- benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14who do we blame when our universe collapses in on itself as a result of this experiment?
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Haven't these guys seen Event Horizon? They must be stopped!

- UmmoSirius, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Of course, in that dimension Nader would have won in 2000.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17I'm surprised your useless comment isn't laced with some sort of blog spam.

And americans would have trouble walking through the streets of Europe and the Middle East without the locals hugging them. - regyt, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15In another news, Flux Capacitor could allow time travel.

- Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I really liked Newtonian physics. They were so simple and logical! Then Einstein came along and turned a simple thing complicated. Now I have no idea what the universe is like anymore. -_-
- PvtJenkins, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8We aren't planning on opening the so called fourth dimension(yet), we are just trying to gather some information on it. To see if it even exists, or at least put us a step closer to the answer of whether it is real or not. And I realize the comments about people and things being different in the fourth dimension as jokes, but at least know that it isn't exactly like another place. The fourth dimension (if real) would merely be an extension to what is already here. That's like saying "I hope Bush can come up with better policies in the 2nd dimension". It doesn't quite make sense, since the 2nd dimension is part of this universe already and we would still see him and his stupid policies (albeit, as a stick figure on a piece of paper).
To get a better sense of what I'm babbling about, think of the fourth dimension as another axis that we simply cannot see or enter no matter how hard we try. Imagine yourself as a stick figure on a piece of paper. You are a 2d creature and know nothing about the so called "third dimension", that's all crazy talk to you. You only know of left or right, up down. If someone were to mention to you, "in the third dimension there's a IN and OUT", you would have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. Just like if someone were to say to us in the 3d world, "in the fourth dimension there's an ANA and KATA" you would have no idea what they're talking about. We only know of left, right, up, down, and in and out. Ana and Kata are the terms to explain movement in a 4th dimension
Also, if you were a 2d creature a prison would simply be a circle or box around you. You cannot escape that prison in any possible way, you can't go up, you can't go down, left or right. But, imagine a human living in 3d space reached onto that piece of paper, picked up that poor guy stuck in a 2d prison and plopped him back down outside of it. To the 2d creature he would of witnessed the most amazing experience in his entire life. One second he is sitting in a room with no way out, the next he is flung into the third dimension and then he's back in his world but on the outside of his prison.
You can take this same concept and apply it to our 3d world. You're sitting in jail with no way out, just a square room. The same occurrence can happen. A fourth dimensional being could simply stick his hand Ana into it, grab you, and pull you Kata out. Then place you back into the 3d world but outside the walls of the jail. All you would see is some spheres (the 4 dimensional arm of the being since you cannot see the 4th dimension, you can only see his 3 dimensional parts) appear out of nowhere.
I hope this babbling mess gave you a better understanding of the fourth dimension. I hope you understand it's not just another place to go hang out. - moges, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@mfratt
The article clearly says "spatial dimension" - sonnysavage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@mfratt
I agree that time is the fourth dimension, the other three could not be experienced without it. That being said, the article states: "...extra fourth spatial dimension...". Time is not a "spatial" dimension.
EDIT: moges beat me to it - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Its Black Mesa all over again!
- Lane5slacker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6How many supervillians have been banished/pwned into other dimensions? I don't want to deal with them again.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"Is it possible? Sure. Is it even remotely likley this test will work? I doubt it"
Thats like saying. im 2% sure they will suceede 5% of the time. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You simply use the dimensional portal to go back and warn us not to use the dimensional portal. Duh..
- regyt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Sure Newtonian physics is simple and powerful, but I don't think it's logical when it comes to simultaneity.
People probably felt the same way when Newton introduced gravity. - pharekyz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I dont claim to be a theoretical physisist, but i have read a lot about string theory and im an engineering student.... it seems there are a few really strange things in this article.
They are combining dark matter theory, with the floating universe theory, with a hell of a lot of other unproven theories and think they are going to get a good result.
Is it possible? Sure. Is it even remotely likley this test will work? I doubt it - gwinerreniwg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Actually, TFA is really about detecting mini-black holes in our solar system. The existance of which proves a fourth dimension. A far more alarming and accurate title would have been "NASA Develops satellite to detect mini-black holes in our solar system!". Contrary to the title, they are not developing a doomsday anomaly so much as means to detect one.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7You, for not warning us of this eventuality sooner.
- elpayo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3H.P Lovecraft scenarios of strange creatures living in a dimesion beyond our own are whirling in my brain.
- donnikhan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Who cares, we've all been training for this event for the past 15 years. Its part of the secret government program known as DOS4GW that Bush 1 has had going on since the early 90s.
- HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Which dimension did Buckaroo Banzai enter?
- ACalcutt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Duck and cover
- ejsv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3now we have the proof of the existence of "mini-black holes" ^
- SirMr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Of course, in that dimension Nader would have won in 2000"
I might be mistaken, but wouldn’t that happen in an alternate reality (ie. parallel universe). Where as in different dimensions change the laws of physics? - goffy59, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2uhhh well in science most things arnt proven. We just ffind more info supporting each theory/discovery. Open your mind.
- Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How long do you think it takes to get these satellites designed and launched? Quite a long time, so it is possible this satellite just now got the funding or is getting to the end of it's development cycle.
- Sabin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5what ever happened to six dimensional calabi-yau spaces?
- muffinking, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You know what? I am sick of this damn story. Like 5 years ago, I saw it on slashdot, and even then people were saying "I saw this like 5 years ago on here, and even then people were saying 'I saw this like 5 years ago'". It's not going to happen.
Note: Maybe just a little teensy bit of exaggeration. But this is at least 5 years old, no matter what the datestamp on the article says. - Rangoth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3So, in this fourth dimension is the $600 of the PS3 a good idea because in THIS one its an ass idea!
- benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It was a joke gwin, no need to direct acronym cursing at me. Please take yourself a little less seriously.
- ejsv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll be waiting them with my 4-dimension tool
- kurtu5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually it wouldn't be that we can't move about in this hypothetical 4th spatial dimension. It would be that we have no clue as to where we are moving about in this extra dimesion.
You know how far up, left and forward you are, but in direction INSERTNEWNAMEHER, you don't know. So I could be standing, lets say 2 feet above, left and forward in relation to a dog. But in this new direction, I don't seem to have a way to figure out how close or far I am from the dog.
This might be an extended dimension, where X feet from the dog would be a sensible answer, or a curled up dimension where X radians from the dog wouldbe a sensible answer. Or anyother geometry like a complex coordinate for distance on a mandlebrot set. - pimpsallad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3*****.. my head just imploded
- mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Who said time can not be a spatial dimention? A being capable of experiencing time as a dimention may very well experience it as we do length, width, and height.
As for the Bush joke, I agree that GW has become too liberal, but I think McCain would make a better dimention. And, yes, when Q made the reverse time space rift, it screwed everything up...lets avoid it. - goffy59, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2some might complain this money could be used for other things, the truth is, all the money goes to the rich and powerful. id rather have it go towards this then all the ***** ***** things we spend it on. (like rebuilding iraq, spying on people, killing innocent people) Anyways, you get the idea.
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you realise that this is like saying do they know what is in the 2nd dimension of space, length.
Oh no, us 1 dimensional people have learned how to examine the 2nd dimension, I sure hope there are no giant monsters 10 meters in that direction (the direction they cannot travel) - scmiles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1With string theory there is actually more like 11 dimenions.
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah you lazy theoretical physicists, get off your asses and do some genetic engineering to help the starving.
You realise this is like asking football players to help find a cure for cancer because you feel football is a waste of time - xNaquada, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Gravity Drive from Event Horizon
- sleze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I read the article and now I am cross-eyed.
- patrickweber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1mfratt: 4th spacial dimension. If I am correct, the current understanding of the fourth dimension is three dimensions in relation to time, but I could be wrong. I think that they are trying to prove that the fourth dimensions is really that of a spacial dimension and not that of time (although I guess time could be considered a spacial dimension. It depends on how you look at it).
Edit: lol, dang, I guess I should have hit that submit button sooner rather than letting it sit for an our or two.. or four. - vegasbright, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Coming in an episode of an all new 7 Days!!!!
- Mexrocker, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6shouldn't the civil war have started already?
- gfors, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i personally would have used proven theories - ouch.
