- SaintDogbert, on 05/22/2008, -3/+136This blogger has taken an interesting story about brain research and turned it into a OFMG! New Date Rape Drug! story. There's nothing in there about how many people in the sample group changed their behavior. Nothing about their willingness to trust "bad" people outside of a lab situation. Nothing about how long the effects lasted. Nothing about whether they changed their minds as the drug wore off.
This story is a fine example of a blogger misrepresenting science - lucidguru, on 05/22/2008, -3/+60Hmm... works with a nasal spray? So potentially they could spray this stuff into the air? Sounds like big business has just found their drug.
- blate, on 05/22/2008, -2/+56I haven't given you oxytocin....trust me.
- daniel, on 05/22/2008, -5/+45aka Rape for Dummies
- joeTaco, on 05/22/2008, -2/+39If anyone can explain to me a proper reason researchers are allowed to experiment with drugs like this but not MDMA or LSD, they get a huge cookie.
- mikephimikephi, on 05/22/2008, -0/+35You haven't given me oxytocin
- enclaved, on 05/22/2008, -1/+25Then every instance of drunken sex in the history of alcohol has been rape? We should start prosecuting everyone involved.
- inactive, on 05/22/2008, -0/+19Does the pope ***** in the woods?
- greatgatsbyII, on 05/22/2008, -1/+16Thank you sir! I've seen the error in my ways.
- thescimitar, on 05/22/2008, -0/+14Good call. The fear factor of this "story" came in the last paragraph of editorializing by the author. Typical fear mongering by unethical "reporters".
- dOOBiEx213, on 05/22/2008, -3/+17It's just a pimple...trust me.
- simg, on 05/22/2008, -0/+12Ironically, oxytocin is released in the body after sex. oxytocin is apparently significant in bonding in couples. By dropping oxytocin bombs, you would literally be "making love, not war" ...
- Whadabala, on 05/22/2008, -1/+13OFMG?
Oh ***** my god?
?????????????????????? - Cpt0bvius, on 05/22/2008, -3/+15Its bad, but not even close to scopolamine, also called Devil's Breath... People have given away all of their belongings calmly after a suggestion when on the stuff. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8Z6lpZD3MA
- Hangly, on 05/22/2008, -7/+19Oxytocin is a mammalian hormone that also acts as a neurotransmitter in the brain.
In humans, oxytocin is thought to be released during hugging, touching, and ORGASM in both sexes. In the brain, oxytocin is involved in social recognition and bonding, and may be involved in the formation of trust between people and generosity.

But suuure, DIGG ME DOWN. - BryanG412, on 05/22/2008, -0/+11It will run Crysis...trust me
- stinger666, on 05/22/2008, -3/+13In other news, a digger finally gets laid
- wstrinz, on 05/22/2008, -3/+13Problem is you need to spray it right in the nose. I doubt just spraying some in the air would work well, and I bet it would get broken down in the digestive tract/not pass the blood brain barrier if it was taken orally. Its good we don't have a socially acceptable drug that important people use everyday which makes us more suggestible.
Oh wait, never mind:http://www.abc.net.au/science/news/stories/s162738 ... - funkymoose, on 05/22/2008, -3/+12I wonder if the CIA would use this.
- EdgeOfEpsilon, on 05/22/2008, -0/+9And, of course, he completely ignores the fact that you can't slip oxytocin into a drink and expect it to do anything. It has to be taken nasally or intravenously.
- ligyron, on 05/22/2008, -0/+9That was a disturbing comment to read
- kamikaze87, on 05/22/2008, -0/+9I kinda like it, has a nice ring to it.
- charlietuna, on 05/22/2008, -1/+9Your cogent rhetoric has won me over as well sir.
- EdgeOfEpsilon, on 05/22/2008, -0/+8no, because oxytocin is broken down in the stomach. The author of TFA is stupid.
So, don't accept nasal sprays or IVs from random people and you'll be fine. - sponeil, on 05/22/2008, -0/+8Time to open an enormous night-club called "The Big Easy", and keep this stuff circulating in the air constantly. People looking for one-night stands would never go anywhere else.
- lamiaconfitor, on 05/22/2008, -0/+7If only I could drug God... hell yeah! what could look better in your little black book?
- DestroyFascism, on 05/22/2008, -5/+12So this is why lawyers pass you water when you sit down....(At 500 dollars an hour)
- mikephimikephi, on 05/22/2008, -2/+9A stranger is just a friend you haven't met
- Bilabrin, on 05/22/2008, -0/+7I disagree if the drug was dropped in her drink unwittingly. If she took it voluntarily, then I agree but if she was drugged, that's rape.
- Tyviris, on 05/22/2008, -4/+11So do we have to be careful now when a salesman hands us a cup of water?
- EdgeOfEpsilon, on 05/22/2008, -0/+7I'm sure that's not a scam. They seem totally trustwor… hey!
- blamar, on 05/22/2008, -1/+8These aren't the droids we're looking for.
You can go about your business.
Move along. - lamiaconfitor, on 05/22/2008, -1/+8yeah.. cause thats not coercion... /sarcasm
- Bilabrin, on 05/22/2008, -0/+7We elected that chimpanzee twice. What makes you think it isn't already in play?
Apologies to chimpanzees. - EdgeOfEpsilon, on 05/22/2008, -0/+7Exactly.
- thecatcantalk, on 05/22/2008, -2/+9@SaintDogbert Easy question. Both LSD and MDMA, when used properly and not abused as recreational drugs, have the potential to radically re-order people's perceptions. Ram Dass (aka Dr. Richard Alpert, like Leary a former Harvard prof.) used to emphasize that LSD ought not be taken more than once, maybe twice a year, and only in a carefully controlled setting, with a specific intention in mind. But thanks to idiots like Timothy Leary and Stanley "Bear" Owsley, who both advocated/facilitated totally reckless abuse of LSD (and everything else) as a one-size-fits-all substitute for any kind of structured spiritual practice, a LOT of naive kids got really badly hurt, fried their brains, wound up in mental hospitals, etc. THAT'S what turned the public against LSD, and recreational drugs in general, really: experience.
Most of the blame can be laid at Timothy Leary's door. Ram Dass tried to rein in Leary's egomania, to no avail. Leary had himself a whole colony of trust fund hippies at his "commune" in Milbrook, NY, whom he bilked out of millions of inherited dollars by conning them with his "groovy guru" act.
Indians (from India, I mean) had already known for millenia that dope was a dead end, but LSD was, at that time, the only thing powerful enough to open up the American psyche. There were casualties, but overall, it was a good thing. We learned the hard way, fast, what folks in India already knew: that when it comes to spiritual practice, one needs to keep a sharp eye out for charlatans, and keep awake. Because drugs are a "cheat", an attempt to get the results without the hard work of actual practice, they're of seriously limited value.
***** like Leary and Hunter S. Thompson ignored this fact, and cynically exploited the drug culture in order to glorify themselves and relieve dumb college kids of their money. So did Hollywood. Only much later did movies such as "Requiem For a Dream" come out with more well-rounded stories. To his credit, William Burroughs had ALWAYS been honest with his audience, and had had nothing nice to say about his own heroin addiction.
Personally, I'd advocate the careful, intentional use of psilocybin mushrooms in a forest campground, among good friends, with plenty of good food, clean, flowing water, a bonfire and music. Mushrooms won't hurt you, unless you're very fragile (and you shouldn't be tripping, seriously, unless you know you can think your way out of a bad trip). Dropping acid is like getting shot out of a rifle, by comparison...fun, but risky. If you don't know the guy who made it, DON'T drop it. I'm so serious; there are some real idiots out there, who add strychnine to LSD to make the acid seem stronger. Neurotoxins = bad. And for God's sake, never buy drugs from a black man or a Mexican, if you value your life and your sanity (sorry, PC police, it's rude but true)...every addict knows, you don't go to Brown Town for drugs unless you want to get robbed, killed, or very sick from smoking poisoned/contaminated dope.
Now, where's that cookie? - EdgeOfEpsilon, on 05/22/2008, -2/+8Except that oxytocin can't be administered orally, because it's broken down in the stomach
fail - bermudianguy, on 05/22/2008, -1/+7"Whose to say they haven't already ...dun , dun , dun "
- nyx210, on 05/22/2008, -0/+6That's scary as *****.
- HerbSolo, on 05/22/2008, -0/+6Scopolamine has been used under the name burundanga, a jungle form of Rohypnol in Venezuelan and Thailand resorts in order to drug and then rob tourists. While there are unfounded rumours that delivery mechanisms include using pamphlets and flyers laced with the drug, not enough is readily absorbed through the skin to have an effect. However, spiked alcoholic drinks are occasionally used. [5][6]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scopolamine - HerbSolo, on 05/22/2008, -0/+5Suuure. - Why waste our time trying to find out how our body works. That won't help anybody.
- greatgatsbyII, on 05/22/2008, -0/+4he found a way to distribute it through digg so we will trust and blindly digg his posts
- joeTaco, on 05/22/2008, -0/+4Fascinating article. Definitely thought it was going to talk about alcohol.
- akademikshock, on 05/22/2008, -0/+4Yes.
- Gwennyk, on 05/22/2008, -0/+4I heard about this. They drug people with it and then ask them to take all their money out and they do. There's that prostitute who makes a living out of it. And one guy said he tried it and was hallucinating for 17 days straight, and his friend who tried it too, apparantly still is. Nice.
- ISeeDumbPeople, on 05/22/2008, -2/+6You accept strange drinks from salesmen in the first place? :) lol.
- linagee, on 05/22/2008, -1/+5under the influence of what?
- thecatcantalk, on 05/22/2008, -0/+4Sweet zombie Jesus in a flying saucer, Martha, lock up the girls!
Nice deconstruction of *EVERYBODY PANIC* angle. Now I really wish I'd taken organic chemistry instead of that Virginia Woolf seminar. Is EdgeofEpsilon correct in stating that oxytocin has no effect when taken orally? Anyhow, nice point, that there's NO DATA presented to support the "Now strangers can force you to trust them" assertion. You rock, sir. - Bilabrin, on 05/22/2008, -0/+4The sad thing is that MDMA causes real damage but kids don't believe it because the gov't says things like "Marijuana causes cancer." And when kids find out it's a lie they don't trust the gov't anymore and they lose respect for the police as well.
- inactive, on 05/22/2008, -2/+5I mean it's been studied extensively.
http://www.maps.org/mdma/
MDMA was originally developped to help psychological therapy. It was discontinued when they found out that a prolonged use basically destroyed parts of the brain and limited brain activity. -
