- Error601, on 11/07/2007, -0/+10"At its simplest, it's a matter of conditioning. By pairing a positive stimulus with a flavor, the flavor becomes better-liked. "All other things being equal, familiar flavors are liked better than unfamiliar flavors,"
I think that summed up why so many people acquire the taste for beer when they think it's nasty the first time they try it. - mozfet, on 11/07/2007, -0/+9Dugg for usefullness...
The first paragraph of the story contained a link the the science behind how to chop an onion without crying... the most practical thing I learned all week... to think of all those tears shed in ode to the humble onion.

- lukemandese, on 11/07/2007, -0/+6When they create a machine that makes any food taste like cake, call me.
- internetcoward, on 11/07/2007, -0/+6My minor was yumtology. Mostly beer yumtology. Nice article.
- sockpuppets, on 11/07/2007, -0/+5They did, it's called an Orange Box.
- p0ss, on 11/07/2007, -0/+4smell-o-vision?
- KingBunny, on 11/07/2007, -0/+4And we start buying food-flavored pig-fat-and-sawdust in 3.. 2.. 1..
A lot of "pleasure" from eating is the texture though (soggy cereals or potato chips anyone?) so I'm not sure how magical this will be. - kevintmckay, on 11/07/2007, -2/+5it is hard to get excited about this as the more we tamper with what we eat the fater and sicker we get.
- antechinus, on 11/07/2007, -0/+3The US is already well known for having some of the most screwed up 'food' in the world. This kind of research is only going to make your industrial cuisine worse. Still, when your dollar hits .25c in the Euro you're going to need to use that wonderful flavouring technology to create yummy tasting burgers from sewage.
- xixor, on 11/07/2007, -0/+2ha, agreed. 1.) companies research cheap synthetic processed food 2.) sell synthetic food cheaper than grown food 3.) maintain low minimum wage (after all, you can feed a family by eating taco bell) 4.) repeat until you have completely isolated the lower class
- paulbyrnes, on 11/07/2007, -0/+2Edial and sockpuppets' comments will be dugg up and down like a see-saw.
- TheChihuahua, on 11/07/2007, -0/+2Oh my God...I've got some ***** Jaffa Cakes in my coat pocket!
- Vector713, on 11/07/2007, -0/+2also!
Removing a certain part of the onion before chopping stops tears as well.

That video shows you exactly what to remove and where to cut. - paulbyrnes, on 11/07/2007, -1/+3Another misinformed skeptic. History will show the conservatives have always been blindly scared of science and technology. The only worry with GM foods is the unknown effects they could have on biotopes if new species escape into the natural environment. We will get fatter and sicker by eating Maccas and watching reality TV.
- AtomicTank, on 11/07/2007, -0/+2And yet people will still drink coffee.
- strikerInsane, on 11/07/2007, -0/+2I'm waiting for something almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea.
- antiver, on 11/07/2007, -0/+2You mean, with a fat kid on one side?
- xixor, on 11/07/2007, -0/+2Just what north america needs, even better tasting synthetic processed foods, optimally designed to hit taste sensors. They'll probably trigger endorphin releases into your brain, and you'll become addicted. I'll be the skinny guy in the corner eating an apple.
- inactive, on 11/07/2007, -0/+2So who else is excited about getting some skittlebrau?
- schnikies79, on 11/07/2007, -0/+2It's not impossible for humans to create something that is good for us. It doesn't have to be "natural" to be good or even great.
- CiXeL, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1go ahead and just try to get accustomed to durian
there is no way you can acquire a taste for durian. - CiXeL, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1there are a few things where only certain people have the receptors for genetically
bignay, a type of fruit, tastes great to most people but tastes like a very bitter mildew like flavor to a small percentage of the population. they did this after creating a pie at fairchild gardens in miami decades ago and passing out slices and finding certain families thought something was wrong with it.
http://www.hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/morton/bignay_a ...
there is a specific species of mushroom (i dont recall the name) that will make people with a specific gene vomit instantly upon smelling it. the theory is that the people most exposed to that mushroom developed it as an evolutionary response to tell the poisenous mushrooms from the edibles. i had a biology teacher in college who would get his kicks by passing around the mushroom and inviting everyone to take a sniff to see if anyone carried the gene. - CiXeL, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1i have nothing against technology at all.
i think its more the fear that they can feed us cardboard, wood chips and lard that taste like the best thanksgiving dinner ever. - vornan19, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1dugg! for the HHGTTG reference.
- shenfrancisco, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1Each item was purchased, taken home, and photographed immediately. Nothing was tampered with, run over by a car, or anything of the sort. It is an accurate representation in every case. Shiny, neon-orange, liquefied pump-cheese, and all.
Finally, the food is totally disappointing! [PICS]:
http://www.linkinn.com/_Doesn_t_Look_Like_The_Pict ... - cubeeggs, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1The evolution of smell began far before humans were around.
- vornan19, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1True, mostly. But many primates are hard-wired to love*sugar!
- vornan19, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1I heard an article this morning on NPR. It's about the flavours we can taste: sweet, sour, salty, and bitter, and umami. Give it a listen if you like cool food news!
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?story ... - vornan19, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1That's the old pepper!
- Nichiren, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1Soylent green tastes pretty good.
- inactive, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1Old pepper? Fresh ground only.
Buried. - vornan19, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1I french press, fair trade, organic, coffee that is roasted in the localy owned store where it is sold. YUM!
- psplayer6, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1Read the first paragraph and then the ADD hit me.
- inactive, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1'Smoke flavor?" "Why!?!?!?"
"There's ***** in the meat" - protogenxl, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1The top secret government Eggo project.
Contact Dr. Jemima! - xixor, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1It's alright, just hit the front page again, read the first paragraph of the next interesting story, and repeat.
- r3bol, on 11/07/2007, -0/+0Its all in the seasoning.
- inactive, on 11/07/2007, -5/+3Detox or die
Yummy cancer - try organic - edial, on 11/10/2007, -11/+1You'd think 3 million years of humans would learn us what tastes good, oh wait; it's science knocking on the door again.
