- birdwatcher3000, on 10/12/2007, -10/+86I feel sorry for the people who funded such research.
- dknighton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+74I was going to write a thoughtful response to this, but a chick with a huge rack just walked by.
- soogy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+70Figures. Only scientists hadn't figured this out yet.
- RexKwando, on 10/12/2007, -5/+45Didn't really need "scientific research" to figure this out!
- mc1123, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34Yeah. They have these things called breasts.
- SoccerBoy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26This rates up there with the tests that show that drinking beer makes you lower your standards... who doesn't know about beer goggles?!?
- chad78, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23I am voting you down, you lucky ungrateful jerk, because there is only one hot chick in my office, and she's only part time - and she's engaged - and she doesn't work where I can see her very much. I'd *GLADLY* live in your so-called "hell".
- fani, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24What about the males who conducted the test ? Did they lack focus conducting the test as well when they were showing sexy women or lingerie ?
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19If you spell "lose" as "loose," what do you do when you have to untighten something?
- diggerphelps, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Give teh guy a brake, he was distracted while he was tipping.
- CatfishJones, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17"There was an article on digg a while back that explained such scientific studies (ones that seemed like "givens")... let's see if I can't find it..."
http://www.digg.com/science/Science_Confirms_the_Obvious_ - DBCubix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Longer than your index (pointer) finger, not middle (flip off) finger. My ring finger is longer than my index finger. Come here duke and give me some loving!
- chad78, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17In other news, the global mortality rate remains at 100%. It seems at one point, everyone on earth will die.
Also, the earth rotated on its axis today, as entrophy continued to rise. - harr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16If you think this study is a waste then you do not understand the nature of science. If the obvious was always taken as true then no one would have got anywhere. For example it is obvious that the earth is flat. But on closer inspection the earth's shadow on the moon is always the same shape and a ship's mast always appears first on the horizon, etc. so the earth can't be flat. There are better examples for this situation, but not everyone will know the details for the ones I can think of at the moment. But trust me, many scientific advances have come from people testing things they thought were obvious and showing that they are not true and often science has progressed slower than it could have due to people blindly thinking that something is true just because "it's obvious".
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14There was an article on digg a while back that explained such scientific studies (ones that seemed like "givens")... let's see if I can't find it...
And, I can't. Can someone help me here? Basically, it mentioned that one of the biggest reasons for doing research on "obvious things" is that research on subjects that are "common knowledge" sometimes yield the most surprising results, and even if they don't, at least the common knowledge is now quantified. - bitslayer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16looser.
- feedscott, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17Does this have the same effect on gay men? ....or not so much.
- KingAdrock, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16awesome, this is my get-out-of-jail-free card /w my girlfriend
- Geeksgetmehot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11So men CAN only think with one head at a time.
- durex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Digg defintately needs a "No *****" category for news...
- Cybrwolf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Simple, you "loosen" it *grin*
- Utopian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"my stuff points roughly 15 degrees to the left at full attention, so what does that say about me?"
That you're right-handed? - spinalcracker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Sorry... what? I was checking out the chick next to me and missed this.
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Good luck with that.
- JeffreyLebowski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7He must've been distracted by a woman at the time of his original post.
- whizzbang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Who said they were male scientists?
(if they were women they might have doubly distracted the subjects) ;) - DarthTurducken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It is true what they say; "Women are from Omicron Persei 7, men are from Omicron Persei 9."
- bytefoo, on 10/12/2007, -11/+17omg titties
- schleppo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7This particular site is also distracting to me, as a man. Does that mean digg.com is female?
- duke, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10From the article - "If the ring finger is longest, it indicates a high testosterone level. "
WT?????? Has anyone ever seen ANYONE whose ring finger is longer than the middle??? I've heard of male pattern baldness associated with high testosterone, but a longer ring finger means you're a damn MUTANT, not a stud!
duke - g30ph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Ever wonder why most of the chicks who work at banks are smokin hot? I smell a conspiracy.
- fullgl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Makes us loose track of how to spell the word LOSE too.
- thewise1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7maybe if they don't want to be stared at they shouldn't dress in tight, revealing outfits that show cleavage and curves and.. err, sorry, I was getting carried away there. Maybe they should dress more modestly.
- EdLesMann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The blood gets distracted in other areas of the body and it seems to take its time getting back to the brain...
:-D - chudpi, on 10/12/2007, -9/+13> Does this have the same effect on gay men?
(speaking from experience)
Absolutely. Only difference being the object of distraction would need to be male. - master_of_fm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5the very tip of my index finger points in about 15 degrees towards my middle finger on both hands, plus my ahem... my stuff points roughly 15 degrees to the left at full attention, so what does that say about me?
- zweben, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Dr Siegfried DeWitte, one of the researchers who worked on the study, said:
"We like to think we are all rational beings, but our research suggests ... wow, she is hot." - chrishill, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8personally I think this is.... hey a girl! (wanders off)
- serra, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I still can't believe that people can't tell the difference between certain words. Lose and loose. They're and there and their. You're and your. Ugh... not in 3rd grade anymore people!
- theuber1337, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I have a professor in a college class in game design. Our class seems to lose attention a lot so he randomly throws the word 'boobies' into his lectures and continues on talking as if nothing happened. It works. He drew them on the board once too instead of Venn Diagram, that also worked.
- ThisGeek, on 10/12/2007, -9/+13Hopefully people will read this and see that it ain't our fault we get flustered around a pretty face.
- pr0t0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I thought the index finger to ring finger thing was the most interesting part of the article.
As always, google is your friend...
http://www.bath.ac.uk/pr/releases/fingerlength.htm (original research)
http://archives.cnn.com/2000/HEALTH/03/29/gay.fingers/ (as applied to sexual preference)
http://human-nature.com/nibbs/02/manning.html (more research) - itsallgeektome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah... I bet at least half the guys who read it immediately checked too. (Yep, it's longer... guess I'd better not negotiate with an attractive woman for awhile)
- themuffinman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Next up...scientific proof that getting tasered in the face hurts...
- SambekZX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wonder if this translates into Islamic countries in the Middle East having the most efficient, coolheaded male workforce in the world. The women there are covered from head to toe and raunchiness carries severe penalties.
- CosmicJustice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If this is true does it mean that women in combat cause an increase in casualties?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4That article is worthless without pics.
- pbromberg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Looks like the poster might "lose" track of his thoughts because of his "loose" fitting trousers. Or was it just because he was looking at a pretty girl?
- mrops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3From TFA:
"The researchers are conducting similar tests with women. But so far, they have failed to find a visual stimulus which will affect their behaviour."
Hmmmm... show my wife shoes, jewlery or a dirty kitchen. - curunir, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7There should be a standard reply to every article about a scientific study: "Ok, but what about [insert your favorite minority group here]."
