- inactive, on 06/03/2009, -39/+569WHY AREN'T WE FUNDING THIS?
- YagLana, on 06/03/2009, -39/+410Maybe this can cure the blindness of people opposing stem cell research.
- Foliot, on 06/03/2009, -9/+319Never thought I'd see the day.
- btschul, on 06/03/2009, -13/+317Whats with all these ignorant comments? Did no one read the article?
1. Stem cells from the patients own eye were used. No one opposes adult stem cell research.
2. This procedure began 18 months ago while Bush was still president. Obama had absolutely ***** all to do with it.
3. IT'S IN ***** AUSTRALIA. That's why we're not funding it. - mentallyinhell, on 06/03/2009, -28/+299Why did we ever stop funding this?
- FlareHeart, on 06/03/2009, -5/+269Does that mean that they can repair my near-sighted-ness too? This would be an amazing alternative to Laser Eye Surgery...which I'm not too keen on.
- FDisk, on 06/03/2009, -5/+206Science! ***** YEAH!
- emt1451, on 06/03/2009, -5/+150We didn't. They didn't use embryonic stem cells, which were the controversial ones.
- inactive, on 06/03/2009, -7/+147They haven't set up a paypal account.
- enantiodromia, on 06/03/2009, -11/+142amazing.
- FDisk, on 06/03/2009, -4/+135I see what you did there.

- ChinaLumberjack, on 06/03/2009, -44/+141If by "we" you mean the United States, then the answer is: Because they elected to install a theocracy for two consecutive terms.
- ifruit, on 06/03/2009, -2/+95Yup, it also hurt more than I thought it would, but maybe I'm just a big pussy.
- boshhead, on 06/03/2009, -6/+83Good news for chronic masturbators.
- tidu, on 06/03/2009, -2/+78We can envision great things when we set our sights in the right direction.
- MaddGrinner, on 06/03/2009, -8/+75We are funding this. Almost everyone supports this type of research. Even the Catholic Church fully supports and endorses this type of research. I wish people would actually take the time and educate themselves as to the fact that I don't think any major group opposes adult stem cell research.
For the record, this along with just about every other medical advance from stem cells has been from adult stem cells NOT the controversial embryonic variety. - ifruit, on 06/03/2009, -2/+68Lasik was the best decision of my life.
- Kronos6948, on 06/03/2009, -2/+68This is ***** sweet. We can finally return sight to the blind without any cybernetic apparatus, a la Geordie La Forge. We beat out a Star Trek prediction!

- sonicpentatonic, on 06/04/2009, -2/+47As an individual who is currently working extensively with stem cells, let me say a few things:
First, I don't care who you are, this is not a "cheap" or "easy" process. Getting stem cells that will be viable candidates for these kinds of procedures requires growing the primary stem cells out extensively, then taking many clones and growing those cells out, and then choosing the best colonies from the best of THOSE clones and growing those out, and repeat until you have one, two, or maybe three clones that behave how you want them to, and are tenacious enough to grow well and form cells of consistent quality. Keeping and maintaining just a handful of plates of human stem cells costs about $1000 US a week in just materials alone, then factor in the salaries of those doing this work.
Secondly, the necessity of using embryonic stem cells is quickly diminishing since we can now turn adult cells back into pluripotent stem cells (iPS) that behave, for all intents and purposes, the same way as embryonic stem cells. See "Takahashi K, Yamanaka S (2006) Induction of pluripotent stem cells from mouse embryonic and adult fibroblast cultures by defined factors. Cell 126:663–676" for some very dense reading on how this is accomplished (WARNING: high level science within).
Disclaimer: that paper reference is to mouse iPS cells, but he published essentially the same paper for humans in 2007, I just didn't have that reference handy. - inactive, on 06/03/2009, -2/+46But it was definitely a risk.

- BaphClass, on 06/03/2009, -4/+43Near-sightedness is genetic on my dad's side. He's legally blind without the 2 contacts he needs to wear on his left eye (glass with a soft contact buffer), alongside the really thick one he wears on his right. A botched laser surgery damaged his eyes so bad that he needed to get a double cornea transplant. I can't wear my glasses in public because they look almost comically thick, and have worn contact lenses since 8th grade.
This is good news. Really good news. I just hope this isn't too good to be true. - LastVisibleDog, on 06/04/2009, -6/+45We didn't
This story is about adult stem cells research
Bush was a strong supporter of adult stem cell research
FUN FACT: there is still a ban on using federal funds to create new stem cell lines. - sonicpentatonic, on 06/04/2009, -1/+40I wonder if you are getting dugg for saying it hurt more than you thought, or for saying you're a big pussy.

- Habemus, on 06/04/2009, -1/+36The stem cells came from the patient's own eyes. No fetuses were involved.

- leftofthecenter, on 06/03/2009, -9/+39That doesn't change the fact that this is only a preview to some of the fantastic things we will see from embryonic stem cells. Obama may have not had anything to do with this, but I don't think it takes a genius to realize that if this is what can be done with adult stem cells, then embryonic stem cells are going to be very, very exciting.
- inactive, on 06/03/2009, -1/+28This is beyond awesome!
- freedomischaos, on 06/04/2009, -1/+27Do you have a better use for dead/aborted fetuses?

- BaphClass, on 06/03/2009, -7/+30Unless you were being sarcastic, that's a stupid thing to say. Obama had nothing to do with this, no politician does. This makes about as much sense as blaming Obama for the current state of the economy.
