- RevAradia, on 08/20/2008, -12/+86People are uneducated and think that they are going to somehow kill babies to get the stem cells or use aborted fetuses and in some way that will cause more people to get abortions. It's quite ridiculous really but people will bitch before they know all the facts.
- oveedrx, on 08/20/2008, -3/+73Why are we not funding this?
- Enfenestrate, on 08/20/2008, -11/+70Those godless bastards
- jaxter2010, on 06/17/2009, -9/+60I know its so much easier to just call people on the other side of an argument stupid, but two groups will only come to an agreement after they make an effort to see it from the other side, and not just insult each other.
- pintomp3, on 08/20/2008, -9/+45because religious fundamentalists have decided they know more about science than scientists, they have declared that a zygote is a human based on the words of a pope in the 14th century, not even something from the bible. they have decided that even though no other religion shares that definition, everyone must live by it. thank you american taliban.
- painting, on 08/20/2008, -5/+36because its genocide, as we all know from the Bible, its only okay to kill people when God commands.
- Thwackum, on 08/19/2008, -3/+29Hell yes! No more needles for me!
- apena89, on 08/20/2008, -2/+27that's what she said.
- gravis86, on 08/20/2008, -0/+22But then she saw it, and was very disappointed.
- megaton, on 08/20/2008, -2/+23Great. Now I'm gonna have to start whoring out my sperm for extra dough.
- Relikh, on 08/20/2008, -4/+22The eggs you eat are unfertilized. That analogy isn't completely copacetic. An egg is more like a woman's egg. Stem cells are obtained from a fertilized egg, meaning future baby, whereas the eggs you eat don't have a future anything.
- sockpuppets, on 08/20/2008, -3/+20How are you supposed to get your heroin then?
- Evolutuon, on 08/20/2008, -1/+16Snort it silly.

No, an embryo is no more a human than an egg is a chicken. They are two distinct things. People like you cloud the water with statements like that.
You are not uneducated becasue you disagree, you sound uneducat4ed because you disagree with well accepted science with nothing behind your assertion.
Its only dishonest to say your opponent is uneducated if your opponent isn't.
That being said, your argument has nothing to do with the fact of the matter. Using aborted fetuses for stem cells isn't unethical. Nobody is going to get pregnant and go have an abortion just to produce stem cells. That would be like getting angry if they managed to harvest stem cells from baby poop. You think babies will poop more then? - unknownpoltroon, on 08/20/2008, -12/+27Its the same people who think if you clone someone, there's gonna be a full sized copy walking around and stealing their life in a week.
IDIOTS. - ImAtHome, on 08/20/2008, -7/+21The editor made a correction.
They made O.
They haven't *actually* created O-negative yet, but it's very possible. - sockpuppets, on 08/20/2008, -0/+14I told you to stop calling me sillypants in public, it makes me feel awkward.
- oveedrx, on 08/20/2008, -0/+13actually i meant it in both ways.. one is funny .. one is serious
- gravis86, on 08/20/2008, -3/+14It was a Family Guy reference... He didn't actually want you to answer.
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -2/+13Vampires don't discriminate.
- pintomp3, on 08/20/2008, -1/+11because we only fund things that go boom.
- DreamEnder, on 08/20/2008, -0/+9Or from reverting adult cells back into stem cells.
- slopoke, on 08/20/2008, -0/+9there are people who sell blood plasma? i'm being very serious.
- publiclurker, on 08/20/2008, -0/+9Plus, one of the main proposed souces for stem cells are the left over embryos from in-vitro fertilization. It's either that or flushing them down the drain.
- DiggzDE, on 08/20/2008, -0/+9Meanwhile people who sell blood plasma for a living are pissed.
- WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -2/+11@timbellomo:
You sound uneducated because you don't seem to realize that most embryonic stem cells come from extra IVF (in vitro fertilization) which help infertile couples to conceive (I'm not actually sure that ANY stem cells come from aborted fetuses, since many families choose to bury/cremate them). These IVF embryos would never have been implanted and brought to term - even before stem cell research, IVF clinics created more than they needed just because biology is messy and it's good to have backup. So: you use the embryos to advance science, or you discard them entirely. Real moral dilemma there, yep.
(citation: http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/units/stemcells/scc ... ; scroll down to "Embryonic stem cells from IVF embryos") - sockpuppets, on 08/20/2008, -1/+10Do vampires own blood plasma TVs?
- zjbird, on 08/20/2008, -4/+13Great, now Disney is going to have to make blood to compete with it...
- gn0stik, on 08/20/2008, -1/+9Now do it with nasal stem cells so you can have donation drives. There's to much politically wrapped up in this for it to ever get the green light. Political controversy means PAC $$$$$$ for our politicians, therefore it will never ever be resolved, and it benefits our representatives to keep the controversy going. Just ignore the ***** and use nasal stem cells. ***** the polites. Of course, that's where the scientists get funding for research so, yeah, it benefits the them to keep the controversy going too. And around and around we go.
- megaton, on 08/20/2008, -0/+8FTA: "Lanza said that the technique could just as easily make O-negative, provided one started with an O-negative stem cell line -- something they did not possess"
Again, with the reading thing. - pintomp3, on 08/20/2008, -3/+11fine, no transfusions for you then.
- Hinducow28, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7©I Can't Believe It's Not Blood!
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -8/+15Great news for vampires.
- NightRiderkami, on 08/20/2008, -3/+10Smartest thing I've heard on digg in a long time.
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 08/20/2008, -0/+6Because it is used to generate GOP campaign contributions and wedge issue votes in key states from the ignorant amongst us.
Don't believe the hype/spin. It's just about money and votes in close contests. - biopmonkey, on 08/20/2008, -2/+8OMG stem cell research is sooooo bad!! OMG OMG OMG you're all going to hell!!!
Could you imagine if we lived in a world without religious bigotry?? We would be lightyears ahead of where we are now.
I was going to write something about how people who've had a loved one pass away needlessly should rethink how religion affects society.. but hey.. the ones that i want rethinking things probably already thought of that!!!! - MvP1292, on 08/20/2008, -1/+7rAmen brother

- Intrusionv2, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5Stories showing the usefulness of stem cell research makes me very happy. Utilized, technology lets us achieve "impossible" tasks much more easily.
- gravis86, on 08/20/2008, -5/+10"Stroke! Stroke! Stroke!"

It's got a good ring to it. - laughandsing, on 08/20/2008, -1/+6enantiodromia -- have you looked at where your taxes go? They rarely go to help good causes.
- carlieq25, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5Many stem cells are collected from fertility clinics where the embryos will just be thrown away as the parents have already conceived and do not plan on needing the service in the future. I don't see the harm in using that which will be discarded anyway for scientific research with the potential to help millions. The "life" argument doesn't really hold up when you consider that the "life" will be thrown into the dumpster behind the clinic.

- kwasmosis, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5For sure if you are type O-negative you will get calls from the blood donation centers. It's really kind of weird. Although I have to say they are my favorite telemarketers. Mainly because they give me orange juice and cookies.
- pintomp3, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5no thanks to you.
- Arkavus, on 08/20/2008, -2/+7Over 50% of the people in the US will need a blood transfusion in their lifetime. I think that speaks for itself.
