I'll be the judge of that - p9s50W5k4GUD2c6, on 10/12/2007, -9/+111LOL
Mmmm dude? "Methanol is not suitable for human consumption"
Sorry to burst your 463 billion kilometres alcoholic bubble. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -20/+75I knew there was a reason Bush was so interested in space travel.
- MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -1/+32Not suitible for human consumption, but they never said anything about ALIENS.
We come in peace earthlings.. *barf* oh bro, I'm so wasted.... - rationalist, on 10/12/2007, -5/+36"And God Said,
'Let there be Lite.
...Bud Lite'" - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -7/+33Great Headline. Dugg for that. Now I'm going to read the article.
I wonder if that cloud will cause the Milky Way to go home and beat Mrs. Milky Way and Milky Way Jr. - eatasandwich, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23This explains why I woke up covered in vomit and orbiting Neptune on Saturday morning.
- ebob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21I would go beyond just saying that methanol is not suitable for human consumption. It is LETHAL. Just one sip of this stuff will kill you! Methanol can also be absorbed through the skin and cause blindness. It is impossible to overemphasize just how deadly it can be. That being said, it does have its uses in the laboratory, but it is handled with extreme care.
- Mousse, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23In chemistry, an alcohol is any compound that has a hydroxyl (OH) group. The alcohol we consume in beverage is called ethanol. Methanol, on the other hand, is dangerous for consumption.
- kalisphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Well, that sounds better than what was orbiting Uranus the night before ;)
- RumaruDrathas, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18Am I the only one amused that the article had to clearly state that "Methanol is not suitable for human consumption" ???
They musta figured out that Diggers like us was on the way or something... - burke, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16@loker:
yeah, that and it's methane, not methanol. - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12My and my fellow Irishmen are suiting up now!
- mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I'm sure a bunch of us have already experienced many an alcohol cloud here on earth.
- tuna1, on 10/12/2007, -8/+20Don't be a buzz kill.
- soogy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11100mL of methanol, when drunk (no pun intended), is considered lethal. So, let's all have 99mL shots and get smashed.
- Wamzlee, on 10/12/2007, -12/+23I think he was playing on words, puns if you will.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Dupe stories are fine. It's not my fault if the loser who posted it first couldn't come up with a catchy headline. Lighten up. There have been lots of dupe stories that I have seen because someone decided to repost and I'm glad they did because someone wasted their uncreative mind the first time it was posted.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"My and my"? It think you guys have had enough already...;P
- ChileanGoD, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Creating headlines is an art of its own.
- craigtheguru, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Just what Bender always wished for!
- mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13...as well as formed our own primordial gas!
- LemonHerb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7How exactly are alcohol clouds on Jupiter the same as alcohol clouds in space? Maybe, you could read the article?
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -10/+17Pointing out something is a dupe is not useful and does not contribute in any way to the conversation. Do you really think 200 people are going to report this as a dupe, undigg this post and digg the original because he pointed out that this was a dupe?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7If it tastes like Jagermiester, I'll volunteer for astronaut duty.
- Osiriscky3, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14have you been touched by his alcoholic apendages?
- buck09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6ebob: I would go beyond just saying that methanol is not suitable for human consumption. It is LETHAL.
Well, now that we've figured out that there is a God, would this be proof that he's a Baptist too? - dargon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Hangovers are also partially caused by dehydration of your brain. Drink a rather large glass of water right before you goto sleep and you won't feel NEARLY as bad the next day. Yes, you'll probably piss like a race horse when you wake up but that just a minor thing unless you don't know how to exercise bladder control ;)
- ollywompus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"Well, now that we've figured out that there is a God, would this be proof that he's a Baptist too?"
Hi, my name is Yahweh, and I'm an alcoholic... my last drink was 2 billion, 745 years ago... it's hard, but getting easier millennia by millennia.
-olly - soogy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"I hate to rain on your parade here, guys, but Methanol (CH3OH) causes blidness in non-lethal doses. Ethanol is the shiznit you're after."
So what? It's not that hard to remove the M from methanol. - joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8We need to build a really long straw and then we can suck it all down for use as fuel!
- JohnConnor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@rationalist,
Did you know that Miller Brewing Company copywrited the word "Lite" for Lite Beer, which is why Busch has to use Bud Light, and not Lite. I just wanted to clear up your "Let there be Bud Lite" comment. Obviously you don't pollute your body with Alchohol as much as some of us, or these facts would be known. - mrfish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Not suitable for human consumption? Were they expecting one of us to get a spaceship and a straw to go out there and chug it down? Granted I know it's available on Earth, but really, who's that dumb?"
Well it is ABC news. The Budweiser of news channels. - LemonHerb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Ugly people rejoice!
- Mousse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yes, I should've clarified. Alcohols are organic compounds that have a carbon backbone (a chain of carbon atoms bonded to hydrogen atoms), they just happen to replace one or more of those hydrogen atoms for hydroxyl groups.
- ollywompus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes, because that's what we're all suggesting. Thanks so much for disproving the theory that
alcohol in space = supreme being
We've all been wrestling with that question for a while now, but you've effectively answered any questions we may have had.
You sir, are my hero.
-olly - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3oh i remember that night
new years eve three years ago
3 hours of projectile vomitting
at a speed matching
the escape velocity of the sun..
swore i would never drink again..
if this comment is blurry it is cause i am drunk now. - ollywompus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Well it is ABC news. The Budweiser of news channels."
So if ABC is the Bud of news, can someone point me in the direction of the 'Pabst' of news?
Thanks, I'll be waiting for the info.
-olly - AUGTRON, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Don't bases have hydroxyls (OH) too?
But great title anyways. - Jetfire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can see Friday's Headline now "Animal House develops Faster than Light engine". They%u2019re on their way now to the huge Alcohol Cloud in space. They never finished the Story to find out human can't drink it but maybe green alien woman can. Toga Toga Toga
- dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5 Trace amounts of methanol in the ethanol of drinks is converted into formaldehyde by your liver and that causes a hangover.
- Sebastian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Polish People Rejoice !
- mwace, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I hate to rain on your parade here, guys, but Methanol (CH3OH) causes blidness in non-lethal doses. Ethanol is the shiznit you're after.
- MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5They call it White Lightening!
- Nichevo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Alcohols have a covalent bond between the hydroxyl and the carbon chain. Having a hydroxyl isn't the best definition for a base.
- cemsity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3yes and no. it is a base if paired with a metal, alcohol if organic(as in carbon) molecule
- CingleMolt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If that cloud collides with the Milky Way we can throw in some Kahlua and we'll have a nice White Russian! Someone call Dr. Tiki!
- etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is further proof that NASA needs to start work on an extra long straw.
- AReef, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Since the cloud is made up of alcohol that cannot be consumed by humans, it proves that there is a God, only that God is a woman!
- krazykit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, methanol IS an alcohol, just not the beverage you're familiar with. In fact, isopropanol is an alcohol, as is butanol. Just because it's not ethanol doesn't mean it's not alcohol. Alcohol is simply a term describing certain chemical properties. You just don't know because you didn't bother checking your facts.
