- fasda, on 10/11/2007, -15/+58I'll stop eating animals when they stop being so delicious...
- cyberpope, on 10/11/2007, -1/+32And what if these lab grown meats take up less resources than say your soy bean meats? Would you switch over?
Of course the answer would mainly be based on why you're a vegetarian (for your health or against animal slaughter). - sexycommando, on 10/11/2007, -3/+34soylent green is people!
- chudgoo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+30You have no idea how long I've been waiting for this...
Chicken and steaks without veins, gristle and fat.
I like my food to look nothing like its former self, but don't like it pre-chewed by a robot. - retral, on 10/11/2007, -4/+31Will it taste like chicken?
- shreveyboy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+27You only find it disgusting because it is new and mostly unknown to you. Most of the food we eat has been tampered and genetically enhanced since the days humans began to cultivate food. Carrots, up until the past couple of centuries, used to be purely white and bland in flavour. There used to be 32 types of known potatoes, now there are only four because those four have been grown specifically for their flavour and size. Just because something is new does not me we should be discouraged by it.

- kazukisan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16what will the vegans think??
- TheAkolyte, on 10/11/2007, -7/+18You dont need a lab to grow meat. Ive got some meat growing right now!
- x0nIMIn0x, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12To anyone who reads this and reacts by thinking, "Meat from a lab? Eww, gross."
Remember that most of our meat comes from slaughter houses which could not be more vile and rancid.
Take a tour of the killing floor, and the smell alone will make you pray for a lab-grown steak. - Erowid, on 10/11/2007, -6/+16As a vegetarian myself, I feel obligated to say: Shut the hell up. No one wants you pushing this on them.
- TheAkolyte, on 10/11/2007, -19/+29How am I supposed to get protein with "soy derivatives." ***** that, ill just eat meat and vegetables, thank you.
- onwardknave, on 10/11/2007, -5/+14re: "what will the vegans think?"
As a vegan, I'd say this is an ethical step forward which even non-vegans can appreciate, but that not all vegans choose their dietary lifestyle based on ethics. I chose to become vegetarian, and later vegan, to be healthier, and to run marathons. Animal protein intake is related to numerous increases in disease risks, including heart disease, gout, and colorectal cancer, to name a few. This new method of meat production needs to find a way to be ethical AND healthy AND cost-effective before it gains traction, and I don't see that happening any time soon, or without the aid of genetic engineering to alter the protein chemistry. If the protein chemistry were altered, it might not even taste the same, and that would put off lots of omnivores/carnivores toward accepting it. As a vegan, let me also add that I make a point not to get on anyone's case about what they eat -- but I am happy to explain my choices when asked. - alexforcefive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10@theakolyte: "How am I supposed to get protein with "soy derivatives." errr.. 'cause it's full of protein? - catalysis, on 10/11/2007, -8/+15Soybeans are what food eats.
- spindrift, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Absolutely nothing (s)he said is scientifically untrue, snarky, pushy, condescending, deprecating, righteous, unhelpful or even particularly controversial. Why is (s)he being dugg down?
- TheCasablancan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8I disagree with you to an extent.
One of the things that gives steak is great taste is Marbling, which is the small lines/globules of fat in the lean flesh. Without marbling you would definitely have much leaner, and probably healthier meat, but as you know, very lean meat requires much more tenderizing to keep it from being tough.
But then again, it's personal taste. Just how I like my steak medium rare to medium, and others like theirs well done. And like the mom from "The Oblongs" said: "I like to look my meat in the eye before I eat it." - fogbog293, on 02/10/2009, -4/+9@gamabunta
Do you have any idea how much corn it takes to create a pound of beef? Don't be an idiot! If everyone went vegetarian, the amount of farmland needed to feed the masses would decrease dramatically. - Bytor, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8Sounds great to me. I eat meat. I won't stop eating meat, but I would switch if they can make a lab grown alternative.
I don't know who would have a problem. I am sure my vegan buddy wouldn't touch it, but he should be happy that less animals are being farmed for food.
I would love to see a day when supermarket meat is all manufactured or grown and there are no animal farms. If you want real meat, it is hunted wild game. This is more natural IMO. - QUAINTMAN, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6True, but it's pretty resource heavy to raise them.
- Dotcommer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Im not a vegitarian or vegan, but if you've ever had a grilled portabello mushroom cap burger....
just sayin'.. that was surprisingly delicious. - johanm, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6see i knew wendys didnt get their patties from square shaped cows!
- supermanred, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8Steaks without veins? Dude, go to a good butcher and get yourself a good peice of ***** meat. Stop shopping at the dollorama for your steaks and I guarantee you will not encounter another vein.
- DarthPoo, on 10/11/2007, -12/+16You gave that same reply the last time this story was on the front page. Eat meat.
- monesy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7odinsfury,
that statement is completely retarded. sure, there are a lot of processed meat "products" that are awful for you, but whole muscle meat is very good for you. i pity you! get educated! - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8Check out your teeth sometime (assuming they havent all fallen out from your soymilk diet), and try and tell me with a straight face that humans are not designed to eat meat.
Your cholesterol "proof" is also total *****. Humans have eaten meat since the dawn of their existance, and doing so had a lot to do with how successful we became. Without eating meat early humans would never have been able to support the large brains they had, nuts and berries in the quanities they were able to find just wouldnt cut it.
So live in your own little world and deny the facts all you want, but no one else is buying it. - drjekelmrhyde, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5But can they grow BACON
- mal1964, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6the study is being funded by the animals of the world
- monesy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5odinsfury,
I don't know what kind of research you were doing, but it certainly wasn't scientific. Here's a quote from a first-year university biology textbook:
"Many hormones, including the sex hormones in vertebrates (eg. humans), are steroids produced from cholesterol. Thus, cholesterol has important functions in animals (eg. humans), although high concentrations of cholesterol in the blood may contribute to atherosclerosis." (Campbell, Neil A., Biology 4th ed., University of California, Benjamin Cumings Publishing Company, 1996).
Cholesterol is also required for digestion it is required for the synthesis your bodies bile salts. Moreover, it is required to maintain the structural integrity of the cellular membranes in each, and every on of your cells. These are scientific facts (i.e., beliefs held true by the vast majority (~99.9%) of the scientific community)
Eating meat is natural for humans, as we are omnivores. Eating too much red meat, or meat rich in saturated fats is not good for humans.
Your teeth are NOT going to fall out from drinking soy milk (although the thought of drinking unsweetened soy milk makes me cringe!). Drinking soy milk is natural too; it is also quite good for you.
Meat does not always have to be cooked!! GEEZ!!!
Meat in a petrie dish? YUCK
Unsweetened soy milk? YUCK
enough said. - OdinsFury, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Do you even know the first thing about how your body synthesizes protein? Amino acid strands (which are present in all plant life to some extent) make up protein. Nuts and whole grains have complete amino acid strands and make them just as much of a source of protein as flesh. If your body consumes an incomplete strand it will store it until a complete strand can be made.
- sansalvation, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Hehe, good postings people. Ok, here is my two cents. Conceptually I would rather become a vegitarian than eat meat grown in a lab but realistically if that was the only place meat could be obtained I would probably eat it :) The reason I eat meat is the same reason everyone else that eats meat does. It tastes good to us. Sure, we can argue the health benefits but you would probably be as likely to convince me to stop eating meat as it would be to convince a vegitarian to start doing so.
We could examine the global impact of deforestation to create land for cattle or look at the treatment of animals used in the mass production of meat. Yeah, I agree it is disgusting. The thing is, I still like the taste of meat and healthwise humanity has a lot more to worry about than meat in our diets. - Samas11, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5this is really interesting! im not too sure about the practical side of it...but its cool none-the-less!
- Area51mafia, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Hmm, is Dilbert's Tomeato finally going to become a reality?
(hopefully I'm not the only one who watched the Dilbert show) - sirbenofwhite, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3i, personally, will not be partaking.
- Helfax, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3It sounds similar to the "food" that they had to eat in Asimov's robot series due to food shortages and such.
A great read if you haven't read them. - confusednazgul, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3If they can make fake beef taste better than the real stuff, I'll go back to eating red meat. My reason for not eating mammals was never guilt... It's just that I don't like the flavor.

"modern agricultural machinery used to harvest and cultivate their beans and ***** kills VASTLY more animals (albeit small burrowing ones) per acre (and ulitmately per serving/calorie) than free range livestock"
I cannot wait to use that line. - fixty, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6@odin
"When was the last time you hunted and killed your meat with your teeth?"
non sequiturs make gronk giggle like cavegirl! - middleclassbuzz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4 @ gamabunta,
Go back and read my comment before you call it idiotic. I never recommended everyone become Vegan; hell, I never even said everyone should become vegetarians. I suggested animals stop being tortured, you asshat. - jake8689, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4@waxoff
but what if it taste so fanatically good you would not have anything else but - achoi, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Well, once they refine it to the level of delicious-juicy steak, that's all I need.
And if it's cholesterol and fat-free, hey I'm down for that too - fixty, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6Vegan Meat? That's pretty cool, although I KNOW my vegan friends' first reactions will be something along the lines of "it still originally came from an animal so I'd never touch it"... at which time I will point out how closely that logic resembles that of those who oppose medical embryonic stem cell research. I'm devious like that :)
ps. If you really want to confuse a vegan inform them that modern agricultural machinery used to harvest and cultivate their beans and ***** kills VASTLY more animals (albeit small burrowing ones) per acre (and ulitmately per serving/calorie) than free range livestock. It's like showing a kid there's no Santa. Only slightly funnier. - j0eb0nd7, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3There is a simple test you can perform to determine if the front teeth are designed for piercing fruit. Simply cut a hole in ones cheek, and try to eat an apple using only your molars. I have more to say, but my keyboard is getting bloodier by the second.
- tech42er, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2No one tell blueskydiver, ok?
- QUAINTMAN, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"To think we don't need meat is asinine"
Uhh, there are plenty of people who have not been eating meat for centuries (and longer) and they're by no means less healthy because of it. To think we DO need meat is asinine, since the millions of people who don't eat meat are so clearly proving you wrong everyday. - tech42er, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Do the same for a steak.
- OdinsFury, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5Please tell me how my teeth are going to fall out from drinking unsweetened soy milk. When was the last time you hunted and killed your meat with your teeth? If humans as you say have been eating meat since the dawn of mankind surely they wouldn't have needed to cook it because they wouldn't have had fire, but we all know that humans are the only meat eaters on this planet that has to cook their meat.
