Squealing and Blinking: Artificial Neural Networks as Art
scienceblogs.com — Neural networks have great potential for contributing to the arts. Phil Stearns has constructed a 45 "neuron" network of electronic parts which responds to lights and tones with a (rather cute) squealing sound. JP Thivierge used results from the cascade correlation learning algorithm to visualize random output values from a neural network. Jrandom,

I really don't consider this art, it's just computer generated. It's like complimenting someone for a random terragen render.- weiwuwei, on 02/02/2008, -0/+2That video is mesmerizing like a kaleidoscope, but asymmetrical. I think I saw some faces and Eiffel towers in the designs!
- memoid, on 02/02/2008, -1/+8of course its art, the computer is just a tool, thats like saying rodin's 'the kiss' is not art cos its hammer and chisel generated.
Remember someone wrote the algorithm to produce what you see... you don't just say 'computer, draw something nice' and it does it... - simpleid, on 02/02/2008, -0/+5it's not art because a computer generated it? i thought art was a form of expression. a man made a device which is creating the values by which a man bases an evolving visual display on is not art? i think it is.
- ferrofluid, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1The established criteria for an object to be 'art' is whever the 'artist' is a graduate of a credited art school.
You could have the greatest modern work of art and if the creator is not one of the insiders in the art world then they ignore it.
Some of the modern art stuff around today is awful, dead things in fishtanks, looped video of the artist peeing on a dead cat, soiled bed clothes etc etc. All qualified artists but not real art. - ferrofluid, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1Theres 'art' in creating fractal generators, and 'art' in selecting the better results they generate, likewise with this digital art contraption, it took hundreds of hours to build and its quaint in its fragility.
