- dingram09, on 09/05/2008, -0/+25No. That would be a pedobyte.
- fiatjustitia, on 09/06/2008, -3/+19Gordon, they're ready for you in the test chamber.
- failedpimp, on 09/05/2008, -3/+18Just don't cross the streams.
- SkeletalBias, on 09/05/2008, -6/+21So is a petabyte like a unit of memory that molests megabytes?
- cornerback42, on 09/05/2008, -1/+16Is there anyway to view or have some of the data sent to you? (me) I think it would be cool to go through and at least check it out. What time does it fire? (EST, USA).
I want to set my alarm 1 min before in case a black hole gobbles us up, that way I can brush my teeth before it sucks me in. - inactive, on 09/05/2008, -3/+14If I got one of these - could I eventually rule the world?
- Alex2, on 09/06/2008, -1/+9Actually, there's no proof that it will 'Revolutionize physics'.
There is the possibility that they turn it on and not detect any new particles. - Pronoiac, on 09/06/2008, -1/+9A petabyte is a staunch defender of nature whose only mission is total animal liberation.
- travis6690, on 09/06/2008, -1/+7Oh, so it's like a Mac.
- Disgod, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5Yeah, but even if they find nothing they've learned a whole lot, and possibly they will disprove their current theories, and the really nice thing about projects like this are the offshoot technologies which are created to support the main project. This system that they developed for their project has the potential to revolutionize the internet, and pretty much every other major or minor scientific project has spawned at least a few, if not dozens of technologies which by themselves are major accomplishments. Look at NASA it has created hundreds of technologies which have gone on to be successful in the private sector, or have greatly altered entire industries. The Manhattan Project also was a major source of spin off products.
That's why I love science like that, only at the cutting edge of science do we start seeing brand new technologies being created. - ik5pvx, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5someone working there called Tim Berners Lee set up the first http server...
- Scynet, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5Check out their webcast:
http://webcast.cern.ch/ - archivist, on 09/06/2008, -1/+5In the future, Computers / Servers will be powered by blackholes that sustain themselves. The files in your Trash Bins will be stored via these blackholes... and they never come back.
- DrunkenPirate34, on 09/06/2008, -1/+5Dude yes, exactly what I thought. HL is coming...
- inactive, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3Somehow, the Internet pornography industry will be the first to capitalize on this technology.
- fuxxx, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3Insufficient lols

- doublejay1973, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3Does it run Crysis ?
- noahgelman, on 09/06/2008, -2/+5I cant even download at 500kbs :(
- bjos144, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3which would revolutionize physics... no SUSY? no string theory? no Higgs? that would be crazy
- piesforyou, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3You'd use your last pecious moments on earth to... brush your teeth? I can think of something better.
- DiggItalia, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2Yes, the interwebz. It came to my mind 5 seconds after I posted this message. I was sure I had deleted it! oh noes, this proof of my utter ignorance will last for years and years..
- TeflonDom, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2I wonder what would happen if I put a bowling ball in there?
- Mrstupid7, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2Instead they're just going to slam them directly into each other.
The end of the world is nigh! - Terasiel, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2...So that's what a Large Hadron Collider is.
- Testiculese, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2I'm glad I can lol in the office!
- JacobParker, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2I get 50 - 100 :(

- Murdats, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2@terasiel
flash memory, microprocessors and headphones were all common technology for decades before the first mp3 player was created, and it was new technology, and playing music is not exactly cutting edge. - unitedkronos, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2She'd probobly be one of the few who believe the HC will cause a black hole to devour the Earth.
- diggenerate, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1Sucks to be you.
- maley, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1First thing I did when coming in here was ctrl+f 'blend', beat me to it :(
- ArcherNX01, on 09/06/2008, -1/+2From my RSS feed, I kinda expected the headline to be:
The LHC Will Revolutionize Physics. Will It Blend? - Buckwyld, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1Doomed I tell you!! DOOMED!!!
haha - CourtneyGQ, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1interesting....should also be insightfull when they turn on the many mega-pixel/processor pods linked and lined up over thousands of kilometers....think about a box that houses net/computers/batteries + a 100 megapixel or so camera(s) with movement and multiple lens ability....build a few thousand of those boxes/cameras and line then up in an array somewhere there's not alot of light pollution and then start looking at the universe at the macro scale (rather then at the micro scal with LHC)....
during certain events how many digital cameras are taking pictures of and focusing on 1 star/celeb?...i've often wondered what all that mega-pixel-power focused on real stars would look like....all those digital cameras at the Superbowl...the hundreds and hundreds of high end digital cameras with reporters and the tens of thousands of lessor mega pixel cameras with the fans....the massive mega pixel potential is looming...at the astro level and the quantum - localzuk, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1You could have just read the article, which explains it...
- Terasiel, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1...wouldn't technologies only be created at the cutting edge, because cutting edge implies the newest, least understood things, anyway?
- androothebear, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1am i the only one who's really really excited about this?
- NinjaNato, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1The Grid is awesome
http://digg.com/tech_news/CERN_video_How_The_Grid_ ... - worldchanger, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1dangit, you beat me.
- JesseJ, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1Check this video presentation on the supercollider!
http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/brian_cox_on_ce ... - nlight, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1Porn industry capitalizes on everything. Imagine stuff freezing just as it comes out at 3 K.
- nlight, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1Something about your comment reminds me that you have no idea what you're talking about.
- cornerback42, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1Nothing like clean teeth before you hit the event horizon.
- Spoomeister, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1So, 10 years from now, will we all be running VLHC@home as our screensavers?
- r00fus, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1That's running Vista
- piesforyou, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1It would be worth it to see that gigantic sky scraper in city 17.... OMG, it is the burj dubai!!
- cornerback42, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1Whoops meant to reply to my own comment.
