Researchers Re-Create Pre-Columbian Sounds
msnbc.msn.com — cientists were fascinated by the ghostly find: a human skeleton buried in an Aztec temple with a clay, skull-shaped whistle in each bony hand. But no one blew into the noisemakers for nearly 15 years. When someone finally did, the shrill, windy screech made the spine tingle.

Really? I think they mean "Hadn't been blown in over 500 years" going from the context of the article.- noahhoward, on 06/29/2008, -1/+1315 years since it was dug up.
- funkyloki, on 06/29/2008, -7/+2Dug up, or Dugg up?
- noahhoward, on 06/29/2008, -1/+1315 years since it was dug up.
- Temo1, on 06/29/2008, -2/+19Wow, I had my sound on pretty high when I played the audio of that whistle. My guinea pig started squealing and ran into the closet.
- BonersMilloy, on 06/29/2008, -2/+8Sounds like a good time
- Temo1, on 06/29/2008, -0/+5Just saying, it's a pretty ***** up sound.
- Conwaysb0718, on 06/29/2008, -0/+27He'll come out of the closet when he's good and ready.
- Temo1, on 06/30/2008, -0/+4*she :)
- adam07, on 06/29/2008, -0/+7My dog heard them downstairs and started freaking out.
- TracerMan, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3They weren't kidding when describing the sound as spine tingling.

- jmeeter, on 06/29/2008, -17/+3Anyone else think the title said "Pre-Columbine Sounds"?
- MasterGrief, on 06/29/2008, -3/+3I actually did, though it made no apparent sense.
- Conwaysb0718, on 06/29/2008, -1/+7no.
- mCanada, on 06/29/2008, -16/+1I don't trust cientists mainly because his nooldly appendage tells me that voloution doesn't exist.
- MasterGrief, on 06/29/2008, -1/+5Does "his nooldly appendage" also tell you to spell things improperly?
- mCanada, on 06/30/2008, -1/+1It was a poor attempt at /s

- TexasShiv, on 06/29/2008, -5/+2Omg... 15 whole years!?
- dafragsta, on 06/29/2008, -1/+18Damn! Those things are creepy cool. They make dead ringer screaming sounds. The more musical ones sound pretty unique too. I bet Trent Reznor has acquired one of these.
- Mysk, on 06/30/2008, -0/+4Agreed. I wasn't expecting anything of substance, but that was some creepy *****. Dead ringer for a woman screaming bloody mary, and a couple of the others were just as bad.
I thought that the animal whistles were impressive, too.
Something tells me that's not a culture that I would have liked to have randomly wandered into.

- username7410, on 06/29/2008, -2/+3Did the blowers face melt off immediately? Surely something that looks like that /must/ be cursed.
- alexj306, on 06/29/2008, -13/+4***** THE RIAA
- majikmixx, on 06/29/2008, -1/+39Can I make this my ringtone for when my Ex calls?
- otakugeek, on 06/29/2008, -2/+20So you want the sound before AND after you pick up?
- LaughingMan89, on 06/29/2008, -0/+10Pick up?
- Millsee, on 06/29/2008, -3/+1Majikmixx....... you just bust my gut!

- TexasShiv, on 06/29/2008, -4/+4I see what you did there. -_-
- otakugeek, on 06/29/2008, -2/+20So you want the sound before AND after you pick up?
- freakon, on 06/29/2008, -2/+26Title should be "Scientists blow into an old whistle"
- dhughes, on 06/29/2008, -1/+2 My spine will have to remain untingled, the play button is grayed out for me.

- dhughes, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1I tried that too but it didn't work but this time it did, weird. Some weird FF3, Linux bug.

(btw, do NOT play the clip if you have a cat on your lap)- stonebear, on 06/29/2008, -0/+4Mine was curled up on top the monitor. You'd think a cherry bomb had gone off.
Sounds hair raising enough, but to be fair to the Aztecs; a horny puma can make sounds just like a woman being murdered with a fork.- fuzzybeard, on 06/30/2008, -0/+4How do you know this? Why don't you have a seat over there...
- DragonDru, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Yup. Those are some cat scaring sounds.
- stonebear, on 06/29/2008, -0/+4Mine was curled up on top the monitor. You'd think a cherry bomb had gone off.
- BossKey, on 06/29/2008, -1/+8Is this the part where the demon monster is awakened by the sound that the ancient saviors of civilization hoped had been buried along with the demon's last reign over the Earth?
- fuzzybeard, on 06/30/2008, -0/+5Tonight, a Sci-Fi Channel original picture...
- verevi, on 06/29/2008, -1/+4Is it possible that it got messed up and that's not how its supposed to sound??
- gryphon50, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0it's the aztecs we're talking about. I'm sure that is exactly how it is supposed to sound.
- Jauladeoro, on 08/27/2008, -1/+2Some of those sounds are really scary. Sounds like a woman screaming and some kind of monster in a horror movie. Reminds me of the noises those messed up people made in "I am Legend". I'm going to have nightmares.
- ElTomacco, on 06/30/2008, -3/+6Colombian, not Columbian.
- Conguent, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2Whoa that was awesome. I hope John Zorn gets hold of one of those.
- bakagaigin, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2That and some of Eye's own screeching could result in many bleeding ears.
- Conguent, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Yeah it would.
I'm glad there are other diggers that know of Zorn.
- Conguent, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Yeah it would.

- baudbwoy, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1that was some scary *****
- charlietuna, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Windy screetch.. hmm

FWIW, it's Wil Wheaton's favorite episode.
