- BillE3, on 10/05/2008, -2/+30Quite fitting considering how many members of our society are parasites living off government largess. It has become a lifestyle.
- gavinhudson, on 10/05/2008, -0/+21Great article. And to think that in schools we teach children "humans are at the top of the food chain." In fact, it's not a chain, but a circle.
- WordsnCollision, on 10/05/2008, -2/+15So the success of an ecosystem is just a fluke of nature?
- MacBookForMe, on 10/05/2008, -1/+11Leena, that is a real gold! These trillions of parasite life forms hold all under optimal control...in not optimal environments...and they are really the most adoptable forms of life, as well.
- GovernmentsGun, on 10/05/2008, -5/+11Parasitism is a problem in human society too.
But don't parasites have a right to live comfortably with everything they might think they need? It's immoral to ween off, or kill the parasites, from it's host because the parasites have "rights", correct? Even if those rights damage or kill the host! - btschul, on 10/05/2008, -1/+7Andrew Ryan is gonna be pissed.
- epadafunk, on 10/05/2008, -0/+5no. be patient. go read something else while you wait for it to load.

gee i kill myself, so theres no need to send anyone round. ok? - blaisedaly, on 10/05/2008, -2/+6"Parasites are often regarded as a scourge on nature, but—as counterintuitive as it may seem—they may actually keep ecosystems healthy. They may control how top predators coexist with their prey. And when ecosystems begin to suffer, parasites are often the first ones to feel the effects—leading some scientists to believe the tiny creatures could form an early warning system for ecosystems in trouble."
Next time RTFA - hangglide, on 10/05/2008, -0/+4Actually it is not a circle but a web.
- MechanicalZack, on 10/05/2008, -0/+4It's like The Animorphs all over again... Damn Yeerks...

- btschul, on 10/05/2008, -0/+3That was a bit offensive.
- TheScogg, on 10/05/2008, -0/+3Actually it's not a web but a series of tubes,

- Haoie, on 10/05/2008, -1/+3Although you probably wouldn't want to think about it, chances are there are at least a few parasites living inside you.
- AKron, on 10/05/2008, -0/+2Dugg for the Digg effect
- blaisedaly, on 10/05/2008, -1/+3No, I'm sure I didn't.
You blame the parasite for a weakening ecosystem (economic in this instance.) The article seems to highlight their worth and necessity for a healthy ecosystem (ecological in this time.)
Perhaps the two aren't analogous, but if they aren't, why are you using the analogy?
If they are analogous, it seems you should reach a different conclusion. - cplusplus, on 10/05/2008, -0/+2There is a parasite for every living thing. Including parasites. Therefore there are more parasites than anything else.
- liuite, on 10/05/2008, -0/+2some politicians and businessmen ...and some workers are parasites too
- sirlancelot88, on 10/05/2008, -0/+2Also the most popular life style on Digg.
- Darkaged, on 10/05/2008, -0/+2Actually it's not a series of tubes but a truck.
- Narcism, on 10/05/2008, -0/+2@GovernmentsGun
Yeah, but then the pot smokers go to shops to buy Doritos... it's a cycle. - Eugenitor, on 10/05/2008, -1/+3It was. Dugg for trolling.
- ASSASSYN360, on 10/06/2008, -0/+1Earth has parasites. They are called humans.
- JYoungest1, on 10/05/2008, -0/+1Wow old. Amazing storyline for being a pre-teen book.
- syphern, on 10/05/2008, -0/+1Yeah these things have other names - wife, girlfriend, female escort, jenna jameson....
- Lionhart, on 10/05/2008, -2/+3Insert a "my wife" joke here.
- savagesteve13, on 10/05/2008, -0/+1It worked for the Gou'ald.
- spawnfree, on 10/05/2008, -1/+2*slaps tapeworm around like it was a dizzy socialite*
- btschul, on 10/05/2008, -4/+5Same here.
- desertDenizen, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1Welfare recipients may be parasitic but they don't brainwash people. You're pretty stupid. But then, you're defending Fox, so thanks for confirming what everybody already knows: Fox viewers aren't the brightest bulb on the tree.
In fairness however, Fox brainwashes people but I wouldn't call it parasitic, except that it feeds on people's fears. Maybe technically accurate, but there are certainly better examples of parasitism. - GovernmentsGun, on 10/05/2008, -3/+4You actually made my point. Things at starting to go to pot, and we're hearing cries everywhere of wanting free stuff.
- btschul, on 10/05/2008, -4/+5Nope. Welfare recipients.
- ericdano, on 10/05/2008, -3/+3Yes, and Obama is trying to get into the Whitehouse. The ultimate parasite seat of power.
- AzielBaal, on 10/05/2008, -0/+0Just like the New World Order. They brainwash and control the hosts. If the host woke up and shook them off where the hell would the parasites be???
- TooLazyToWork, on 10/05/2008, -0/+0Damn! Its soo long, did everyone here read the complete article??
- Spure, on 10/05/2008, -3/+3need mirror
- blaisedaly, on 10/05/2008, -3/+2"By killing or castrating other hosts, parasites may also help keep ecosystems from flying out of control. If the population of a species expands quickly, it may threaten to exhaust its food supplies. But its parasites will expand their numbers as well, driving down the population of their host. Yet parasites can rarely drive their hosts to extinction because, once their hosts become rare, they can no longer sustain their own population. “Parasites probably increase the stability of free-living species,” Lafferty says."
- irvman21, on 10/05/2008, -6/+3No wonder the Obamination is so popular.
- thehotcarl, on 10/05/2008, -10/+3Hmm, I didn't know that Jews classified as a life form.
- irvman21, on 10/05/2008, -13/+6I thought this article was going to be about liberals.
