- iamcommie, on 12/28/2008, -7/+386Dear Cops:
You are dumb. Get out. - inactive, on 12/28/2008, -7/+279"My client is a very intelligent young man . . . he's very keen in chemistry, a very curious young person and very capable, very knowledgeable in the area and he was always curious with regard to chemistry, chemical compounds, chemical reactions, that kind of thing. So from my client's point of view, it's completely innocent insofar as he had no intention of creating any explosives or explosive devices. As people probably know, anything in your house can constitute or be used in chemical or explosive devices, including sugar and cleaning compounds, Mr. Clean, bleach, detergents, all those sorts of things."
-nuff said.... I'm thinking not guilty... - HookmasterCH47, on 12/28/2008, -7/+246Police 1

Oh, and dugg for using fertilizers to make meth, I thought you made explosives with fertilizer. - drew101, on 12/28/2008, -16/+212sad thing is this is in Canada and it shows that stupidity is contagious, I mean if this happened in the US it would not suprise me but Canada.
- inactive, on 12/28/2008, -1/+168Ridiculous.
Will they arrest gardeners for having poppies in their yard next? Oh wait, I have something much worse... Castor beans... they are very pretty, but you could make Ricin (a deadly poison) out of them... oh-oh, I also have a Yew and Laburnum... more deadly poisons can be made from them... I even have a big rock and pointy stick in my yard... should I be worried?
Every kid with a chemistry set tries to make a little boom. Even my chemistry professor liked it. He did not blow up Toronto. - tgc1, on 12/28/2008, -5/+170I don't think people understand the gravity of this sort of situation. This is the reason we are all falling back as a human race. If we allow these type of ***** police antics to keep science from moving forward we are going to stagnate and the only places we'll be allowed to conduct research and the like will be in labs backed by corporate interests and dollars where all of your discoveries are owned by some conglomerate who will patent it and sell it and pat you on the back like a nice little peon.
I mean what's next? Are they going to start arresting people for reverse engineering electronics (in the name of copyright and patent infringement)? At what point does science and discovery of things get interfered with by these moronic bureaucrats? Do you think half the discoveries made in the last century would have been so if it was for brain dead cops like this interfering and over stepping their authority? I think not.
I really hate to bring this up. But it seems like corporatization of the world is happening more and more. Like they are trying to remove the possibility of anyone making any independent discovery. Like they are trying to legislate or police everyone with a brain out of making discoveries or inventions that are not held by patents controlled by larger corporations. This is just horse *****.
Maybe i'm over reacting. But first they take away chemistry sets, then they take away other things. Pretty soon the only thing you'll be allowed to experiment with is WHAT THEY LET YOU. - aereaus, on 12/28/2008, -5/+147All hail the War On Terror, and the paranoia that goes with it! I wonder how the news coverage would differ if this guy was a Muslim.
- Drahkar, on 12/28/2008, -2/+108This is a prime example of why humanity is having such a hard time moving past the age of ignorance. Too many people who don't even bother to try and figure out what is really going on and when they realize they made a mistake they are too selfish to just admit it.
I would rather an organization stop the kid, pull him in, investigate it and then admit that it was nothing. I would be impressed with that because it means they are doing their job and that when they find nothing wrong they are allowing him to go back to his own life.
The way it is now, they pull him in, and then try and make something up because they don't want to 'Look bad'. All the time making everyone hate them all the more. - OrangeTide, on 12/28/2008, -4/+104We must all my sacrifices to keep the community safe from the temptation of drug abuse. I hope we can one day eradicate computer viruses by taking away books on computer programming.

- Prototek, on 12/28/2008, -0/+91You can make meth with anhydrous ammonia which is used as a fertilizer.

- Portfolioso, on 12/28/2008, -4/+83This is why the Canada (and the US also) is failing. We are losing skilled, scientific and engineering careers to India and China. Few are interested or smart enough to study these fields anymore, and the people who are intelligent are apparently labeled "terrorists".
How are people supposed to learn and gain intelligence so our nation can pump out more chemists and engineers so we can once again gain a competitive advantage in the global economy? - jmcneilly, on 12/28/2008, -6/+82Ut! You know how make stuff! You am kriminal!
- forgeflow, on 12/28/2008, -2/+77This happened a few blocks from my house. The initial news we got was of the discovery of a meth lab in the area. The neighbourhood in question is fairly affluent, upper middle class, about a block off the "main drag" on the east side of Saskatoon. But it's not unheard of for meth labs to be busted in this general area - it has happened before. Then the news came out that it was a teenage boy involved. I was at a party later that night, and a friend of mine works at the local Global TV station, in the news department, and told me that it wasn't a meth lab at all - that they have found materials that could be used to make explosives. To which I replied, "If someone had raided my house when I was a teenager they would have found materials to make explosives." Like a lot of smart teenage boys I went through an experimenter phase, and regularly made my own gunpower, flash power, fooled around with the contents of old railroad flares, made match-head rockets, and the like. Even made my own thermite. Because that's what smart teenage boys are SUPPOSED TO DO. It's part of the human experience, part of the development of the brain, of the scientific spirit. I hope this kid gets off. The whole thing is ridiculous.
PS. Our cops here are pretty good - they are just doing their job. It's not their fault - its a sickness that has crept into our society. The sickness is fear. Also, I am fairly certain where he would have gotten his "fertilizer" - there is an Early's Farm and Garden store about 2 blocks from here where they have Potassium Nitrate and other such oxidizers by the pound. And frightened old ladies. - spyd3rweb, on 12/28/2008, -0/+73If you're selling something and are concerned people are buying it, maybe you should not be a business person.
- amy31415, on 12/28/2008, -3/+75I'm a chemist too and I have some semblance of a "lab" in my home and I'm often fearful that I'll be arrested just for what I have, even though I do absolutely nothing illegal. Some "freedom" we have here in America.
***** meth jackasses are spoiling everything for us real chemists. - kkkondorrr, on 12/28/2008, -1/+65Go on...
*Grabs pen and paper* - stockgotti, on 12/28/2008, -2/+66The "war on drugs" as well as the "war on terrorism" are both just manufactured justifications for government to further encroach upon our civil liberties. This story is an excellent example of how broken our system is.
- robflynn, on 12/28/2008, -0/+64I had a friend who went grocery shopping one day. He happened to have some allergy problems that day, as well, so he picked up some Sudafed while he was there, along with some bleach to do some laundry later that day. A few hours after he got home, police arrived at his door to search his house based on those two purchases. (They were not the only things he bought, but because they were purchased at the same time, the cashier called the police.)
Sort of off topic, I guess, though, kind of relevant as well. - mustang460, on 12/28/2008, -0/+62Potassium nitrate is saltpeter, and can be found in pharmacies, hardware stores, Walmart, and even Ebay.
- rolf, on 12/28/2008, -0/+61"It's unclear what made police raid Casey's house. They claim that they got a tip from a woman who sold Casey fertilizer and was concerned about it."
It's sad that people are so scared and piss themselves over every little thing. - Rhydeble, on 12/28/2008, -5/+65Religion
- portnoy, on 12/28/2008, -1/+58We have words for fear of heights, open spaces, confinement, water, etc. What is the clinical term for "fear of smart people"?
- LordByr0n, on 12/28/2008, -1/+56He's a witch.... i mean drug dealer.... oh.... how about a terrorist.... well can we hold him on anything?
- tgc1, on 12/28/2008, -1/+52Or if you are a fairly good chemistry major you can make your own damn oxidizer using other components.
- Niallgriff, on 12/28/2008, -1/+45Possibly Canadians?
- sagerage, on 12/28/2008, -1/+44clearly anyone with a home computer should be investigated as a hacker too.
why are people so %&#$^@ stupid? - MN1962, on 12/28/2008, -5/+48If he was in the US the police would have shot him and claimed the soap he was holding was a gun.
- WoollyMittens, on 12/28/2008, -1/+43It's called fertilizer, but it's nice to see the propaganda is working on you.
- inactive, on 12/28/2008, -1/+43Well those cops probably didn't even finish highschool let alone know much about lab equipment.
"Der... there are some test tubes and a bunsen burner... METH LAB GET HIM!!!!" - meghalc, on 12/28/2008, -0/+41***** nosey fertilizer seller.
- WoollyMittens, on 12/28/2008, -0/+41It's nice to see both the war on terror and the war on drugs coming together in one miss-aimed blow.
The fearmongers in power have successfully destroyed both our freedom and science with their selective enforcement of vaguely defined laws. Only the corporate elite are allowed to practice either.
When are we going to take back the civilisation, that was built on our backs and is now held hostage against us. - kkkondorrr, on 12/28/2008, -1/+42You should be fine, until you try to take that deadly rock/pointy stick combo onto an airplane.
PS.You sure it's just the one stick in your yard though?Because i hear fires can break out when two stick are in close proximity and friction is introduced. You could be charged with attempted arson!
Quick, go count your sticks! - draculthemad, on 12/28/2008, -1/+41If innocence is no armor against the law, then what worth has it?
(Im probably butchering the quote, but I cant find the exact one or source at the moment) - WoollyMittens, on 12/28/2008, -0/+40The system is not broken. It is working exactly as designed by those in power.
- procrasti, on 12/28/2008, -10/+47You are the very reason you don't have freedom. You blame the "meth jackasses" rather than support their freedom (to be stupid and self destructive). Hint: Its not the "meth jackasses" that are going to arrest and prosecute you.
- inactive, on 12/28/2008, -0/+37don't ***** with the Canada.
- TheFuzzyOne, on 12/28/2008, -2/+39About 1500.

- amy31415, on 12/28/2008, -0/+34Seriously. It's not just us college-educated chemists, it's the autodidacts who will be targeted just for experimentation.
It is so difficult to get chemicals these days that even when I worked for a university, I was unable to get a specialty chemical for use in cancer research without jumping through very expensive hoops. The department couldn't afford all the permits to get the chemical and the research was abandoned.
Land of the free, my ass. - litfsh, on 12/28/2008, -1/+35Are you kidding? This young man was clearly responsible for committing gross acts of science. He was probably going to try and convert impressionable children into his scientific cult. What's next, evolution?!?
- inactive, on 12/28/2008, -2/+34fail for not using chemistry talent to manufacture LSD as opposed to meth.
