I'm gonna specifically digg this story just b/c I am so sick of cry babies asking people to digg the same story that was submitted a little earlier. Get it through your head, nobody cares that it's a dupe! Get a life.... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Breaking News:
Pure water in a petri dish kills brain cells.
In other news, brain cells left in a petri dish on top of a tv set died after several hours along with brain cells placed on top of a cell phone, and the brain cells used to read this Reuters article via CNN thanks for nothing. - attila, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Isn't this in the "too much of anything is bad for you" category? Thanks for the heads-up though. I have some testosterone to donate, I'm filled to capacity. This is a good discovery though, I guess lowering testosterone levels will help offset some of these diseases.
- zgregoryg, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17No wonder techies are pencil neck geeks! LOL!
- hollowmedia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The study is invitro. It's hard to establish the validity of this study, It hasn't been repeated or corroborated, it's in a closed system, and there are no animal models. The truth is that our bodies are a lot more complex and a cell in a petri dish with testosterone thrown at them doesn't really tell you much. Can testosterone even have access to your brain? If so, at what levels does it end up in up there? Once there, are there other factors that counteract this apoptotic effect? Without more information, this is useless.
-rene - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8That's BS dude, when I was in school I always did better on exams after sex (I'm talking less than 30 min after sex). One feels relaxed and calm. If you studied then you should do awesome as hell on an exam.
Now if you haven't had sex in the past hour or two then you are too busy thinking about the hot chick in the next row to bother thinking about the exam in front of you. - bram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5No wonder Floyd Landis can't remember taking any performance enhancing drugs!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"...may help explain why steroid abuse can cause behavior changes such as aggressiveness and suicidal tendencies."
That line of the article is totally absurd and the author should be shot! Death of brain cells has NOTHING to do with (the temporary) aggressiveness and depression associated with male steroids. The depression only comes after the testosterone is wearing off and turning into estrogen by the body. Excess estrogen will cause suicidal tendencies, it also causes bitch *****. If you take steroids without proper post cycle therapy you will end up depressed, with bitch *****, and a bald spot (of course it all depends on the person).
Spreading FUD about testosterone is NOT cool. Read her actual paper, she says that inside the body it doesn't act the same way as in a petri dish.
If testosterone was properly studied as it should be then many medical applications can be developed. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6monomyth is living proof that testesterone does, in fact, kill brain cells.
/digged - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+13Trying to draw direct conclusions from this in vitro study to humans is absurd. No one is going to argue that Arnold Schwarzenegger is an idiot (political ideology aside, he went from a 'meathead' austrian immigrant to a multi-multi-millionaire who holds the highest political office his citizenship allows).
Steroid use is NOT dangerous, nor does it have any long term deleterious effects when used intelligently. By this i mean someone who has been medically trained and is aware of how various steroids affect the human body. Using any drug in an ignorant fashion is dangerous. Aspirin kills more people every year than steroids do. Use it in the proper way, though, and its perfectly safe.
The only reason steroids have such a bad wrap is that people use them to cheat. This is one thing i dont agree with, since secretly using any performance-enhancing drugs is unfair to other competitors, as theyre then forced to use a drug they may not want to simply to remain competetive. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You make absolutely no sense... lay off the crack dude.
- porkstacker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wow, and all this time I wondered why football players are such *****. Now I find out the answer ought have been obvious.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Without more information, this is useless."
I totally agree, she says herself in her paper
"Elevated testosterone concentrations increase cell death, and this effect was abolished in the presence of either inhibitors of caspases or the inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor (InsP3R)-mediated Ca2+ release."
Why does the media insist on spreading FUD about male steroids? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yes, steroids pass through nearly all cell membranes "like a knife through butter".
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Excuse me, but the negative press about male steroid abuse is NOT FUD, people! Try having a few of these juiced-up apes as your co-workers or neighbors - abusers of this line of drugs are comparable to a PCP addict in a homicidal rage. I've had too many body-Nazis snap on my shift and in my neighborhood to merely brush steroids off as harmless. That's not to jump on an anti-drug bandwagon and declare all use bad - like many on here have said, too much of anything is bad for you.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Let me give a bit of advice to digg users...
1. Get on a path to riches, as a geek this shouldn't be hard.
2. Begin to workout at a gym (research how to do every exercise first and stop caring that you look currently like a scrawny runt or a huge fat guy). Work your ass off until you are totally exhausted, pass out, or puke then continue to work your ass off.
3. Correct you diet and try to care about you appearance.
4. Lose the glasses! Try either contacts or at least get better looking glasses.
5. After a few years buy a Porchse (Carrera GT at least) and wear only expensive clothes
6. If you don't already have someone, then date a model. You have money, you look good, and drive a nice car... do they care about anything else?
7. Don't go bald, if your model girlfriend/wife doesn't work out or becomes a junkie then you need to still be able to get yourself a younger hotter model.
8. Try not to be a dick to youger aspiring geeks, remember that you were once a geek and will always be a geek at heart. - hurfydurfur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Drink too much Orange Juice and the pigment shows up in your skin (I have seen this). Drink too much water and your blood sugar goes to pot (coma). Take in too much oxygen and you pass out or your cells start dying. Too much vitamin A weakens your bones. Too much vitamin B6 causes nerve damage. Too much vitamin C causes nausea and copper build up. Too much vitamin D causes kidney stones. Too much vitamin E is hard on your heart.
Too much of anything is bad ... thus, the "too much" part. - nightsweat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4ZOG hate article! ZOG Angry! ZOG SMASH ARTICLE!!!!
- hollowmedia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"The depression only comes after the testosterone is wearing off and turning into estrogen by the body."
Not necessarily. Drugs like trenbolone (acetate/enanthate/etc.) can cause severe mood swings in some. Halostein is another known offender, which causes anger and depression. But, generally speaking - standard testosterone will follow your guideline.
"If you take steroids without proper post cycle therapy you will end up depressed, with bitch *****, and a bald spot (of course it all depends on the person)."
Those are mainly the result of taking steroids without the proper precautions during the cycle. An anti-aromatase (arimidex) and perhaps some DHT blockers (finasteride) can cut down on those sides immensely for most. - MacGyver2210, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think 'too much' in this case refers to a naturally-occurring dose of Testosterone.
Like someone said down below, I think this clearly explains the stereotype of 'dumb jock'.
Also, is there even a proven correlation between loss of brain cells and intelligence levels? - mesoed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Ha! Lends credence to the Sinfield episode of old when George swore off sex and got really smart.
- icantdrawanime, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Actually, the article says too much estrogen is not a bad thing. Guys just get screwed for screwing around. I guess this explains the idea that women do better after sex and men do worse when it comes to exams and competitions...
- yabos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@icantdrawanime
Test levels in men go down for a few hours after sexual activity but return within a few hours. - The_Dude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Explains why high school jocks are so dumb! (the real dumb ones, not the scholar athletes)
And why men die younger than women. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Both Tren and Halostein is not testosterone (although they may be derivatives I don't think they convert to estrogen) as far as I know... they are steroids, yes, but not test.
That reminds me I need to try and get some... - SteelChicken, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4someone named billyboobs seemes to know alot about bitch *****.
just playin! - Hamsterpotpies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great time to be a male...
- mv10, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5no wonder musclemen are so dumb
- lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One thing that digg users will never have to worry about!

PS, I've never had a 'roid user come after me. No sand on my face. But when one takes off after a coworker who is a female 5'5" in her 70's, and he's picking up a cart and hucking it at her, yes, I'll step in. ***** sue me. - Yage2006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It all makes perfect sense now :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Fortunately, I'm not genetically prone to gynecomastia. (lucky me!)
- NotSoBright, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Can testosterone even get inside the blood brain barrier?
- mhockey14221, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I bet its more to do with too much beer and concussions that really do us in...
- SteelChicken, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Not to mention they say nothing of the amount tested. 5times? 20times? 1000times normal?
Just enough info to get man-haters enough ammo to fire a few shots. - DaFunk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I have to agree. Too much of *anything* is bad for you. Take for instance Ruby Red Squirt. A glass or two a day is probably okay. 8 liters a day for several months....not so good.

- johngaltisme, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Insert 'Chuck Norris roundhouse kick kills all your brain cells' joke here

Give him a break this time. For the first time ever, someone complaining about a dupe DIDN'T post a link to an earlier story that THEY posted. The original was submitted by someone other than BloodJunkie.
Amazing... - SirFoxx, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Sounds like someone has gotten a little too much sand kicked in their face. Comparing a steroid user(I know you used "abuser" but it sounds like you don't differentiate between the two) to PCP addict is the most asinine statement I've seen in a while. When you actually know something factual about this subject, then comment. It will make you look less stupid. Just some friendly advice.
- cool4u2view, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1deleted
- monomyth, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1This would explain a lot. But I do not believe it is true for the same reason.
- Tiabin, on 10/12/2007, -38/+13AllenS: BloodJunkie is simply trying to preserve the quality of digg. Not only that, but he's trying to assure people who deserve front pages get front pages. You're a low quality person (I mean that character-wise).
