- r0b1, on 01/08/2009, -1/+47"Why aren't we funding this?"
- oda1, on 01/08/2009, -2/+37Imagine all that Iraq-war money PLUS the Trillion something Bailout going to research like this? It's sad to admit, but we surely would live in a different, healthier and happier world right now.
- Hypatia42, on 01/08/2009, -2/+35That's right, God hates progress. It's righteous to die from completely reversable stone-age diseases and conditions...
Let's run our scientific organizations accordingly. - enantiodromia, on 01/08/2009, -6/+36wow, and here i have been trying to pray my kids birth defects away. i never thought to use science!
- xblank, on 01/08/2009, -3/+27And us Atheist liberal communist marxist hippy dyslexics,
Untie! - inactive, on 01/08/2009, -2/+23And to think Bush was going to ban this for religious reasons. It's just disgusting.
- Heni905, on 01/07/2009, -1/+18didnt they figure out a way to do it without using embryos?
- jsdieorksw, on 01/07/2009, -3/+19Yes they have, there are several ways to get stem cells without using embryos. stem cells from embryos are just the best ones to use. Mike: do your research
- alpha88, on 01/08/2009, -4/+16Awesome, now all mothers can use their Heroin as much as they please!
- oda1, on 01/08/2009, -3/+15WTF are you doing? you ruined it, I'm only half-way through reading... thanks for giving it away, jerk.
- hauntedchippy, on 01/08/2009, -1/+12Superstition 0, Science X
(Where X equals the number of times science has gotten one over the dark age crazies) - WoollyMittens, on 01/08/2009, -5/+16Too bad Jesus forbids stemcells, or something backwards retarded like that.
- pantsperch, on 01/08/2009, -1/+12Lab mice get everything good: weight loss, cured brain defects, extra ears on the back.
- Dermisgermis, on 01/08/2009, -1/+9 "Flowers for Algernon" anyone?
- IKORKYI, on 01/08/2009, -2/+10Yep, those dead fetuses will find better use being thrown away than used to drastically improve the lives of others.
- gipp, on 01/08/2009, -1/+8This is pretty pedantic, but the only kind of defects that could be fixed by stem cells are NON-genetic ones. Physical damage, or outside stimuli like heroin. Injecting stem cells in your embryo isn't going to alter the genetic makeup of existing cells.
- Zarokima, on 01/08/2009, -0/+7Yes, even though the whole discussion is about stem cells and their amazing healing abilities (which are severely under funded), it's obvious that intentionally defecting your potential children with heroin is what r0b1 thinks we should be funding.
- drunkenoaf, on 01/08/2009, -3/+9Think it's just the pope. And his millions of followers.
Edit. Oh, and republicans. - Colodia, on 01/08/2009, -3/+9Is this science or SCIENCE! ?
- Murdats, on 01/08/2009, -0/+6your chicken eggs argument is only valid if they don't eat chickens.
- hauntedchippy, on 01/08/2009, -5/+11But didn't Jesus say killing foreigners > medical research? Somewhere near the end I think.
- BobbyMC, on 01/08/2009, -0/+6I'M GONNA LIVE FOREVER!!!!
- hauntedchippy, on 01/08/2009, -0/+6A babies skull hasn't fused into a single bone yet, it's plated and quite spongy (this is one reason why you don't drop them), and since we already do things like remove tumours from deep within adult brains...
- jbmcb, on 01/08/2009, -2/+7There seem to be quite a few misconceptions on this thread -
1 - The people against stem cell research for religious reasons are against fetal stem cell research, not adult stem cell research. I'm pretty sure the article says they are using adult stem cells here.
2 - The study was on lab rats, and the side effects that are common with stem cell therapies haven't been thoroughly examined
It's a very interesting study, but has no real implications for humans yet. - inactive, on 01/08/2009, -5/+10"That's right, God hates progress. It's righteous to die from completely reversable stone-age diseases and conditions..."
Sounds about right, according to every person 'of faith' I've ever spoken with, which is quite a few. - drunkenoaf, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5It's patentable. Just because it isn't a pill doesn't mean there isn't money to be made.
- GamerX, on 01/08/2009, -6/+11Undo birth defects? Good news for George Bush!
Oh wait, I forgot he was "the one of the veto"... - inactive, on 01/08/2009, -6/+11Because the Republican Party is in power.
- tgc1, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5I thought the Democrats were majority during the last term?
- jeremyduffy, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4Bring on the replacement parts!
- angrynorwegian, on 01/08/2009, -0/+41/4" bit and and a drill.
- tgc1, on 01/08/2009, -1/+5Don't worry, one day things like this will become ubiquitous. Many of todays ailments will be long forgotten. Religion might even go the way of the dodo as well. One day.
- thanakar, on 01/08/2009, -1/+5Because the use adult stem cells is not patentable treatment so the big drug companies can't make any money off the treatments.
- gipp, on 01/08/2009, -1/+5I think it's a little of both.
Maybe science!? - Wawin, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4and that's the baby's fault because....?
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6ZuOZbO11A
- RogueGenius, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4Why didn't we discover this years ago? Oh, that's right. Now I remember.
- drunkenoaf, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4Problem is mostly the cancer risk.
Cancer is cells doing inappropriate things in their current location. Stem cells are capable of doing anything, anywhere, until they're programmed to do what they're supposed to do in their location.
Mice (in which this research was done) don't live nearly as long as humans. So they might die before cancer develops.
Also, there's the embryonic stem cells (young, plenty of divisions in it before it gets old (senescence)) and adult stem cells manipulated to form whatever tissue you want. The latter are older; older cells tend towards cancer faster.
So lots of careful research is still required. Otherwise you might be upping the chances of cancer in your patients quite significantly.
Even then there's a debate-- cure someone's paralysis (or whatever) in a 30 year old, if it kills them of cancer aged 35. - inactive, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3Not every Israeli is a Zionist.
- Murdats, on 01/08/2009, -1/+4yes, but they are volatile and prone to becoming cancerous, ok for research, not ok for people
- roddack, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3Every time I hear Stem Cells the image of Professor Farnsworth rubbing them all over his body to "turn" younger pops into my head
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -4/+7They know you're being sarcastic. That's why they're bitch-slapping you with knowledge.
- ctpmn, on 01/08/2009, -2/+5When are we actually going to start fixing people with this stuff. Is there a reason why we don't currently take adult stem cell from the patent and jam them into the brain to fix brain related issues. This stuff has been "researched" for quite a while, they do the same thing every time; take stem cells and then inject them into areas with problems. DO IT ALREADY!
- angrynorwegian, on 01/08/2009, -2/+5There's always money..but if they get to choose between you being a 1 time shopper or a dedicated customer for life...they will want you for life
- coyote1284, on 01/08/2009, -1/+4Maybe it's ninja science.
/"That's no ordinary sea anemone!" - P5ycHo, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3It can also repair severed spines.
- IKORKYI, on 01/08/2009, -1/+4so there are no atheists in foxholes?
- Azerael, on 01/08/2009, -3/+6I liked the bit where Jesus realized that The Holy Spirit and the Father were both in his head.
HIS NAME WAS JUDAS PAULSON. - cJw314, on 01/08/2009, -5/+8Why can't science be a tool God has given us to provide a better life for all?
