -1/+2Umm, how the ***** is that relevant to my post? - halobender, on 04/22/2008, -3/+4Or stupidity, bury me, but once you sign up with the military they own your ass. They can make you do anything regardless of how just it is. The only good thing about it seems to be that you can retire at 40.
- speakinglish, on 04/23/2008, -1/+1halo, questions on my intelligence aside, how is this comment at all relevant to the conversation? I'm not going to bury you; you have a right to your opinion.
- halobender, on 04/22/2008, -3/+4Or stupidity, bury me, but once you sign up with the military they own your ass. They can make you do anything regardless of how just it is. The only good thing about it seems to be that you can retire at 40.
- sodade, on 04/22/2008, -5/+6So you are saying that you are protecting us by killing the resistance? Why don't you warmakers get that the more people you kill, the more potential terrorists you create? Why is this so ***** hard to grok? I'd rather you be fighting them here than there because then we would be in the right and the whole ***** world would be on our side.
- sodade, on 04/22/2008, -2/+2Yep - there they go again. Digg it down because you can't ***** answer the question.
- PolishLogic, on 04/22/2008, -2/+4Tough to effectively fight a group who's best tactic is to kill you by killing themselves, too. Based on that tactic, I'd rather see them doing it over there, rather than in our farmer's markets, malls, restaurants. Then again, too each their own, I guess.
Considering there's certainly a decent amount of people on Digg would love nothing more than to read about a rash of bombings at various malls in our country, just so they could throw out the same old tired "we totally deserve this, and a lot more of it" rhetoric.- 11oops, on 04/22/2008, -2/+1Although not literally, we are also killing ourselves to kill them. We have killed our freedoms, our economy, our national defenses, our morale, as well as 3,000+ of our troops.
- sodade, on 04/22/2008, -3/+2Fighting a group whose best retaliatory tactic is suicide is like a grown man kicking the ***** out of a retarded kid. All it does is make you look dumber than a retard.
If some Iraqis came to the US and bombed a bunch of malls - no question I would say we deserved it, but that is a world apart from wanting it to happen. In fact, I don't want it, or anything like it to happen. Not because I am afraid of getting blown up, but because I am afraid of the furthering of the police state in America. - speakinglish, on 04/23/2008, -0/+0sodade, I refuse to bury a single comment. I'm also out here to help people, not kill them. Believe it or not, there are people who don't enjoy living in fear of militiamen coming to their house and beheading their brothers and sons. Yes, we've made our mistakes. No, we shouldn't have started this war. But now that we're here, the worst thing we can do is leave suddenly.
- K4ot1K, on 04/22/2008, -5/+1Once again, truth scares people. They would never go there themselves, let alone give something back to their "evil" country. But yet it is too nice here for them to move somewhere else. If you love your freedom to bash your government and your country, thank a soldier!
- sodade, on 04/22/2008, -1/+2Name one instance since 1945 where the American military did something that makes Americans more free.
- K4ot1K, on 04/22/2008, -2/+1Well, The Cold War. But with your way of thinking, why 1945? Did we make ourselves free in WWII? or in WWI? Weren't we already free during those? We were not under anyones control, so in that theory, we should have never gotten into those. As well as Korea, As prosperous as South Korea is, they would have done much better if they were under North Korea's rule, don't ya think? In fact with that line of thinking, anything we have done since the Revolutionary War has been useless, because it did not directly affect our "Freedom". Makes sense don't it?
- 11oops, on 04/22/2008, -1/+2The Cold War? Is that you McCarthy? I don't recall any imminent threat of being overrun by communists.... And in WWII, if we allowed Germany to gain rule of Europe, and Japan to gain rule of the entire S. Pacific then it would have only been a matter of time before they came at us from both shores.
- K4ot1K, on 04/22/2008, -1/+0Read the question again. During WWII we were still free. Our going in to Europe did not make us "more free". Waiting till Germany, and Japan attacked and attempted to take us over would have put us in the position to make us "more free". Japan attacked us, Muslim Exteremists attacked us. We had the same response both times. But according to sodade, we should not have attacked back either time. We were still free at both time periods. Neither attacking Japan, nor attacking Exteremists made us "more free". So in his line of argument, no military action we have taken since the Revolutionary War was justifed. Because none of them has directly made us "more free".
- sodade, on 04/22/2008, -1/+2Name one instance since 1945 where the American military did something that makes Americans more free.
- speakinglish, on 04/23/2008, -0/+0Wow, OK...I didn't mean that Iraq had anything to do with 9/11. I think we've all seen there's no evidence of that. What I DID mean was that Al Qaeda (and other groups, Jaysh Al Mahdi from the Shia side, for example) now has a larger recruiting base and a more or less lawless territory to operate from. If we left now, the place would become completely destabilized and would certainly be a haven for terrorists.
- Noods, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1So in other words, we can never leave?
- 11oops, on 04/22/2008, -4/+5What do you mean again? The last I heard, it's been proven without question that Iraq had no hand in 9/11.
- genericcynic, on 04/22/2008, -0/+0What, and miss the health benefits this research will bring?? :-)
- xxTazxx, on 04/22/2008, -1/+1The Resistance is known, at least to the world media, as Terrorists.
As they say, one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.
This applies to women as well.- Noods, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1They aren't people. They are "insurgents". And as long as you remember that doublespeak, it doesn't matter how many you kill or how long you occupy their country.
- PolishLogic, on 04/22/2008, -3/+2But, if we do that, what will you have to bitch about?
Never mind, I'm sure you'll find something. Baby seal clubbing, perhaps? Or maybe attacking the rich because they make more money than you?
- silentboom, on 04/22/2008, -9/+4True, if I kick your door in and vacuum the rugs in your house would you love me? Of course to make the comparison equivalent, the vacuum would set the house on fire.

The intention of regenerating limbs is good, but what will be the (military) intention in 20 years time? This technology could potentially be used to create humans who have been specially modified for combat roles. An extra arm for weapons... extra eyes... more legs for speed...keep going and you start churning out clones armies.- ElAssoWipo, on 04/22/2008, -2/+5Robots will be a lot cheaper by then.
And they've been testing the superhuman soldier idea for decades already. Previouslywith drugs. Now the main focus is on a exoskeleton.

- Tiphys, on 04/22/2008, -0/+9But should the possibility of abuse stop us from researching ways to help people? We Humans will pretty much make a weapon out of anything; but it shouldn't prevent us from improving our world.
The idea of combat engineered Humans is pretty unnerving though.- hachijuhachi, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1The problem is that the all-too-powerful religious right sees the words "abortion" or "fetus" associated with anything, and they loose it. The amount of pull these people have in the American Politic is alarming. Not only are they reactionary and powerful, they have legions of followers who will do as they're told without consideration.
With the stem cell issue, there are other ways to get stem cells, but the funding for the research will be denied as long as the ultra-conservatives hold as much power as they do. It doesn't matter that the research sould lead to unprecedented advances in medicine, and it doesn't matter that fetuses will be available no matter what, they don't want those fetuses to bring about any positive, because it will compromise their position, and it will cause some of their sheeple to leave the flock, at least on this issue.
/Rant over.

- Frylocke, on 04/22/2008, -2/+11This has already been done. There is even a video out on the web that shows the process. A man lost the tip of his index finger in a model plane accident, and with the help of a powder (can't recall the specifics of the powder), it created a scaffold for the bone and tissue to grow on. The man got the tip of his finger back with full use. The same video also shows how organs can be printed with a standard inkjet printer using stem cells and a solution made from pig bladder. Oh, and the video is from 2003! Think about 5 more years of research on this technology.

- pettdog78, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1War contributions aside this technology actually would benefit many people all over the world. It's based on the concept of a salamander being able to regrow it's limbs when lost and so has a valid theory in nature. Scientists actually found that all mammals had the ability to regrow limbs, it's just that after birth we lost this ability where as salamanders manage to keep it. So the theory is sound, it will just take abit of time and money to figure out how to re-enable the genes that prompt regrowth. We could see people regrowing limbs with the help of science in five to ten years possibly. Very neat times...
- BigManOnCampus, on 04/22/2008, -0/+4Too bad they can't apply this to the brainpower lost by sold-out politicians.
- thewump, on 04/22/2008, -0/+3Well if they can regrow Mr Garrisons penis I guess anything's possible
- atbnet, on 04/22/2008, -1/+4Scientist: Pres. Bush we are close to growing vital organs with stem cells to help all the people who need organ transplants, we just need your approval.
Bush: No it is immoral, think about all the babies you are going to kill.
Scientist: Well we can also grow back the limbs of soldiers so they don't have any excuse for another tour in Iraq.
Bush: Mission Accomplished! - vornan19, on 04/22/2008, -2/+2Won't using stem cells piss off King George?
- gyronic, on 04/22/2008, -2/+2Why not just Iraqis for spare parts?? Oh never mind they are brown, brown is not in fashion in the US!!
- SabrinaHeaven, on 04/22/2008, -1/+2Modern plastic surgery was a direct result of WWI. This war, if we allow it to continue, may be the direct cause of our most advanced medical technologies. We need this death and dismemberment.
- oboredone, on 04/22/2008, -0/+3First stem cells. Next fire coming out of your fingertips and wearing bunny masks.

- RaiderWolf, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2Your shift key is wrong.
- kenrayd, on 04/22/2008, -0/+0What a lot of trouble when they can just wait until the resurrection when they not only can get all their parts back but they also will never get harmed again.
- Joe11Blue, on 04/22/2008, -0/+0Only 250m USD!? What the heck, why spend money on repairing, and rebuilding already trained and experienced troops. Gee, I wonder what's worth more.... A fresh out of basic AIT Joe, or some combat experienced trooper.... Maybe this should have more funding Generals?
- Pinhedd, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1Maybe they'll help bush grow some balls
- elijahalcantara, on 04/22/2008, -2/+4I CAN HAS BODEH PARTS?
- FecalHurler, on 04/22/2008, -1/+2Well at least the war is good for something.
- zspade, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1it's better than the alternative of absolutely nothing, huh?
- invisiblehat, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1This sounds like a decent premise for a horror film.
- gametavern, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1stem cells can cure the world... just sprinkle them on your wounds for maximum healing!
- PinkFloydFan, on 04/22/2008, -1/+1I think the REAL question at hand is whether or not they can be used to generate NEW body parts. Imagine the US soldier with four arms, two heads, and four feet. Twice the feet, twice the ass kicking.
- JedicodeWarrior, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2Pity though, stem cell research has all but been beaten down by our commander-in-theif.
- tuzziel, on 04/22/2008, -1/+1#1 research that needs funding is this,
but even in this thread 80% people don't get it. If you can regrow organs you can pretty much eliminate most of the diseases.
Lung, kidney cancer? Here goes your new kidney. etc.
No wonder that gov people prefer other funding like those crazy new nuclear missile silos and such, stupidity prevails. - Shaman760, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1Oh NOW they want to let it be used. ***** them and the RIAA!
- cronian, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1Great, so now losing a limb may not be enough to be taken out of combat. They can just grow you a new limb, and then stop-loss your ass back to Iraq.
- sonaboy, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1Oh watch - NOW the neo-cons who have been crying about government funded stem cell research will now begin displaying their "patriotism" for THIS government funded research. Guaranteed. Nice flip flop.
- earthceltic, on 04/22/2008, -1/+1Why does this feel like the end of Akira every time I hear about it? http://www.bbakira.co.uk/stills/tetsuo/tet43.jpg

- Georgy, on 04/22/2008, -2/+1Nice to see digg has already put a negative spin on this even when the government is trying to do something beneficial for us.
- ianconley, on 04/22/2008, -1/+1hahahahahaha. This is tantamount to the right saying "Our staying in Iraq is going to stop abortion!" Complete toying with emotions for the sake of a flailing, snake-oil based bio-tech industry.
- Aiae, on 04/22/2008, -1/+0http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/view/id/142. Educate yourself before you run your ignorant ***** mouth. Regrowing body parts from your own stem cells is going to be a reality. This is not science fiction, it is science fact. You'll shut the ***** up in a decade. To all those ***** retards calling people "hypocrites" there's no ***** hypocrisy, there is a difference between "YOUR OWN STEM CELLS" WHICH IS EVEN IN THE SUMMARY OF THE ***** ARTICLE and embryonic stem cells. Jesus ***** Christ, learn to read.
- ianconley, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1ohhh yeah! Just like hoverboards! Instead of pumping money into this fictitious science of vanity, why don't we focus on real issues? Stem cells aren't magic. Sorry. Wait, maybe you'd understand it better if i said " Stem cells ARENT ***** MAGIC, you HYPOCRITE ***** *****!" Douche.
