- MikeHinds, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Bush has NOT prevented ANY stem cell research. Neither has either house of Congress, or any judge of which I am aware.
He has said that the Federal government will not (on his watch) fund research from any new embryonic stem cell lines.
Any drug or bio-tech company, or any university using its own funding, or perhaps the next Bill Gates in his daddy's garage, may research stem cells to his/her heart/s content. If one is convinced this research is so promising, he/she may put his/her own money into it, and reap the benefits thereof. - sirholio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6that's not the whole story with stem cell research. Remember, there is a difference between fetal and adult stem cells. This is pretty much the kind of thing I expected to see with the advances of adult stem cell research. Not that I'm any kind of scientist.
- twombly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Well, ignorance is bliss... I know it's not cool these days to defend the Bush Administration. But, the only thing for which the Bush administration has restricted funding (at least regarding stem cells) is the ethically questionable use of embryonic stem cells.
The article, if you read it, and, in fact, all demonstrated advances in stem cell use thus far, have come from adult stem cells.
If you want to actually understand the issue, take a look at this article:
http://www.discovery.org/scripts/viewDB/index.php?command=view&id=2918 - vans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The current administration has made no rulings opposing adult stem cell research. Read the entire story again, it clearly states the scientists used mesenchymal stem cells, a.k.a. stem cells from bone marrow: http://tinyurl.com/rcrax
- Workster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6MacGyver, is that you?
- Cowboy5995, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Isn't Bush opposed to stem cells that are harvested from fetuses? I don't think he is against stem cells that can be harvested from bone marrow and from placentas.
- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This is much more elegant than the rubber-band and paperclip method I'm using right now. I need to get myself some stem cells....
- diggnate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5yet another example of the promises of adult stem cells.
- Petronski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The research in this article involved ADULT stem cells.
"...stem cells are not a living thing."
What? - twombly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3>...at the expense of people who never would have been
How can you have a person that never would have been. That doesn't make any sense and neither does your position. The problem is that in order to get useful (I use the term broadly since it hasn't been proved) stem cells. New embryos (read people that are) must be formed, then made into clones of other people that are, then destroyed.
I'm not sure which documentary you watched, but it's likely that they used adult or umbilical cord stem cells, because most studies of which I've heard where embryonic stem cells were used, very bad things happened. This is emerging science that hasn't been demonstrated to be successful and is unethical for many reasons.
See the following link for a myriad of articles on bioethics:

But it's cool to see what stem cells can do these days.
- starmanjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2replacement organs... body parts. stem cells. we are going to live very long lives if we can keep it in the open and not suppressed by religious groups for purposes of mythology.
- Petronski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"...at the expense of people who never would have been..."
That's a delightful euphemism. Are you from the Ministry of Truth? - rhettnyedotorg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1key word is ADULT
- dontbejack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The problem with the artificial parts they've made is that they're still experimental and we don't know what could possibly occur when they're used.
- rhettnyedotorg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1holy cow stem cell storys really pull the wack jobs out of the churches and on to their jesus comps eh?
- ryanknapper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Hebrew University scientists in Jerusalem say they've determined adult stem cells might one day be able to repair tendon and ligament injuries."
The key word is "might." I don't think this is adequate journalism. Its on par with "NASA scientists have determined that an asteroid MIGHT collide with the Earth within the next hundred years." - h3ath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why are we still dying when so many artificial parts have been created? Is there a necessary part we haven't made?
- kainewynd2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All right!
Now we'll be hearing about it for a good fifteen years before it does anywhere... again... - LacY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the comment was in reference to embryonic stem cells that *could* be obtained from the leftovers of in vitro fertilization. There are a lot of fertilized eggs produced that are never implanted, and are eventually destroyed. As they are slated for destruction anyway, scientists wanted to use them to obtain embryonic stem cells, but are not allowed to do so. Hence, the "at the expense of people who never would have been."
- smcgrath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Bush administration is against expanding the current line of allowed stem cell lines for research. In April 2001 they banned federal funding for research on new stem lines. The president stated “more than 60 genetically diverse stem cell lines”, were available but in September of 2001, HHS Secretary Thompson acknowledged that there were only 24 to 25 cell lines available that could be researched. In May 2003, NIH Director Dr. Elias Zerhouni reported to Congress that only around 11 stem cell lines were widely available for research. Now you can say that anyone can privately fund research, but the last time I checked, the vast vast majority of people don't have the millions of dollars needed to fund such grants. And for the millionaires that are out there, do you think the ones that only have 2-3 million in assets would spend upwards of 35 to 50% of their total net worth?
I'm excited about stem cells, the discovery here shows a lot of promise. My wife has undergone three surgeries to repair a blown ACL. The first surgery was following an injury sustained from a soccer game. Two years later, during an Athletic Training lab, she found out that the graft had failed. That resulted in the next two visits to the surgeon. I the reason the first reconstruction failed was due to the graft failing. I would be thrilled to see them anyone who sustained a similar injury could avoid the pitfalls my wife went through via any results from this study.
We need more lines available for research, tendons are great, but I would much rather see my wife's friends father be saved from MS, one of the disease that we stand to gain ground on via stem cells. And if you are still worried about harvesting fetuses, there has been work on that front too. Scientists at Johns Hopkins recently announced the discovery of a method for developing uninfected stem cell lines on feeder cells from adult humans. Scientists cannot work with new cell lines developed with this method, however, because President Bush’s policy prohibits the use of lines developed after April 2001. - PrayerNeeder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1twombly, can you provide a source that doesn't have the ultraconservative reputation that discovery.org carries?
I would like to be able to reiterate the very facts presented there, but discovery.org would suffer too much too easily and too quickly from an ad hominem attack. - rhettnyedotorg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ADULT STEM CELLS BUD
- modsuperstar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wish they had that when I tore my ACL last year
- igjoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with you. I tore a tendon in my wrist back in January. I didn't treat it right away so more than 3 months after the injury I'm still in a brace. I wish I could speed up the process.
- Jill333, on 12/03/2008, -0/+0There is a web site that can help you repair cartilage.
It really does work.
http://www.drynitealarms.com/DrKnee/ - sillygoose, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0All Stem Cell Research should be supported. Personally I could use some replacement disks for my spine.
The USA is not being a leader in this area and ain't it a shame.
The Political issue of Abortion Rights must-must -must be kept separate from Medical Research issues.
Stem cell technology will improve the treatments and cures for a wide variety of medical conditions. There is a good possibly that stem cell medical technology will improve the quality of a person's life AND be cheaper than treatments that are currently used (if the political and religious people are kept an a leash).
In the USA medicine is being controlled by powerful political persons because they are super wealthy. These persons are currently making money from the medical treatment sick people receive.
In the past, medical treatment was controlled by what a Doctor recommended as a cure for the illness; the money made from treatment of the illness went to the providers of the cure.
Now, only certain cures are approved to be used. Cures only are available from certain medical providers, that use the money made to raise the price of that certain medical provider's Stock, in the Market and these Stocks are owned by the super wealthy who can/do influence government policy.
The choices of Medical Insurance Coverage, for the general population of the USA is limited to, only the Insurance Companies that provide income for the super wealthy, who own these Companies and/or a lot of Stock in these Companies.
The medications available for the general population of USA is the same setup. The only Medications that can be bought here, come from certain Drug Companies that are, mostly owned by the super wealthy.
Drug Companies NOT owned by the super wealthy are falsely accused of making errors, via mis-information rumors. This can cause Drug recalls and delayed FDA approvals for these Drug Companies. The Stock Market's reaction to the rumored accusations, can be a drop in value of stock for these Drug Companies. Causing Drug Companies not owned by the super rich to lose money and with less money, less political influence.
Uncle Sam needs to get out of Medicine.
The super wealthy, who influence government policies should NOT make any money from the misfortune of human illness. Americans should have to right to chose from all the insurance companies, treatments, medications and Doctors available. Influence for treatment/cure of illness needs to come from a Doctor, then allow the patient to make the decisions about their own medical treatments.
Who are these super wealthy, political influencers? I think they might be members of the Republican Party.
I don't know anyone super wealthy; I don't even know someone who knows anyone super wealthy. None have ever been pointed out to me in a crowd or at a party. If I come across one, hope I'm brave enough to say "shame on you for being a heartless vulture!" - xiuxiu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0That comment above...just classic.
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0i remember watching a documentory on stem cells where in rats and mice they managed to regrow damaged nueral tissue in the spine and repair degeneritive brain defects the mice have had from birth with a simple injection, infact they replaced a sergically removed chunk of the spinal nerves simply by inserting some nylon soaked in stem cells, few weeks later, all fixed
so this is my question, why is it wrong to save existing life, prevent suffering and pain, at the expense of people who never would have been - joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1"why is it wrong to save existing life, prevent suffering and pain, at the expense of people who never would have been"
Why is it right to masturbate at the expense of all those sperm that may have been people that never would have been?
Why is it right to wear a condom at the expense of all those sperm that may have been people that never would have been?
Why is it right to take the pill at the expense of all those eggs that may have been people that never would have been?
Why is it right to eat chicken eggs at the expense of all thosethat may have been chickens that never would have been? - dontbejack, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2This is another reason why I hate the US so much. Stem cells are so promising in what they can do, but the current party in power doesn't seem to understand this. Give people money and time to study stem cells and it can be proven that stem cells are not a living thing.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3But... but... if Bush allows stem cell research, then the whole country won't be allowed into Heaven. Which is also why he won't let any gays marry, and why he supports Israel...
