It's not the car, it's the "how", which is the real question.
I believe they are using a car to show complexity and with something you can relate to, i.e workings of a car, axel, tire, rim, etc.
"I've been saying it, I've been saying it for 10 damn years."
Nanotechnology is the way of the future, start investing now. - Randoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pretty kewl.Yes it does not clear cancer but it is the wave of the future. Its not as easy as building a model.Thumbs up to these guy's.
- muldoonaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i hope you all realize this has implications of building tiny, molecule-sized machines...
this isn't just a side project someone decided to do. - innternal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does a class C license allow me to drive this?
- ChanEilFhios, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1RTFA before showing off your ignorance people. From TFA, "The group subsequently built a nanotruck that can transport molecular cargo as well as a light-driven motorized nanocar."
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2iCar Nano?
- surfing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Finally a cure to the parking problem we have here in California!
- matx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Will this be sold at my local car showroom?
- schroeder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Professor Tour avers: “It’s the beginning of learning how to manipulate things at the nanolevel in nonbiological systems.
The project was about making molecules do something you wanted them to do. Like when you first learn computer programming... you have to make something simple to learn how to make things interact to get any sort of end result.
But maybe you're all right... they should have first made a cancer-crushing super-machine before making the soap box racer... - Schmitty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's quite an advancement, considering the trouble they had to go through to put the fullerene wheels on the car. Consider that fullerene molecules are the most stable molecule yet discovered. Also consider how difficult it is to get an extremely stable molecule to react and combine with another molecule. The important advancement here is not the car, but the construction of the car. Say what you want people, this is a step forward.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah yeah, but how many miles a gallon does it get?
also is this going to be european car? Maybe it will be the next version of the smart car? - deelogix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1is this ***** or for real? if its for real.. dooope!
- Reliant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good. Now tuition can be raised to pay for the research, and we can let those crappy research ideas like curing cancer take a back burner.
The reason why technology such as this is being researched is so that we can find a cure for cancer faster. It is sad that cancer has been taking a long time to find a cure for, but we have to realize that with new technology, a cure will be found. - Bindibadgi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nascar Nano. The whole track fits on your gold wedding ring, the only problem is that you have to keep your finger under an electron microscope to watch the race.
There's no such thing as the "cure for cancer", it envolves thousands of research projects just like this to develop techniques to make materials just like this in order to synthesise future drugs. - z0rz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok this has to be the stupidest thing I've seen on digg. No offense free-mind but this has to be the most pointless technological "advancement" we've made. I mean who wasted there money building this? I won't hurt your story rating but this is not diggworthy.

I'll send an e-mail to Dr. Lamba and tell him to go back to school and learn grammar. So many english mistakes in the article I gave up halfway through. - hax0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0karras, please give some recommendations for nanotech companies and I'll gladly buy a few shares... I have been using sharebuilder, but they don't sell all of the stocks I want to buy, can you recommend a better online company to purchase stocks from?
- erniee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All I can say is reopen Adventure through Inner Space at Disneyland! Walt knew this was coming!
- sohlemac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0+digg.
I've often heard that creating nanomachines is like trying to use Lego's with boxing gloves on. It's great that we're finally becoming able to move things around on this level in some kind of coherent way. - Namco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How'd they make the wheel's roll? Is there a nano spindle with nano bearings attached to the fullerene wheels?
- scotticus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's just it karras.... the how isn't anything new. Nothing done here hasn't been done ten years ago. Just the idea of making the molecule look like a car. They didn't invent anything useful here.
- polymangler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DUGG
This is a incredible step forward. These guys are learning how to successfully manipulate nano-technology and fabricate something from it. It doesn't matter what it was. - MonkeyFit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"aww how cute.. now the HIV have a toy car they can play with while they attack your immune system"
They don't play with these. They use them to do drive by shootings on your white blood cells. - stark23x, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Good GOD some of you people are stupid.
This is a first step. Ever hear of science? Research? Jesus. What the frig is the average age on Digg, 12? - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Bored scientists build....."
Pointless, for now..
It could (and probably will) go down two paths.. One, medical, yey, tiny little robot go inside you and kill cancerous areas/tumors.. Or, the one that will get all the funding, tiny little robots go inside you, and sever the connections to your brain.. No more messy shooting of evil terrorists/people near by, yey! *mummers*
- Ben - Rann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is there any Intelligent people out there? From the posts I think if brains were money all of them are dead broke... Do a little research before you run off at the mouth. For example put a few of these nano machines togather and they could do "Drive-by's" on cancer cells or virus ect. We should have bred for brains not social acceptable wise cracks...
- Marfanity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Simple machines lead to complex machines.
- scotticus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0No digg.
It isn't a nanocar. It has no engine and can't pull itself. If anything, it's a nanocart. The nano-machine gimick is running old. Say you're doing something nano, and people throw money at you. So silly, yet nobody bothers to build any actual machines that DO anything. They just do some organic chemistry to make a nanometer sized molecule and call it a nanomachine. Call it whatever you want, but it doesn't DO anything.
The concept of making real world objects nano-size is just stupid. If you're really interested in developing nano-machines, we need to think about how one could do that and what kind of engine we could use to drive the machine, instead of just goofing around.
I have an idea... let's make a molecule that looks like a horse and attach it to the nanocart! ROFL!!!one11!!
What a colossal waste of money. - rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"No digg.

You're a moron. A nano engine cannot exist, because one molecule of fuel would be bigger than it.
It can pull it self when the gold is heated. - Kamikid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0It's like they dont really know what to do with this technology yet. Like building a tiny car? Who cares? What purpose it that going to serve? It's not like one day humans will be shrunk down enough to drive them. What I think they should be doing is creating layers of systems at the nanoscale level that will do amazing things at our level.
- muldoonaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0...medical implications
- jhaitas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I believe what they built was a nano-wagon not a nano-car. I did not read about a molecular engine in there. Sounds like they're overstating their achievement. They need to make a nano-horse to pull their nano-wagon.
