- postal21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Actually, genetically we should mostly be built to eat much less then we do.
If you actually use self-control and eat less over a long period of time by slowly weakening your portions you will eventually eat much less and be much more satisfied. But we live in a society with large portions where you tend to gorge yourself at the dinner table. Im guilty of this also, its hard to not want to just keep eating a food you like.
But think about it, for thousands of years humans were nomadic, then in the last 3000 years they have mostly been more settled with agriculture. But those years have varied on the ammount of food available for those people. It probably hasnt been until the last 50 years where people other then the most well-off can just eat and eat. Think of your grandparents, they didnt have snacks like we do today... ask them about it, they will tell you themselves. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6swiss cheese on it's own isn't very good. but it's my favorite on sandwiches. it's a taste that can only really be appreciated with a complimentary flavor.
- h3xley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Since this is gene therapy, this wouldn't be available to anyone who's alive now, right?
- rodrigo74, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Who said this discovery has anything to do with blaming genes for obesity?
- nawitus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1RNA interference has already disabled obesity and made them live for 25% longer.. I believe this is soon coming to human trials
- ampersand2001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1oh heck. I totally thought this said 'HANGOVER' gene. move along.
- 0b501373, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That is the basic answer, but also factor in that a lot of over eat becuase because of emotional reasons. You switch off the gene, people will just find other ways to fill the void. Some alternatives may even be positive..
- Axim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1pretty dumbed down article hunger is controlled by the interplay of leptin and orexin one controls hunger and the other satiety (fullness)
- toddsherman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Oblivinated: Wrong. Look up Myostatin as one powerful example of how genes control body structure (i.e. muscle) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myostatin
- toddsherman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Sorry for another post but here is a great video I just remembered watching from Nova ScienceNow: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/sciencenow/3313/03.html
- ardnut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ah but... would it stop your stomach rumbling just before lunch?

- riots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well there's goes my faith in scientology ... I thought hunger was a superpower!
/me throws his cape and latex suit with a big H printed on the chest in the garbage - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2This is one small step for man, one giant leap towards being able to control humanity.
- tuqqer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I hear they're also close to discovering the crack cocaine gene. Which is excellent, because by altering it, ones desire for meth drops quite a bit.
- oblivinated, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Agree~
- oblivinated, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0@toddsherman
Yes. A few people may be genetically large, however, if the general population is given the impression that being obese is all in the genes, there will be no motivation for hard work and exercise. Please wake up America! - joaquin112, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1This is so stupid and even more stupid are all the fat people reading Digg who think "Hey - maybe I can continue eating since they are so close to discovering this gene thing. I will be skinny! Pass me the pizza".
Idiots. - Pushkin, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Where do I sign up for trials?
Actually just put French or Swiss cheese in front of me and I will loose my appetite - joaquin112, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0This is one small step for man, one giant leap towards seeing how retarded you and your jokes are for all humanity.
- oblivinated, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5Stop blaming obesity on genes! Obesity is on the rampage because people do not EXERCISE. People sit in front of TV or COMPUTER and don't move for hours while snacking on junk food. THAT'S what causes obesity. We need to educate and warn our young about the dangers of obesity before it is too late.
- smcavoy, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4individuals can't be to blame. its either society's fault or genetics. Do you have any idea how good junk food tastes? People can't be expected to have self-control!

What is Digg?
