Keira Knightley invented the conventional solid state laser while she was on the set of Pirates of the Caribbean. This new development completely overshadows her accomplishments in the field of advanced stimulated emission optics. I guess she'll just have to stick with the acting thing and hope it pans out.
- marko718, on 12/23/2008, -1/+75What did you expect? That they invented a new wavelength of light?
- Thud, on 12/23/2008, -2/+46I was hoping for some sort of shark-based laser.
- TalenGTP, on 12/23/2008, -10/+46Unless it's on a frickin shark, I'm not interested
- billbugger, on 12/23/2008, -1/+37Yeah it was.
Do they have some kind of problem with Keira Knightley? - trafficlight, on 12/23/2008, -3/+37Why the jab at Keira Knightley?
- scosol, on 12/23/2008, -1/+32Yes, which is in fact, a new type of laser.
- Necoras, on 12/23/2008, -1/+27Seriously. WTF?
- phrawgh, on 12/23/2008, -3/+27The pope has already condemned it.
- Kireblade, on 12/23/2008, -2/+25Will my cat chase it?
- WELLDOITLIVE, on 12/23/2008, -0/+23Thanks for explaining, it all makes sense now
- cashmoneybuddy, on 12/23/2008, -1/+22Am I dense? I don't get it either.
- Sillywombat, on 12/23/2008, -37/+54Misleading title.
Its not a new type of lazer, just a new way of generating the actual beam. - SharkyTech, on 12/24/2008, -0/+17"A laser is a device that emits light (electromagnetic radiation) through a process called stimulated emission. The term "laser" is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation." - Wikipedia
Sounds to me like the laser is the device, not the beam. - serif69, on 12/23/2008, -1/+17That's what she said.
- Pother, on 12/24/2008, -1/+17They made light of the topic and weren't very coherent...
- DeFex, on 12/23/2008, -2/+18I am glad they explained the size in "human hairs" or i would never have understood it.
- spritom, on 12/23/2008, -0/+15Mitch: This is coherent light.
Mitch's dad: Oh, so it talks. - centran, on 12/23/2008, -0/+13maybe this new laser will be water proof....
FTA "The new type of laser is less sensitive to temperature changes and seems to run well at lower currents"
Well there you go! It sounds like it would be easier to make a powerfull, small. submersible laser to fit on a sharks hear. - inactive, on 12/23/2008, -0/+11The lasers she invented are sub-par. Someone else explained it better above.
- TVarmy, on 12/24/2008, -0/+11My friends and I invented a new color. We were mixing up paint for giggles, then we accidentally poured some red paint in some green paint and it turned a weird brownish gray color. We're thinking about getting it patented. My hope is that they could make new TVs that use this color to make things more realistic and vibrant. I also believe it could become a car color that would increase fuel efficiency.
- Rivetgeek, on 12/24/2008, -0/+10who the hell is digging this up? Yes, its a new way to excite photons. Just like a 1000W CO2 laser is different than what you tease your cat with.
- UselessTrivia, on 12/23/2008, -1/+11Came here to say that.
Do we not like Keira Knightley anymore or something? - fleischner, on 12/23/2008, -4/+14Best comment... perhaps ever.
- KayinAngel, on 12/23/2008, -4/+13her lasers aren't performing to their optimal levels.
- bullsfan03, on 12/23/2008, -1/+9If you had time to edit the comment, you could have used delete, too
*edit* damn you bullsfan03 for your quicker draw! :p - AshamedAmerican, on 12/23/2008, -1/+9Ah good ol' tech news.
- zephc, on 12/23/2008, -0/+8If you look closely, the quote marks seem to imply it was the article writer that said that, not Kale Franz.
- Idietired, on 12/24/2008, -0/+7That ain't love, dude. Check your pants.
- tehknotte, on 12/24/2008, -0/+7i love her

- inactive, on 12/23/2008, -0/+6Remember when Digg had lot's of it, as far as the hand could browse?
- jotux, on 12/23/2008, -0/+5Octarine lasers!
- CaptOblivious, on 12/23/2008, -0/+5Sharks don't have hears (Or ears).
Nope, gotta drill em right into their skulls. - average650, on 12/23/2008, -3/+8And this isn't knew, it was known in 1994, see wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_cascade_laser
- Ysaric, on 12/23/2008, -0/+5Was wondering how far down I'd have to go to get past the Austin Powers references to a movie that's actually worth anything.
"I drank what?" - tas08, on 12/24/2008, -3/+7Kiera Knightley is really gorgeous.
- Alias1431, on 12/23/2008, -1/+5Next week on Digg:
Scientists discover new type of shark! - championchap, on 12/24/2008, -0/+4I'm so confused.
- Rivetgeek, on 12/24/2008, -0/+4it isn't "knew" ? Seriously? Spell check can't save you now.
- mattycoze, on 12/24/2008, -3/+7Kiera Knightley is a fembot.
- graemee, on 12/24/2008, -1/+5Man-bear-shark
half man, half bear & half shark. - cliffzdude, on 12/24/2008, -0/+4Land shark. Watch out.
- Sendai129, on 12/25/2008, -0/+3Congrats, now if you google "Keira Knightley + lasers" the second search hit reads
Digg - Scientists discover new type of laser
Keira Knightley invented the conventional solid state laser while she was on the set of Pirates of the Caribbean. This new development completely ...
And as we all know, if google says it's true then it must be so! - sockpuppets, on 12/24/2008, -0/+3Welcome to the home page, enjoy your trip to the bottom.
- stix213, on 12/23/2008, -1/+4Wow, a technology article with almost no details as to what was actually discovered!
- shadedecho, on 12/24/2008, -0/+3buried for the unnecessary 'dig' at Kiera Knightley
